Evangelina! – a tall, stooped woman, apparently a grandmother, shouted, turning her head. - Come, sit here!

I shuddered and looked hauntedly around the subway car. I wanted to shake my head so that water would flow out of my ears, but it wasn’t there. “Maybe Eva-Angelina?” I reassured myself. When I myself was the age of this “Evangelina” in a purple ski suit, the girls around me responded to Lena, Masha, or - in the most extreme case - Nonna().

There will be no more Ivanovich Dolphins and Sofia-Solnyshek Nikolaevnas in the capital: the State Duma nevertheless approved a bill banning calling children non-standard and ridiculous names. That's not all: by the second reading, the document will still be finalized, and the list of incorrect names will be expanded ().

Statistics of names in Russia: fashion for names, popularity of names

Should you choose a unique name for your child? Or maybe you need to give your baby a widespread, mass-produced name so that he doesn’t stand out? - This issue must be decided by the parents themselves. But we considered it our task to provide parents with information about the frequency of modern male and female names.

You will find the popularity rating of newborn names (according to statistics from 2010-2017) here:girls names, boys names.

And this page provides data on Russian names that are most common among young people aged 17 to 20 years. Interesting? Then read on.

A good idea of what names modern young people have can be obtained, for example, from an analysis of data on applicants in 2015 - candidates for admission to the country's two main universities - Moscow (MSU) and St. Petersburg (SPbSU).

Lists of applicants for bachelor's and master's degrees were analyzed and processed, that is, the names of boys and girls born in 1995 - 1998 were considered; these lists were posted on official websitesdata from the admissions committees of both universities in the summer of 2015. Why was this particular age range (17 - 20 years) chosen for analysis? - Well, in particular, for such a simple reason that these young people themselves will become parents in the coming years.

Analysis of the combination of three elements: personal name, patronymic and last name made it possible to identify with high probability those applicants which are named in accordance with Russian tradition(this includes not only Russian applicants, but also Belarusians, Ukrainians, Jews, in some cases Yakuts, Ossetians, Tatars), in contrast to persons with names not found in Russian families ( Armenian, Georgian, Kalmyk, Tuvan, Buryat names, names of Muslims of the Volga region, North Caucasus and Central Asia, etc.).

As a result, about 21 thousand female and 25 thousand male “Russian” names remained in the total sample (in the full list of applicants). This amount of data is quite sufficient to make certain statistical conclusions. The results are presented in tabular form:

100 most common female names

among applicants from Moscow State University and St. Petersburg State University admitted in 2015

In total, in 2015, both universities received a total of approximately 21,000 applications from female applicants wearing« Russians » names. In the table below, their names are arranged in alphabetical order. Along with the main forms of names, their variants are indicated:

Male names, most common among applicants to Moscow State University and St. Petersburg State University,

received in 2015, .

Experts: Anfisa Kalistratova - child and adolescent psychologist; Galina Kartashova - head. Department of the Civil Registry Office of the Vladimir City Administration; Alexandra Pavlova - psychologist at the private kindergarten “My Komarik”; David Gorelishvili is a member of the All-Russian Association of Parent Committees and Communities.

What names for girls are considered lucky?

People have long attached great importance to names: it is not for nothing that young parents are first of all interested in what they named their newborn. There is a belief that there are lucky and unlucky names, and many mothers and fathers try to choose a more “lucky” name for their child. What happens in practice?

What names for boys are considered lucky?

We have already said that there is a persistent belief about “lucky” and “unlucky” names. Today we will talk about male names that are believed to bring good luck and fortune to their owners.

Russian parents want to ban giving their children strange names

If the amendments to the law “On Civil Status Acts” prepared in the State Duma are adopted, children in Russia will not be able to be called, for example, Count, Princess or Tsarina, as was done in 2014 in different regions of the country.

In 2017, 127 newborns were registered, of which 71 were boys and 56 were girls. Popular male names this year were: Mikhail, Andrey, Artyom, Grigory, Miron. For women - Sofia (Sofia), Vasilisa, Alisa, Margarita.
Rarely used names still include such traditional names as Irina, Vera, Yulia, Natalya, Alexander, Evgeny, Sergey, Igor. For comparison: 2014 - 226 children were registered; 100 boys and 126 girls. The most common names: Mikhail, Artyom, Pavel - for boys; Maria, Daria, Ksenia - for girls. 2015 - registered - 194 newborns; boys - 111, girls - 83. Common names: male names - Dmitry, Artyom, Maxim; female - Maria, Elizabeth, Anna. 2016: 186 children were registered in the Civil Registry Office. Boys - 100, girls - 86. Popular male names of 2016 - Artyom, Ilya, Maxim; female - Maria, Victoria, Elizabeth.
In 2017, 156 happy family unions were registered. Based on age estimates, we can say that most of the grooms are over 35 years of age, and the brides are between 25 and 34 years of age. The same picture was observed in 2016. In 2014 and 2015 the largest number of brides and grooms were in the “25 to 34” category.
In the past year, 15 marriages with foreign citizens were registered. The top three are still headed by Ukraine - 6 people, Azerbaijan, Moldova and Belarus - 2 people each. For comparison: in 2014 there were 21 marriages with foreign citizens. Ukraine - 9 people; Tajikistan - 3 people; Uzbekistan - 3 people. 2015 - 36 marriages with citizens of other states. Ukraine - 20 people; Tajikistan - 4 people; Moldova - 3 people. 2016 - 19 interstate marriages: Ukraine - 8, Uzbekistan - 4, Tajikistan - 2.
In 2017, 94 divorces were registered. For comparison: for 2016 - 100, for 2015 - 94, for 2014 - 141. The main age category of those getting divorced are citizens from 25 to 39 years old.
The sad statistics on people who have left us are as follows: 2017 - 208 people, of which 109 were men, 99 women. For comparison: 2016 claimed 234 people (leap year!), 117 men and 117 women. In 2015, 182 people died: men - 86 and women - 96. 2014 took away -204 people from us. 115 men and 89 women.
In the past year, the Civil Registry Office issued 11 records of acts of change of name. Of these, 9 changes were made by women and 2 by men. This is a normal, predictable situation. I would like to clarify right away that, in accordance with the civil code of the Russian Federation, a person’s name includes three components: proper name, patronymic and surname. Therefore, it is possible to change one, two or all components of the name. Men change their first and last names more often. Women change their last name more often. For comparison: 2014 - 17 name changes, of which 4 were men, 13 were women. 2015 - 12 name changes, men - 5, women - 7.
In 2016, 19 people registered a name change, incl. 3 men and 16 women.
Ahead - 2018. On these holidays, I want to wish everyone health, optimism, love and, of course, magic.
