History of the monastery

In the 1860s, the Archbishop of Volyn and Zhytomyr Modest  (Strelbitsky) brought to Zhytomyr a gift from Patriarch Hierotheos of Antioch - the head of St. Anastasia of Rome. Archbishop Anthony  (Khrapovitsky), who took over the episcopal chair, made sure that the head of the saint "appeared open to all Christians of the Volyn region." In 1903, with the permission of the Holy Synod, the head of the venerable martyr was transferred to the Zhytomyr Spaso-Preobrazhensky Cathedral.

In 1935 the cathedral was closed, the relics disappeared. But in 1941, during the occupation, when the cathedral was opened, the head of the saint returned. After the war, the cathedral was not closed, but its lower church was confiscated from the community; power, as before, disappeared. However, there is a legend about their return.

In the spring of 1999, on the outskirts of Zhytomyr, called Malevanka, on the site of a former sanatorium, the first convent in the history of the city was opened.

In one of the old buildings, the church of St. Sergius of Radonezh, a bell tower was built on the territory. In August 2002, a cathedral was laid in honor of the Holy Martyr Anastasia of Rome, the patroness of Zhytomyr, with the lower chapel of St. Seraphim of Sarov.

Prayer to the Monk Martyr Anastasia of Rome

Praise be to virgins and glory to martyrs, reverend Anastasia! We fall down to you in tenderness of our hearts and pray for your intercession with the Lord. If we don’t partake of your purity and fearless confession of yours, more than many transgressions and fierce falls and apostasy attracted the wrath of God, but we don’t want to die in our sins and, looking at your masculine exploits, we take up arms to overcome our passions. This is leading, because apart from grace-filled help we can do nothing good, we ask you to give us from the Lord. For you, the most glorious reverend martyr, have acquired great boldness to the Master, as if you glorified Him in your pure soul and in your body with suffering, despising all the temptations and punishments of the tormentor, tormenting the uprooting of teeth and nails, and sweetly enduring the cutting off of breasts and hands and feet , you boldly cried out: "Christ is my wealth and praise." In the same way, from that wealth and our poverty, give spiritual gifts and from immeasurable sins, keep our belly, ask for peace and serenity for us, protect us from need and despondency with your intercession, guide us to each other in obedience and brotherly love, and to the Lord the eyes of our hearts always raise, in a hedgehog, glorify us the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, the power, and your warm intercession forever and ever. Amen.

HISTORY OF THE MONASTERY

Not far from Zhytomyr, on the ruins of the former count's estate, where an anti-tuberculosis sanatorium was located in the Soviet years, today the convent of St. Anastasia the Roman Martyr is developing. Through the labors and prayers of meek nuns, neat cells, a small church and a most beautiful cathedral appeared here. This area bears the poetic name Malevanka.

The flame of living faith was lit here in the spring of 1999. Since then, the sisters of the monastery have constantly felt the invisible presence of their heavenly patroness - Anastasia the Roman, who is also the patroness of Zhytomyr.

Saint Anastasia lived during the days of Tsar Decius and his co-ruler Valerian. After the death of her parents, she was brought up in a convent located near Rome, in a secluded place. Barely reaching adulthood, the girl became so beautiful that many noble Romans longed to take her as their wife. But the ascetic, rejecting worldly blessings, became a nun. Outraged pagans tried to slander her in front of the commander Provos. “This girl,” they said, “not only does not want to have a husband, but also outrages our way of life, mocks our gods and believes in the Crucified One.”

Hearing about the beauty of the young nun, the commander ordered his servants to immediately bring her. Breaking into the monastery, they put iron chains around the girl's neck and dragged her into the city.
Wanting to spare Anastasia, the military leader Prov advised her to bow to the pagan "gods" and marry "a noble-born husband close to the royal throne" (perhaps he meant himself). When the saint renounced all the charms of worldly life, they stretched her out and tied her head down to four pillars, beat her with sticks and burned her with fire. But instead of moaning, she prayed. Then the executioners tied her to the wheel and, turning, broke all the bones. Anastasia again turned to the Lord, and - the wheel suddenly stopped, and she, untied by an invisible force, stood up completely healthy and unharmed. Seeing such a miracle, the commander did not come to his senses, but, on the contrary, intensified the torment: Anastasia's ribs were shaved, her tongue was pulled out, and finally her head was cut off. The holy body was thrown out to be devoured by beasts, but it remained intact: the believers collected the severed parts and hid them in a secluded place...

