Borisov resident Zhenya Katava has been living in New York for 6 years. She set out to conquer world podiums at the age of 16. -Zhenya, what can you say about the modeling business in Belarus?

- There are a lot of beautiful girls and talented designers in Belarus. Unfortunately, girls often think like this: I took a photo for a roadside cafe - and now I’m a model, I did a photo shoot with a novice photographer - and now I’m a fashion girl. By the way, I don’t understand the meaning of “fashion model”; for me there is no such concept. In my opinion, this is self-deception, like I’m not tall enough, but my face is beautiful, which means I’m a Model. As a person who works in this business, I don’t understand and it’s all strange. I am for soberly assessing your situation and facing the truth. They once told me: “You can consider yourself a full-fledged high fashion model when you see yourself on fashion TV!” There is something in these words. I would like to note that in America they really value your “personality” - that is, how you know how to present yourself, whether you are an interesting person, whether you know how to interest people.

- Do we train models at such a level that they can become successful on world catwalks?

- Yes, they are preparing. Somehow I was able to. I graduated from Sergei Nagorny’s modeling school, then they took me to their agency. That's how it all started. But a lot depends on you: it is important to have your own “I” and there is no need to be afraid. I had just finished school, I was 16, and I flew so far away. True, I was not flying alone, but with a friend, her name is Rita Violentiy. By the way, she is from Novosad, also not far from Borisov. In America, I was not at all shy, I quickly picked up English and absorbed, like a sponge, what my agents said.

The competition for models in America is enormous. How do you manage to participate in fashion shows of Dolce and Gabbana and Armani?

- Yes, the competition is fierce now. Not even the same as it was three or even two years ago. But somehow we stay afloat. :) Honestly, I don't know what helps me. I’m just who I am - I’m not trying to get out of myself in order to shine somewhere.

- How do you spend your free time?

- I like to sit at home and cook something tasty. Let's go with Arthur (Arthur Kulkov- Zhenya’s young man. Ranked among the highest paid male models according to Forbes magazine. - Ed.) to the cinema or sometimes we make ourselves “dates” - we go for dinner to some interesting place. I meet with friends, although I don’t have many of them here.

- Is it true that New York is now your first home?

- Well, I guess you can say that, because my man is here, all my things.

- Tell me, how, in your opinion, is the difference between the American way of life and the Belarusian one?

- Americans are different. Our people are closer to me; over the years, I still haven’t been able to get close to the Americans so much that I feel 100% comfortable. But I can’t say anything bad about them either. They're just different. It’s a different culture, it’s not spiritual for me. But in financial terms and lifestyle here, of course, everything is done for the people.

- Will you share the secret of how you keep your figure?

- Pah-pah-pah, I was lucky - my genetics are good, I’ve always been thin and long. I eat what I like, I don’t deny myself sweets. I just try not to eat chips and burgers. I really love fried potatoes and pasta, and, of course, homemade borscht.

- What can models do and what can’t they?

- It all depends on the model and the agency. For example, I can’t go and dye or cut my hair just because I wanted to. There must be a natural manicure/pedicure, no done nails or eyelashes. Keep yourself in shape, watch how you dress, always be stylish and neat. Take care of your skin.

- What is your largest contract?

- My biggest work at the moment is a contract with a design house Mugler. I became the face of their new perfume called Aura Mugler. Now it is gradually being released all over the world, I cannot disclose the details of the contract. But I'm proud of it - this is another small victory in my career.

There are a large number of brands that I work with in Italy, France, and America. I shoot for advertising and magazines, catalogues, and participate in shows. Two Russian magazines published my stories: in Elle- we filmed a big story in Courchevel for the brand Fendi, and in Glamor- beauty shoot with New Year's makeup options.

- Do you ever visit Borisov?

- If possible, I always try to come home and see my loved ones and best friends. It makes me want to go home, of course, but not for long. I’m used to a fast pace and changing locations, so in principle I can’t sit in one place for a long time. My mother visits me here, she will come again soon, I hope, for a couple of weeks. Of course, she likes it here, but she has no plans to move here because she loves her job and our city. She is the director of the Borisov Medical College.

- Do you have a favorite place in Borisov?

- Mmm, I can’t single out anything separately. We like to sit with friends in an Irish Pub. In my opinion, this is the most adequate place in our city. And in the summer there are gatherings at my house, barbecues, so there’s no need for any places. Fresh air, a fire - the best place to relax!

- You have been to many of the most beautiful cities in the world. Which one do you prefer?

