Elecampane rhizome instructions for use. Elecampane tablets: instructions for use and pharmacological properties. Analogues, price, release form

The Elecampane plant, widely used in medicine, belongs to the perennial plants of the Asteraceae family and can only rarely be annual. Today there are more than 100 species of this plant, which is found in Europe, Asia, Africa, Central and North America. In the CIS it is found in Central Asia, the Caucasus, Crimea, Western Siberia, the Urals, and central Russia.

Release form

The pharmaceutical industry produces elecampane in tablets. Elecampane root is often used in its pure form, usually a three-year-old plant.

Properties of elecampane

Among all species of this plant, the tall elecampane or Altai stands out especially for its unique properties. Altai elecampane blooms, as a rule, from July to September.

In its size, elecampane can reach a height of two meters, which is the maximum. The plant is herbaceous and has the appearance of a bush, the leaves are elongated, pointed at the ends, and the stem is quite dense and straight. Elecampane flowers are striking and quite large; the color of the flowers from orange to yellow is so bright that you will immediately recognize the plant and it is simply impossible to confuse it with another.

Elecampane usually grows near a pond, in a meadow, or in some kind of quarry or ditch.

It reproduces by seeds and shoots, tolerates drought well, is not susceptible to radiation and is characterized by excellent frost resistance.

Tall plants with a wide straight stem are most suitable for use - their roots are best suited, as well as grass more than three years old, since young grass does not have the same amount of useful components as compared to a more mature plant.

The root and leaves of elecampane are used for medicinal purposes.

For further use, elecampane should be very carefully dug out of the ground, shaken lightly, the rhizome and stem removed, and the root itself washed in water. If the root is quite dense and wide, it must be cut, then laid out in a layer on a paper surface and allowed to dry, usually for two or three days in the sun. It is better not to use an oven to dry the roots, otherwise the entire healing effect will be lost. Dried rhizome has a specific pleasant aroma and taste, therefore it is widely used in the food industry and cooking as a savory spice.

Chemical composition

The beneficial properties of elecampane are present in the substances found in its root and rhizome. These include wax, resins, organic acids, gum, saponins, vitamin E, essential oils in the form of crystals from 1% to 3% with allantolic acid and allanthol, inulin polysaccharide up to 44%, mucus, alkaloids, benzoic and acetic acid. It is thanks to their presence that the plant is endowed with high antiseptic properties.

pharmachologic effect

Elecampane Altai is characterized by a pronounced choleretic, tonic, expectorant, antimicrobial, analgesic, wound-healing, diuretic, and blood purifying effect. Preparations based on elecampane slow down intestinal motility and normalize its functioning, regulate digestive processes and metabolism, and reduce secretory activity.

The use of elecampane for medicinal purposes significantly accelerates the healing process of wounds and ulcers, accelerates the maturation of abscesses, and significantly increases appetite, which is extremely important for weakened patients with underweight. Mucous substances, inulin, essential oil, and chemical elements show activity against pathogens of fungal diseases of the skin.

Tocopherol (vitamin E) is a natural antioxidant and delays the aging process.

Gum, resins, mucus envelop the walls and protect the mucous membrane of the stomach, intestines, and pharynx from adverse effects.

Indications for use

Altai elecampane is used to prevent colds, as an anti-inflammatory and antiseptic, and also as an expectorant, diuretic, and diaphoretic.

Elecampane increases appetite, improves digestion processes, improves secretion in the stomach and intestines, improves metabolism and gets rid of worms.

Elecampane herb is widely known as a good bile-forming, choleretic, and sedative. The use of elecampane eliminates problems with conception; there are documented cases.

Elecampane is used for diseases of the gallbladder and liver, bronchitis and other possible diseases of the respiratory tract accompanied by cough. The plant is actively used for hemorrhoids, painful menstruation, and gastritis.

Elecampane is widely used in folk medicine

The root decoction helps calm coughs due to tuberculosis. The herb is effective for improving the secretory function of the intestines and stomach, as an expectorant and diaphoretic.

Infusions and decoctions of elecampane root are indicated for the treatment of mild diabetes mellitus, radiculitis, diathesis, rheumatism, dropsy, jaundice, hypertension, and bronchial asthma. Elecampane successfully treats ulcers and gastritis, which are complex diseases.

Elecampane is also used as an external remedy; a decoction is used to get rid of scabies. It is recommended to use an infusion of elecampane for whooping cough and bronchial asthma, adding an equal amount of honey.

Crushed elecampane roots are used externally in the form of poultices for joint diseases, as an effective painkiller.

An ointment based on elecampane and grass leaves are used externally, and a compress from an infusion of roots is used to heal purulent wounds, trophic ulcers, for neurodermatitis, eczema, and furunculosis.

A decoction of the plant, obtained from the roots and rhizomes, is prescribed for inflammatory processes of the intestines or stomach, as a tonic for bronchitis with thick discharge and coughs, for diseases of the kidneys and liver, relieves inflammation, and is endowed with diuretic and anthelmintic properties.

For diseases of the skin, a decoction of elecampane is simply irreplaceable. When taking baths, a strong decoction of elecampane is often used as a therapeutic and prophylactic agent.

Dosage and method of administration

Elecampane tablets are indicated for adults three times a day, 2-3 pcs. while eating.

The therapeutic course is usually one month.

Side effects

When using elecampane, the following side effects are possible:

  • stomach pain;
  • vomit;
  • allergy.

Harvesting roots

For the procurement of raw materials from elecampane, environmentally friendly places are usually chosen, usually in autumn or spring (late August or September). Usually these are deciduous and pine forests, thickets of bushes, meadows, banks of streams, rivers and lakes, fields. It is strictly prohibited to collect stems, flowers, leaves, and roots of plants near processing and manufacturing enterprises, busy roads, railroad tracks, landfills, livestock farms, burial grounds, cemeteries, and animal grazing areas.

Plants for harvesting are usually in the second year of life or more, during the period of the most complete ripening of the fruits. Plant materials are thoroughly cleaned of adhering soil, washed under running cold water, and then freed from thin roots and aerial parts. Be sure to remove soft, dead, blackened and pest-eaten roots from the total mass.

To dry, elecampane grass is cut into small pieces and scattered in a thin layer in the shade. The drying location varies - attic, balcony, shed or well-ventilated veranda. The dryer can be used at temperatures up to 50 °C. The degree of dryness of the grass is determined in the following way: the leaves and flowers are easily ground between the fingers into powder, and the stems and roots, when deformed, break with a crunch and have either a pale yellow or gray-brown color at the break.

To store elecampane, fabric bags are used, glass containers or paper bags are used. Keep in dry, dark, protected from the sun rooms.

Dried stems, leaves, and flower baskets of the plant can retain their healing properties for two years, and roots for three years.
