Ilya Ilyich spends his life in dreams, imagining himself a great man whom everyone loves and reveres. Less often, he dreams of a quiet life with a loving wife and children. One day Oblovom, reflecting on his existence, asked himself the question: “Why am I like this?”. But not finding an answer to the question posed, Ilya Ilyich plunges into a sweet dream. He dreams of his native Oblomovka.

Oblomov's dream can be divided into three parts. In the first part, we see the main character as a little boy of about seven years old. It is worth noting that little Ilyusha was a very lively, inquisitive and agile child. The boy grew up surrounded by care and supervision of nannies, who did not allow him to set foot and step on his own. Ilyusha was a very observant boy, he noticed every little thing. It was this observation of a measured and unhurried life that determined the character of the protagonist. It must be said that such an order of life was to Oblomov's liking, but such a life was full of shortcomings. Monotony and boredom cannot be an example to follow.

One of the most important occupations of the Oblomov family was eating. Food for them has become an integral ritual, repeated every day. As a rule, serfs prepared food, and Ilyusha's parents were engaged in the selection of products.

Goncharov ironically shows us the boy's parents. They, too, were not busy with anything, lived at the expense of their serfs and enjoyed every day they lived.

After dinner, the entire Oblomov estate fell into a dream, and then little Ilyusha had the opportunity to be independent.

The second part of the dream takes us to one of the winter evenings, when Oblomov's nanny told him fairy tales. Ilyusha was very fond of listening to the nurse's stories. Life in Oblomovka is measured, it seemed to him the continuation of a fairy tale. Over time, the fairy tale mixed up with the life of the already adult Ilya Ilyich, who remained a child who did not know how to live a real life.

The third part of Oblomov's dream shows us Ilya as a teenage boy. At that moment he was thirteen or fourteen years old. Not far from Oblomovka was the village of Verkhlevo. There he studied with a German named Stoltz. Together with Ilya, Stolz's son Andrey, who later became Oblomov's best friend, studied. Perhaps Stolz would have taught Ilyusha something, brought up a strong personality in him, but Verkhlevo was part of Oblomovka, and a slow and measured life also reigned there. Carefree pictures of the surrounding life gave a false idea of ​​real life. All this, in the end, showed Ilyusha how to “correctly” live.

In addition, attention is drawn to the author's attitude to the events. On the one hand, he has a negative attitude towards the way of life of the Oblomov family, he condemns the behavior of Ilyusha's parents, who did not allow the boy to be independent. Ilyusha studied only for the sake of a certificate, and not for knowledge.

On the other hand, Goncharov also grew up in such a family. He describes with trepidation the childhood of the protagonist, because it reminded him of his childhood. But Goncharov managed to “escape” from such a “sleepy” life, he brought up strong character traits in himself and became a real person. And the small and inquisitive Ilyusha became a hostage to the environment, in which it was impossible to develop in a different direction.

The only concern for the inhabitants of the village was the extraction of food and the arrangement of conditions for recreation.

At the beginning of the dream, Oblomov appears in the guise of a seven-year-old boy. He is cheerful, playful, everything is interesting to him, everything makes him delight and curiosity, he seeks to know the world in all its manifestations. But the overprotection of his mother and nanny interferes with his endeavors. He is not allowed to play in the sun so that his head does not get hot, in bad weather they dress him so that he cannot move. In the middle of the day, the hour of sleep came in the whole village, when even the nanny fell asleep. In those brief moments, the child was left to himself.

Childhood

Further, Ilya sees himself as already thirteen years old. The customs of Oblomovka's life have already settled down quite firmly inside him. He no longer knows that it is possible to live somehow differently than his parents. Teaching does not attract him, firstly, because for this he has to get out to the neighboring estate to the Stolts, and secondly, Ilya does not see the point in it. Any desire expressed by a teenager is immediately fulfilled by two or three servants, and all the care of the mother is to ensure that the son is cheerful, healthy and fat.

Ilya's servant Zakhar still dresses the boy, reminds him to wash himself and ties his shoelaces. Oblomov is no longer interested in anything. And if he has a desire to do something himself, his parents shout with one voice - why? So all his aspirations came to naught.