- For me, there are top 3 cities in which I feel like a “fish out of water.” Barcelona is a city where no one is in a hurry, there are very pleasant and smiling people around, beautiful architecture, and everyone is relaxed. Moscow has a lot of interesting places, there is always someone to meet and something to do. Well, the people, of course, are the “Russian soul”. Everything I like. New York is the place where I have been living for 6 years, my main location, everyday life (in a good way).

- How do you see your future? Have a dream?

I don’t like to think and plan, since everything always changes quickly, but at least I see myself as a good person. But I don’t make big plans. While I'm doing what I love, I'm working.

And the dream... I’m probably growing up and starting to turn dreams into goals and go towards them. But sometimes I also like to dream before going to bed, how could I live without it. But I won’t talk about what. :)

- Zhenya, what advice do you have for aspiring models?

- I can advise young models this: believe in themselves and not follow anyone’s lead. Every person should have their own opinion on everything. Look at things and at yourself adequately and honestly. To love yourself and under no circumstances imitate anyone - you need to be an individual.

- Who would you like to say “thank you” to?

- I would like to say thank you to my first fashion show teacher Nadezhda Alexandrovna Ovsyanitskaya (Head of the fashion show studio “Modnitsa” at the M. Gorky Palace of Culture in Borisov. - Ed.), who gave me this idea - to become a model, allowed me to believe in myself, taught me the first steps and how to behave in public.

Belarus is the center of Europe and the Slavic world. Because of this, Belarusian women are distinguished by particularly pure beauty, embodying the best qualities of Slavic and European appearance.

Zhenya was born in 1994 in Borisov. My childhood dream of becoming a model has come true. At the age of 15, the girl began studying in the modeling studio of Sergei Nagorny, where she spent her formation and first works for her portfolio, which was appreciated by the American modeling agency Al Model Management. She took a stage name for herself – Zhenya Katava.

The girl’s parents brought her to the Nagorny modeling salon at the age of 14 along with her younger sister. Everyone predicted a career for the younger one, since she was much more suitable in terms of parameters, but Sabina pulled herself together and lost 19 kg. Born in 1997, she didn’t consider modeling seriously until she was 15, considered herself not very beautiful, and spent a lot of time with boys and her father. Many Belarusian photographers examined her model parameters, and invitations to shoot came constantly; she did not agree for a long time, but still broke under the pressure.

Her photo ended up in a modeling salon, and from then on her career began to develop rapidly. Alexandre de Paris, Armani, Blumarine, Chanel, Elizabetta Franchi and other designers invite Daria to participate in their shows, and between her work on the catwalk she managed to finish school and go to university for distance learning.

Natasha was born in 1995, before graduating from school and did not think about being a model at all: I was studying, drawing, helping my mom and dad with my younger brother, but in an instant a photographer saw her on the subway and offered to shoot her - so her photos ended up in a modeling agency. Before the shows she had to lose 12 kg, and after that she had a triumphant show Prada. The girl works for Elie Saab, Calvin Klein, Christian Dior, Alexander McQueen, Givenchy and other fashion designers.

Zhenya Katova is from Belarus. She spent her childhood in the small town of Borisov near Minsk. Here the girl grew up, studied and became prettier. At the age of 15, Zhenya knew for sure that she would become a model and followed her dream to the Minsk modeling studio of Sergei Nagorny, one of the strongest agencies in the country. Under the guidance of talented teachers, Evgenia revealed herself as a promising model, and, despite her modest portfolio, she was soon picked up by the Al Model Management agency from New York and put on its shows. In 2011, Evgenia opened 17 shows in New York, Milan, Paris, and in 2012 she took part in the pre-autumn show of the famous American fashion designer Oscar de la Renta. In 2013, the number of shows increased to 21, and in 2014 she was invited by Dolce & Gabbana to Milan Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2015.

Olga Popova, a modeling agent who drew attention to the girl, approached her immediately after the show and recommended that she monitor her appearance and weight, but there were no promises of cooperation at that time. The results of the fashion show and the proposal arrived in December, and already in May the girl was invited to take Polaroids, pictures without makeup for presentation to future clients.

The first trip to the show was to Poland, the girl was then in 11th grade. After this, Zhenya Katava participated in the Belarusian Fashion Week.

Then Olga Popova showed the model to an American agent from Almodels, after which her ward received professional offers to work in Moscow and Madrid. During this filming, Evgenia's first portfolio was compiled.
