How to cut power cable? A tool for high-quality wire stripping How to quickly cut a wire to the required length

The cable cutter looks like wire cutters, but upon closer inspection, the biting part of such a tool is built a little unusually. Why is this needed? We will have to look into this and more below.

Variety of cables – large selection of tools

Having decided to renovate your house, you notice that the wiring is already very old, the cables get hot, and plugs or circuit breakers are constantly knocked out. After this, a decision is made - to replace all electrical wiring in the house or apartment. What tools will you need? These are side cutters, or, as they are also called, wire cutters, tape measures and screwdrivers of various sizes. I would like to focus on what wire cutters are.

In fact, these tools can be used not only in electrical wiring, but also in other works, for example, depending on the size and shape, they can even cut through reinforcement up to 6 mm. What do regular electrician's side cutters look like? These are two parts, each of which consists of a handle and an edge sharpened inward. They are connected in the center through a special hole using a rivet made of durable material. Their purpose - again, depending on whether they are small or large - is to cut through the cable or individual cores, as well as thin-section wire.

For example, with a conventional tool you can work with a cross-section of about 3x1.5. A larger cable may no longer be able to be processed, or it may need to be cut in pieces. At the same time, there are also cutters that can easily cut even a thick high-voltage cable. If the action of the first type of nippers can be compared with the principle of operation of scissors, then the working part of the second is somewhat reminiscent of an excavator bucket. This tool is used near the reinforcement unit, where frames and meshes are assembled by fastening the joints with tying wire rather than welding. In this case, they are very convenient for even lengths, which will be needed for tying the reinforcement.

In a word, when buying a tool, we choose what we need it for, because the design and its price depend on this. Bolt cutters can also be classified as wire cutters, also called rebar cutters or pin cutters. This useful tool is designed to cut, or, in other words, bite bar metal. The most commonly used option is that you can work with it if you need to cut metal up to 1 cm thick.

Design of wire cutters for cable processing

Now about the design of the tool handles. Conventional wire cutters can be used without insulation, as live work is not required. And an electrician’s tools must have protective handles made of non-conductive material to prevent electric shock from hitting your hands. Also among such handles there are those on which there is a limiter above the place where we will hold the hand, which prevents the hand from jumping onto the wire. Tools with this type of handle are undoubtedly very convenient, because they provide reliable protection for the work performer, protecting them from all kinds of surprises.

Moreover, when checking the tool at the enterprise by a firefighter or a commission, no problems or complaints should arise. Regarding safety precautions (regardless of whether we are working at home or using the tool at the workplace), we can say the following. Nippers without insulation, with a destroyed handle where metal is visible, are unacceptable. Alternatively, you can wrap the handles with several layers of electrical tape, but then there will be no limiters on them and the aesthetics will be lost, although working with electrical tape will be no less convenient than with wire cutters with regular handles.

Some tools have a spring that automatically pushes the handles into place. But usually such a device has small wire cutters designed for delicate work. Since the spring is not present everywhere, let’s look at how to hold the tool correctly while biting the cable. We grab one of the handles from the bottom from the inside with our little finger and middle finger, and hold it near the rivet with our thumb. Our working half will be the one taken with the index finger (outside) and middle finger (inside). In this case, the middle finger will play the role of the same spring, pushing away the handle.

Types of cable cutters - manual and hydraulic drive

What are cable cutters? This tool is also known as a cable cutter. Thanks to its design, it is possible to cut the most popular types of cable: copper, with a cross-section of 3x400 mm and below, or aluminum, with a cross-section of 200 mm and thinner. If we talk about the ways in which they are activated, there are such options. We can mention a mechanical sector cable cutter, where the work is often done by hand. They have a manual drive, which contains a ratcheting mechanism for driving the cutting sector element, which allows you to cut cables of a fairly large diameter with little effort.

An equally popular variety is the hydraulic cable cutter (manual and machine type): in them, forces are transferred to the part being cut using a hydraulic drive. Among this type we can distinguish electro-hydraulic ones, which can have a drive for controlling both hands and feet. These hydraulically powered, electrically powered cutters have been specially designed to work quickly and conveniently. Moreover, they can operate not only from electricity, but also from batteries.

In addition to cutting wires, such cutters are also used for trimming cable cores. These include the following brands: LK125(work with cross-section up to 125 mm²); LK250(the cross-section is already twice as large – up to 250 mm²); LK500(the largest size is a cross-section up to 500 mm²). Sector shears are also used when there is a need to cut a piece of cable (copper and aluminum are available) or trim wires up to 32 mm². This also includes sector cable shears, designed for cutting sections from 50 to 70 mm² in an armored cable.

