But no external evaluations in this phase matter. Blinded by passion, lovers are so intoxicated with their feelings that they lose sleep and appetite, any activity becomes an obstacle in their all-consuming love.

Passionate love can be unrestrained because it is a liberation from all the limitations, devoid of love, which we used to call normal. In a spiritual sense, to be blinded by passion means to see in another person God, a divine essence worthy of a generation. In ancient India, this true vision of the divine and immersion in its effulgence was called bhakti, or zealous service. Starting from the pious hymns of the Rigveda, the oldest testimonies of the human generation, and up to the present time, bhakti is undoubtedly the most accessible way of approaching God. What makes romantic love so similar to religious love is the feeling of connection. The merging of one spirit with another gives rise to the strongest ecstasy. Perhaps no word is more suitable to describe the madness of passion than the word "new". Liberation from old boundaries is like a birth that makes everything “new” around.

The source of this newness is not a new person, but a shift in perception. The feeling of merging with another person comes from the brain. We still have no biochemical explanation for the suddenness and strength of this shift, although researchers have found that lovers have increased levels of neuropeptides associated with spicy pleasure, in particular serotonin. Medical professionals also know that love boosts the immune response. Yet the scientific paradigm is unlikely to explain how romantic love succeeds in breaking down the walls of separation that define the self. From early childhood, there is an irreversible tendency to create an increasingly strong distinction between the entities called "I" and "you" as the source of suffering. Yet there can be no greater torment for the bhakta, or devout believer, than to be away from God. It's the same in love relationships - getting rid of separation brings a sense of liberation that can only be compared with religious insight.

I don't mean to say that every lover feels this keenly. Sometimes attraction develops very slowly, in other cases only one of the partners can experience passionate love. When the one to whom your passion is addressed does not respond in kind, passion turns into an egocentric imagination.

What makes lovers so obscure to rational thinkers—many psychologists don't even want to acknowledge the greatness of the state called love—is that lovers return to a state devoid of the useful ability to discriminate. What seems to psychologists as a simple regression, from a spiritual point of view, may turn out to be a return to the starting point. The gift of love lies in the fact that it erases the imprints that have accumulated in our psyche, which determine our belief in separateness, returning us to the reality in which we were born and which contains only love.

Lovers often say that they live in two worlds - overwhelmed by the overflowing feeling of merger - and at the same time realizing that such a merger cannot be real. A loved one is not a fairy-tale hero, the world does not bathe in perfection - all this is just temporary madness. Now we have come to the most delicate moment, because two opposite perceptions are fighting inside and only one of them has the right to exist.

The problem is that both of them are true. But how can two different perceptions of the same event be of equal value? This is the key moment of any spiritual event, because perception is a choice. The psychological description of the state of being in love is so opposite to the spiritual one that it is hard to believe that they refer to the same phenomenon.

This list is enough to understand why even the most eternal of experiences, which reveals the soul and opens the heart to bliss, does not stand the test of time. A whole worldview is directed against him, which simply does not recognize him as real. Most people are not just not prepared for the discovery of the spirit, they are actively set against it, their consciousness is shaped by materialism, which has nurtured modern psychology and deprived love of any “higher” meaning.

But love has the power to unite our two worlds. Metaphysics asserts that the world is immanent and transcendent. Immanent means "material, changing, subject to time." Transcendent means "eternal, timeless, beyond the material". The lover sees a more real world, because in ordinary things he finds a spiritual light that really exists in them. The rest do not notice the transcendence of the world, so this question simply does not arise for them: we do the best we can, but we cannot claim to know the truth.

The secret is not whether you fall in love and start to go beyond the old reality, because this is not in doubt. The mysterious thing is that the preoccupation with the object of one's love is at the same time divine. But visiting a spirit is an elusive phenomenon, and besides, this guest is very impatient: the spirit will either take you with him or leave you very quickly.

The transcendence of reality can take a variety of forms. The astronauts, who are in awe of the sight of the Earth, a blue pearl sparkling against the black background of the universe, have gone beyond reality; climbers, the first conquerors of peaks, tell about the experience of delight that goes beyond the limits of reality. In other words, being in love is not as unique as it might seem - in fact, given how few of us go into space or climb Chomolungma, it is simply the most accessible transcendental experience. All these peak experiences are united by the same insight: a person feels that fear simply does not exist, because death is not an disappearance, but only a transition, that love surrounds and nourishes us all, and that some part of us lives outside the world of struggle and worries. , in the realm of pure being.

From a spiritual point of view, passionate love opens us to the same insight, love serves as a trigger - like mountains, spacewalk, near-death state.