In the 60s of the XIX century, the honest head of St. Anastasia arrived in Zhitomir: as a gift from Patriarch Hierotheos of Antioch, she was brought by Archbishop Modest (Strelnitsky) of Volyn and Zhytomyr. Before the revolution, the shrine was in the lower church of the Holy Transfiguration Cathedral. Through prayer appeals to St. Anastasia the Roman, many miracles and healings took place. Pilgrims came to the miraculous relics not only from Volhynia, but also from Kazan, St. Petersburg, Warsaw ... Here deputies from the Volyn region were blessed to the State Duma, students of parochial schools celebrated the New Year, recruits prayed before being sent to the fronts of the First World War.

During the years of Bolshevik persecution, St. Anastasia's Church was desecrated and closed. The honest head mysteriously disappeared and appeared only in 1941, when services in the monastery resumed.
For the second time, she disappeared at a time when the temples began to close again. Believing Zhytomyr residents hope that with time the relics of St. Anastasia will be found again. Perhaps the sincere prayer of the nuns of the recently opened St. Anastasius Convent will help this hope come true and the Lord will again reveal the honest head of the Martyr Anastasia.

The monastery area is approximately two hectares. The monastery church is equipped like a house church: several chambers were united into one space, solea (the outer side of the altar) was allocated with arches, the iconostasis was covered with gold - and it turned out to be a marvelous, beautifully painted church. The icon of the Mother of God “Joy of All Who Sorrow” also amazes with its beauty. There is also a small wooden shrine with the relics of saints in the temple.

Now the construction of the cathedral is underway in the monastery. The sisters of this monastery sometimes come to the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra and humbly ask for alms for the construction of the temple. Many put their modest contribution into a wooden box. It is from such patches and dimes that the majestic walls of the cathedral grow.

About how the cathedral was built, it is necessary to tell separately. Among the spiritual children of the founder of the monastery, mother Rafaila, there were people who were very wealthy, and who held high positions in Ukraine and Russia. So, when mother, at the insistence of doctors, was undergoing treatment in Yalta, the mayor of the city, having learned about her arrival and got to know her, was ready to leave all his administrative affairs and be inseparable from the schema woman.
Mother was also honored by the well-known in Russia baron and philanthropist Eduard von Falz-Fein, who, with the support of the Russian Ambassador to Ukraine Viktor Chernomyrdin, assisted in the manufacture and delivery of art work of cast cathedral gates with images of St. Anastasia and St. Seraphim of Sarov (author - People's Artist of Russia Sergey Presekin , co-author of the murals of the Moscow Cathedral of Christ the Savior; sculptors - corresponding members of the Russian Academy of Arts Alexei Vetshev and Dmitry Tugarinov). The doors, according to the conclusion of the expert commission of the Fund for Assistance to Sculptors of Russia "Sculptor", are recognized as a unique work of art and are included in the "Art of Russia" catalog ("Rassion art guide-2009").

The lower temple of the cathedral - in the name of St. Seraphim of Sarov - is crowned with a carved iconostasis, and the upper gilded 11-meter four-tiered iconostasis will be decorated with carved cherubs. The well-known temple in the name of the Great Martyr Catherine in St. Petersburg, architect Konstantin Ton, was taken as a model for the project of the monastery cathedral. The steps of the temple and the basement are decorated with compositions made of Leznikovsky red granite (the mausoleum on Red Square in Moscow was built from it); there will be more than 240 granite balusters under the railing of the stairs leading to the temple. Compositions of green spaces around the cathedral were planned by the chief florist-biologist of the famous estate-reserve of the counts Pototsky "Sofiyivka" in Uman. This miraculous cathedral is a kind of reflection of the spiritual greatness of the founder of the monastery, mother Rafaila. According to the words of King David, “Holy is your temple, wondrous in righteousness” (Ps. 64:5-6).

“Always rejoice. Pray without ceasing. Give thanks for everything (1 Thess. 5:18)” – this is the principle of life of the inhabitants of this amazing monastery. Here they speak quietly, but always clearly. Everyone is very close to each other, but they refer to each other as “you”. They know why they came to this otherworldly world. Here, to the islands of miraculous power, a stream of people flocks.