Crimping for twisted pair cables - sysadmin cutters

Cable cutters or pliers can also be called tools aimed at removing semiconducting screens. They are applicable for plastic cables and are convenient to use due to the fact that they have an adjustment that is adjusted to the cutting depth and occurs very smoothly and not abruptly. Undoubtedly, any equipment will come in handy with a tool capable of removing the outer sheath and insulation from cables or wires of different cross-sections. Permissible cross-sections range from 35 mm² at 10 kV and up to 500 mm 2 at 35 kV.

System administrators are familiar with the twisted pair crimper. This is also a kind of wire cutter for cutting cables, but they also have a clever device that allows you to close a special clip on the system channel wiring arranged by color. This, of course, can be done with a screwdriver, but this method rarely gives a good result, and it takes many times more time. But with the crimping function, the pliers will do this job in one click, and the clamp will be strong, but when working manually with a screwdriver, clamping each wire separately, and there are at least 6 of them, the fastening is unlikely to be uniform and uniform.

Cutting a power cable is one of the most frequently performed operations during the reconstruction of energy networks, during the construction of new energy facilities, as well as during the construction of large industrial buildings and structures, shopping, entertainment and business centers with an extensive power supply structure. With modern approaches to organizing such work, the cable cutting process is accompanied by additional requirements, namely the need to complete large volumes of work in a short and clearly defined time frame. Even greater intensity of cable cutting is typical for production tasks such as dismantling cable routes and preparing cables for disposal. Therefore, the question is so relevant: what is the best way to cut?

When searching for an answer to this question, in most cases, maximalism prevails: tools for cutting cables must provide a solution to the problem, firstly, quickly, secondly, as safely as possible, and, thirdly, as least expensive as possible. Alas, practice shows that in life these three criteria are practically impossible to implement at the same time. But, of course, options are possible.

An economical option is cutting the cable with a grinder. Quite fast and very inexpensive. And in practice, unfortunately, this option has quite a lot of supporters. But let’s ask any safety specialist, is everything in order in his area? It’s no secret that sparks flying when cutting with an angle grinder are a common cause of fires. And this tool itself is one of the most dangerous. Many workers probably feel a cold shiver at the thought of what cutting a cable with a grinder can lead to, if a worker with the tool turned on in his hands stumbles and loses his balance, or if the disk shatters...

An even less expensive option is cutting with a hacksaw. Quite inexpensive and cheerful. You can try and work carefully, without injury. It just turns out very slowly! And it takes a lot of physical strength. Large volumes of work cannot be done this way. And you can’t get anywhere with a hacksaw, and it often happens that the work needs to be done in cramped conditions. And finally, in enclosed spaces, metal shavings from such cutting are not always harmless to electrical devices.

All that remains is to cut the cable with specialized tools, i.e. cable cutters. The range of manufacturing companies includes many tools of this type, differing in design, performance and price. Can be found for any need with any purchasing budget. But if we are talking about a case where the criteria of efficiency, reliability and ergonomics are at the forefront, then it is worth taking a closer look at the tools produced by the German company KLAUKE.

KLAUKE is known as a manufacturer of a wide range of cable lugs and crimping tools. But besides them, the company’s catalog presents quite a lot of cable cutters, both mechanical and hydraulic. We will not consider mechanical ones now, because they are less suitable for the task of cutting power cables in large volumes. But let's talk about electrohydraulic ones in more detail.

What are these tools? We can say that they are, in fact, the pinnacle of the evolution of specialized cable cutting tools. The cutting head is equipped with two knives, which are driven by a hydraulic cylinder rod. In a relatively small tool body, a hydraulic system, an oil pump and a miniature electric motor powered by a battery are assembled together. The oil pressure in the hydraulic cylinder can reach several hundred bar, and the cutting force can reach several tons, which makes it possible to cut cables with a diameter of up to 120 mm! And in order to activate this power, just press the control button. You can make dozens or even hundreds of cable cuts a day, since physical effort is spent only on holding the tool in your hands.

Among the world's tool manufacturers, very few companies are capable of producing tools of this class. And KLAUKE, as a developer and manufacturer, occupies a leading position among them both in the number of models and in their reliability and functionality.