Fairy tale

The intonation of the narration is reminiscent of a fairy tale, conveys the poetry of an old village way of life, a folk tale, a mournful song. Nature is spiritualized in Oblomovka: the sun shines brighter, and the sky leans towards the earth in order to hug it more tightly. Running and jumping as far as he could, Ilyusha began to closely observe the world around him. Like a sponge, he absorbed various phenomena that deeply sunk into his soul, grew and matured with him.

Ilyusha's parents also did not sit idle: the old man Oblomov, sitting by the window, controlled every step of the servants, and his mother gave them endless instructions. Her "main concern was the kitchen and dinner", preparation for which began immediately after morning tea. In Oblomovka, great attention was paid to caring for food. Here they raised the fattest geese and turkeys, baked the most delicious pies, made the best pickles and jams in the area.

After dinner came "the hour of the universal afternoon nap". The whole house seemed to fall into a stupor, and Ilyusha invariably took advantage of this. He freely climbed the dovecote, explored the garden, the ditch, ran out of the gate. After sleep, all the households gathered for tea, and then went about their business. With the onset of dusk, supper time came, after which the house plunged into a sweet, serene sleep.

Then Oblomov dreamed of a different time. On winter snowy evenings, when a snowstorm raged outside the window, the nanny told him amazing tales that captured his imagination for the rest of his life. Already as an adult, Ilya Ilyich often felt sad about “why a fairy tale is not life, and life is not a fairy tale.”

Further, Oblomov "saw himself a boy of thirteen or fourteen." He studied at the boarding school of the German Stolz, who not only taught him to read and write, but also tried to re-educate the pampered barchuk. “The German was a sensible and strict man”, and, perhaps, Ilyusha would have gained wits from him if his native Oblomovka had not been located near the boarding house. The boy adopted the unhurried lifestyle of his parents, who did not strive for anything, did not set any goals for themselves. "They did not want and would not love another life." In raising their son, they only worried about “so that the child is always cheerful and eats a lot.”

Sending Ilyusha to a boarding school for a week, his mother supplied him with all kinds of dishes, and all because "the Germans don't feed fat." At every opportunity, be it a holiday, the arrival of guests or bad weather, she left her son at home for a long time.

Realizing that it is possible to acquire ranks, crosses and money “only through learning”, loving parents wanted to “get a certificate somehow, which would say that Ilyusha had passed all the sciences and arts”.

So Ilya grew up, like a flower in a greenhouse. He eagerly sought to explore the world, frolic, play snowballs with the village boys, but his parents saw in this glorious liveliness of character only a threat to his health, and carefully wrapped the boy in warm blankets.

There is a sorceress in that side who gives the one she likes both wealth and happiness. And although, as an adult, Ilya Ilyich knew for sure that there was no sorceress, from time to time he unconsciously felt sad why a fairy tale is not life, and life is not a fairy tale.

Further, Ilya Ilyich suddenly saw himself as a boy of 13 or 14 years old. He studied already in the village of Verkhlevo, in the boarding school of the German Stolz, the local manager of a wealthy landowner. Stolz had a son Andrei of the same age. Perhaps Ilyusha would have had time to learn everything from him if Oblomovka had been away from Verkhlevo, otherwise all Oblomov's foundations extended to her, with the exception of Stolz's house.

Then the dream takes Ilya Ilyich to a long living room in his parents' house. Everything is there: the mother knits something and from time to time yawns, the father, with his hands folded back, walks up and down the room, in perfect pleasure, there are also relatives, they say little, since they spend the whole day together: then about the weather, sometimes about the harvest, sometimes they remember when one or another relative visited them, then they remember those who have gone to another world. This makes everyone sad. But nothing ever violates the regularity and tranquility of this house.

The holidays are over, and it's time to take Ilyusha to Stolz, again for a week. As soon as they don’t treat him and what they don’t give with him, and all this is because the Germans don’t feed fat. It happens that a boy is cunning, complains that he is unwell - then no study, another week at home.

Having found out that literacy was not enough, all sorts of other sciences were needed in order to become a titular adviser or collegiate assessor, the parents began to worry about how to get a certificate for Ilyushenka, which would say that he had passed all the sciences and arts.

Stolz was different. He sought to re-educate the Oblomov barchon in his own way, but nothing happened: the son of Stolz did translations for Oblomov, prompted him to take lessons.

And so Oblomov grew, like a flower in a greenhouse. His parents were worried that he would catch a cold or fall and break something, and would not let him frolic.