KLAUKE electro-hydraulic cable cutters have a number of design and performance characteristics that set them apart from others. The metal of the knives is made the way they can do it in Germany, famous for its metalworking traditions. Chemical composition, geometry, volumetric strength, sharpening and hardening of cutting edges - everything is calculated and optimized to ensure that the tool works efficiently and lasts a long time.

These knives, by the way, can always be ordered separately - in advance or as they wear out. The heads in these cable cutters can rotate around their axis, making it possible to conveniently position the tool relative to the cutting site. And they can be either closed or open. Each of them has its own advantages. The former, with the same drive power, have relatively higher cutting capabilities, since the force on the hydraulic cylinder rod is directly applied in the direction of movement of the movable knife. In open-type heads, the force on the cutting edges is somewhat lower, but this design allows you to perform “serial” cutting faster, since there is no need to constantly open and close them, as in closed heads. The consumer himself chooses what is more important to him in his particular case: higher cutting parameters or speed.

Another plus of KLAUKE electrohydraulics is good balancing of the tools relative to the center of gravity and comfortable two-component handles with soft inserts. All this allows you to hold the tools securely in your hand, and combined with their compactness and low weight, it makes it possible to work for a long time without the accumulation of fatigue.

By pressing the “start” button, we set the knives in motion. The cutting cycle lasts on average 10-20 seconds depending on the design and cross-section of the cable. After cutting is completed, the convergence of the knives stops and they automatically return to their original position. But at any moment of cutting, the convergence of the knives can be instantly stopped by simply releasing the “start” button, and after that, either continue cutting again, or force them apart by pressing another button - “return”. The ability to instantly stop the knives is the most important component of the safety system when working with KLAUKE cable cutters.

Safe work is also facilitated by the fact that the worker can clearly see what is happening in the cutting zone even in low light conditions, since this zone is illuminated by a powerful white LED on the housing. Another LED, but red, informs you about the need to charge the battery and even that the tool has already reached the required number of operating cycles and needs to be serviced.

Charging MAKITA 18 V Li-Ion batteries, which are equipped with KLAUKE tools, is enough for several tens or even hundreds of cuts, depending on the type and cross-section of the cable. Li-Ion batteries tend to lose charge very slowly, so the tool is always ready for use. To charge such a battery it takes only 15-20 minutes. If production conditions allow the use of 220 V, then in place of the battery you can install an adapter for power from the mains. This ensures versatility: you can work with the battery “outdoors,” that is, where there is no power supply, or you can work indoors with power supply without thinking about recharging the batteries.

Let's take a closer look at several KLAUKE electro-hydraulic cable cutters that are of the greatest interest for our task.

NameHead typeCutting force kN (tons)Cutting parameters max. F in mmWeight with battery kgPeculiarities
ESG25L Closed 50 (approx. 5) 25 2,1 Exceptionally light weight and size. Cuts almost any cable that fits in his head. This can be copper and aluminum cable, including armored with steel tape, aluminum-steel conductors, and even some solid products made of copper, aluminum or steel, for example, steel rod with a diameter of up to 10–12 mm
ES32 Open 15 (approx. 1.5) 32 1,8 The cutting heads of these two models have the same design. They are designed for cutting copper and aluminum cables with stranded conductors of 2–4 flexibility classes. The difference between the tools is the different drive. The ES32 has a KLAUKE-Mini series drive, which uses 9.6 V Ni-MH batteries. The ES32L with a Mini+ drive is equipped with a Li-Ion battery, cuts faster and can be powered by a 220 V adapter
ES32L Open 15 (approx. 1.5) 32 2,0
ESG55L Closed 120 (approx. 12) 55 8,0 This tool is unique in its own way - its cutting force of 12 tons allows you to cut almost any cables with a diameter of up to 55 mm, including those armored with steel tape and reinforced with steel, for example, VBBShV 4x240 mm 2
ES105L Open 74 (note 7) 105 9,4 Designed for cutting copper and aluminum cables, including those armored with steel tape with a diameter of up to 105 mm, for example NYY cable 4 x 240 mm 2

KLAUKE offers more than 15 models of electro-hydraulic cutters, which allows you to choose the tool that is most suitable in size, cutting parameters and price. But if necessary, for example, in the case of a complete lack of electricity, you can choose manual hydraulic cable cutters. Or cut the cable with hydraulic cut-off heads driven by hydraulic foot pumps.

Description NEGA-45 Ш:
Electro-hydraulic battery shears NEGA-45 are designed for cutting armored aluminum and copper cables with a diameter of up to 45 mm
The advantage of the tool is high efficiency, easy operation, automatic reverse
The tool is powered by a Li-Ion battery, driven by a motor and controlled by a microcontroller
With a high-pressure hydraulic system, the tool is ideal for work on construction sites
Peculiarities:
Control unit - automatically detects the pressure level during operation and provides protection, turns off the engine and automatically resets the settings after completion of work
Automatic pressure release - piston retracts to its original position when maximum output is reached
Manual pressure release - retracts the piston to its original position in case of incorrect operation
The tool is equipped with a double piston pump, which ensures fast approach of the die to the connector and smooth crimping
The cutting head rotates 360° for easy access in difficult to reach areas
When any error occurs, a signal appears and the red indicator flashes
The entire tool is controlled by a trigger, which makes working with the tool more convenient than when working with two control buttons
The Li-ion battery has no memory effect and has low self-discharge. Even after a long period of storage it is ready for use. In addition, it has a shorter charging cycle compared to Ni-MH batteries
Thanks to the temperature sensor, the tool will automatically stop working if the temperature exceeds 60°C under long-term operating conditions. An audible alarm indicates that the tool cannot continue to operate until the temperature drops to normal.

A good electrician has a wide variety of tools in his arsenal. After all, high-quality wiring installation often depends not only on knowledge and skills, but also on the availability of certain devices, as well as skills in how to handle them.

Even such a seemingly simple question as how to strip a wire of insulation requires a certain set of tools. An experienced electrician will have a tool for high-quality stripping of wires of any type and cross-section.

The importance of proper stripping

For a high-quality and reliable electrical connection, it is important not only to perform twisting or soldering correctly. It is equally important to carefully remove the insulation from the core. If you are in a hurry or use the tool incorrectly, you can easily damage (cut) the conductor itself. This leads to a reduction in the cross-section of the wire and faster failure of the connection: breakage or burning.
As a rule, wires and cables used in everyday life have a single-core or multi-core structure. Depending on this, various tools and methods can be used to remove the insulation from the core. Let's consider the most commonly used of them, which are used by home and professional electricians to remove insulation.

Professional tool

Professional electricians use a special device called a stripper (KSI). Such a tool can be of three types:

  1. Manual;
  2. Semi-automatic;
  3. Auto.

Let's look at their device in more detail.

The manual device is perhaps the most common version of the stripper. Several positive factors play a role here:

  • Light weight;
  • Compact size;
  • Several additional features make this tool more versatile.

This stripper has several (usually up to seven) fixed gaps, which allow you to quickly strip wires with a cross-section from 0.25 to 2.5 mm. Among the additional features, the most useful are the cable cutters and the lug crimping function.

One of the types of manual stripper allows you to remove insulation from wires with a cross-section from 0.6 mm to 2.6 mm

Semi-automatic CSI

This tool also has a certain number of holes into which the wire must be inserted to strip the insulation from it. After this, just squeeze the handles: the jaws will close and hold the wire, and the knife will cut the insulation. As a result, the stripper will open, removing the insulation.

The advantage of such a tool is its simplicity of design and ease of use. The disadvantages include some cumbersomeness and impracticality: no additional functions are provided. That is why such a device is not widely used even among professionals.

KSI-automatic

Automatic strippers are deservedly popular among electricians who have to make a large number of different connections every day. This tool is extremely easy to use: just insert the wire into the work area and squeeze the handles. The device will carefully remove the braid from the wire, automatically determining the cross-section of the wire.

Without adjustment, such a tool works with wire with a cross-section from 0.2 to 6 mm 2. It is worth noting that modern strippers have an adjusting screw that allows you to configure the device to work with wire of a smaller diameter.

In addition, the popular stripper model WS-04 has many additional functions:

  • Combs on the inside of the handles allow crimping of cores in round terminals;
  • Cable knives are installed next to the combs, allowing you to quickly cut the ends of the wire;
  • If necessary, you can set the limiter for removing insulation, for example, 2 cm.

Multifunctional automatic stripper designed for stripping both single and double insulation. But it is worth noting that one layer of braid is removed in one operation. That is, to remove double insulation, it is necessary to perform two manipulations.

Available means

But not everyone needs to strip dozens of wires every day. In addition, a high-quality professional tool costs decent money. Therefore, in everyday life, when it is necessary to clean several ends, it is quite possible to make do with improvised means and tools that any owner has.

Stripping with a knife

The most popular tool for one-time cleaning of insulation is a regular knife. But its use is fraught with damage to the cable core. Therefore, you need to hold the knife not straight, but at an acute angle to the wire and “shape off” the insulating layer. When using a knife, you need to be careful as it can easily cut you. A stationery knife is also often used, but it is even more inconvenient to work with, and it breaks easily if the braid is very hard.

A hook-shaped knife is often used to cut cables. This knife has a wider blade and is designed to cut insulation along the cable.

The knife is also available in the form of a special clamp. The wire is inserted under the clamping bar where the blade is installed. Pressing the bar with your thumb, the knife is drawn along the braid, cutting it, after which the insulation is easily removed. Such a knife costs about 200 rubles and is a fairly universal tool.

This type of knife is often used to strip insulation from UTP cables. This device also has a device for clamping a UTP cable into sockets and cross-panels

It is very convenient to use wire cutters, which are also called side cutters. In order to quickly strip the wire of insulation, the wire cutters must be held correctly in your hand. It is better to take the wire cutters with the reverse side: so that the cutting edges are directed against the direction. This will allow the blades to easily cut into the braid without damaging the integrity of the core. This method is easy to implement, and every owner has wire cutters. Therefore, this method of stripping wires has found wide application.

Side cutters are an essential tool for any electrician.

Reflow method

The insulation reflow method is most suitable for cleaning old wiring. The fact is that over time the winding loses its elasticity, becomes rigid and at the same time fragile. If you use a mechanical tool, such as wire cutters or a stripper, the braid can crack anywhere.

In this case, you can use a soldering iron or a wood burning device. Using a heated soldering iron, the braid is melted in a circle, after which it is easily removed with wire cutters or pliers.

The advantages of this method include the ability to strip insulation from very thin wires without the risk of damaging them. Of the minuses, we note the presence of acrid smoke during melting and, of course, electricity is required.

It is highly not recommended to use teeth to remove insulation. This not only damages tooth enamel, but can also cause injury from static electricity accumulated during the wiring process. It is not lethal, but very unpleasant.

How to strip some types of wire

Sometimes there is a need to connect not an ordinary soft-braided wire, but a conductive core with a specific coating. Removing such isolation requires innovative approaches. Let's look at some options.

Enameled wire

To strip such insulation, two methods are used:

  1. Mechanical method. For this method it is best to use fine sandpaper. A piece of paper is folded in half, then the wire is inserted inside the sheet. Lightly squeezing the sandpaper with your fingers, pull the wire past the free end. Such manipulations should be continued until the enamel is completely erased. This method is suitable for enameled wire with a cross-section of more than 0.2 mm 2;
  2. The thermochemical method is often used by radio amateurs to clean enamel from wires with a cross-section of less than 0.2 mm 2. Its essence lies in the use of a soldering iron and vinyl chloride material (ordinary insulating tape with such a coating will do). A piece of tape is placed on a flat surface, and a piece of wire is laid on top. Use a heated soldering iron to slowly move it along the wire. The chlorine released in this process perfectly removes the enamel coating from the wire.

PTFE coated wire

Fluoroplastic is a polymer material used for the protective coating of wires and is produced in the form of a narrow tape that is tightly wound around the conductor. This insulation has high heat resistance (up to 300° C), does not allow moisture to pass through and is suitable for use in various difficult operating conditions.

This braid can only be removed mechanically. To do this, on one side along the wire, the insulation is carefully scraped off with a knife so as not to damage the core. Once the wire is exposed, the insulation is pulled aside and cut to the desired length.

I wonder if the “fashion” for cutting wires and cables has already passed? Still, the welfare of the homeless has probably increased slightly. Although I remember there were times when simply enterprising people did this.

The photo shows a cross-section of a submarine cable. More precisely, it is a power cable used for underwater transmission of 3-phase electricity from an offshore wind turbine in England. The three bold wires are power lines, and the small one is for data transmission. By the way, the crap in two rows along the edge is a metal cord to increase the insulation strength (like a car cord). If the cable is underwater, then they lower it from the ship, and if the depth is 2-3 km, then imagine the load on the cable.

Right here in English exactly where it was cut from.

For reference, here is the cross-section of the ground wire that distributes electricity at 110 kV (high-voltage cable line 110,000 Volts).

By the way, the white insulating part is cross-linked polyethylene. It can withstand a higher electric field strength without breakdown than conventional polyethylene insulation and has a very small dielectric loss tangent. The technology for its production is very complex and the equipment for its production, as they say, costs a lot of money.
