Any profession makes demands on interests: in some cases it is an interest in something new, in others - in practical activities, the labor process or its result. .

Interest(from lat. interest - matters, important) - the attitude of a person to an object as to something valuable, attractive to her. In psychology, interest is understood as an active cognitive orientation of a person to a particular subject. Interest is an individual psychological feature of a person, which is characterized by a selective focus on the phenomena of reality. Interest is manifested in a positive emotional reaction and intellectual cognitive activity. Only in the presence of these two signs can we assume that a person has one or another interest.

In relation to the choice of a profession, interests are a positive attitude towards a certain area of ​​work, the desire for knowledge and activity in this direction. The content and nature of interests are directly related to the motives and needs of a person. The ability to show interest is associated with the peculiarities of temperament: melancholic and phlegmatic people have more stable and deep interests. But choleric and sanguine people have broader interests. Sometimes we ask: “Is this an interesting book?” or “Interesting movie?”. However, these are incompatible phrases from the point of view of logic, since interest is not a property of a thing (a book, a movie, etc.), but a property of a person. One person may find a book interesting, but another may not. There are no uninteresting objects, there are people who are not interested in them. And the interests of different people are not the same.

Interests vary:

  • by content (for example, literature, music, technology, etc.);
  • in latitude (versatile or narrow, aimed at only one object or its side);
  • by depth (deep or superficial);
  • by duration (sustainable and unstable).

The importance of interests in a person's life is great: they encourage one to acquire knowledge, broaden one's horizons, help to overcome difficulties and obstacles. The stability of interests is judged by a person's ability to overcome difficulties in the way of satisfying these interests. For example, if a student who is fond of biology and attends an appropriate circle is faced with the need to translate a very interesting article on biology from a foreign language that he does not speak well, agrees to do this and does it, then his interest is certainly stable. Interest is formed in a real case: until you try, you will not understand whether it is for you or not. Therefore, try to try yourself in different types of activities (sports, literature, art, science) to the extent and at the level at which it is possible in school circles and sections, music schools, etc.

Interests, if not developed, may soon weaken or die out altogether. As a deep and systematic study of a particular subject, interests are fixed and gradually can become stable. Such interests often develop into inclinations.

Inclinations and choice of profession

inclination- this is the desire to engage in a certain activity, the thirst for this activity. These are human desires, motives, needs for certain types of activity, striving not only for the result, but also for the very process of what a person does. A real inclination usually combines a steady interest in certain phenomena of reality and a steady desire to act in this direction. An inclination is an attraction, an interest in an activity.

We can talk about a propensity to work if a person is attracted not only by the result, but also by the process of work itself. All significant professional achievements have grown out of interests, which, under favorable conditions, have developed into inclinations. If interests are expressed by the formula “I want to know”, then inclinations are associated with the formula “I want to do”. It is one thing to be interested in books about animals, but quite another to find pleasure in the daily work of caring for animals.

Inclinations are not only manifested, but also formed in activity.

In relation to the choice of profession, the following types of inclinations are distinguished:

  • propensity to work with people;
  • propensity to work with technology;
  • propensity to work with conventional signs;
  • propensity to work with plants and animals;
  • propensity to work with artistic images.

There are many similarities between interests and inclinations, but there are also differences. You can, for example, show interest in cinema: follow all the movie premieres and go to the cinema with pleasure, read books on cinema, study the biographies of artists, but at the same time not strive at all for activities in the field of cinema. There are many football fans who do not miss a single football match, but do not do physical education or sports themselves, and do not even do morning exercises. These are precisely the cases when there is interest, but there is no inclination.

Of course, it is better to choose a profession in accordance with your stable interests and inclinations. The best option in a situation of professional choice is when interests and inclinations are coordinated and complement each other. And only in the case when life professional plans are connected with interests, one speaks of professional interests.

Skills and career choice

When we try to understand and explain why different people, placed by the circumstances of life in the same or approximately the same conditions, achieve different successes, we turn to the concept of "ability", believing that the difference in successes can be quite satisfactorily explained by them. The same concept is used by us when we need to realize why some people acquire knowledge, skills and abilities faster and better than others. What are abilities?

Abilities are an integral part of a person's professional fitness, closely related to interests and inclinations. Capabilities- these are individual psychological properties of a person, on which the possibility of successful implementation of a certain type of activity depends. Abilities are not limited to a person's knowledge, skills, abilities. They are found in the speed, depth and strength of mastering the methods and techniques of some activity and are internal mental regulators that determine the possibility of acquiring them.

Abilities cannot be innate. Only inclinations that underlie the development of abilities can be innate. A person is not born capable of this or that activity, his abilities are formed, formed, developed in a properly organized corresponding activity during his life, under the influence of education and training. Without observing a person in activity, it is impossible to judge the presence or absence of his abilities. The individual abilities of a person do not yet guarantee the successful completion of complex activities. A subtle perception of form and color developed in a person does not yet make him an artist. An excellent ear for music does not in itself create a musician. For the successful mastery of any activity, a certain combination of separate, particular abilities that form a unity is necessary.

Distinguish between general mental and special abilities.

General abilities provide relative ease and productivity in the acquisition of knowledge and the implementation of various activities. General abilities are mental abilities: the criticality of the mind, its independence, depth, inquisitiveness, speed of mental orientation, speed of thinking. In the structure of the abilities of some people, these general qualities can be extremely pronounced, which indicates that they have versatile abilities, about general abilities for a wide range of different activities, specialties and occupations. People with general (mental) abilities, as a rule, quickly master new activities, areas of knowledge, and are well trained.

Special abilities- This is a system of personality traits that help to achieve high results in any particular area of ​​activity.

There are the following types of special abilities:

  • educational and creative;
  • mathematical;
  • structural and technical;
  • musical;
  • literary;
  • artistic and visual.

Educational and creative abilities differ from each other in that the former determine the success of training and education, the assimilation of knowledge, skills, and the formation of personality traits by a person, while others involve the creation of objects of material and spiritual culture, the production of new ideas, discoveries and works, in a word - individual creativity in various fields of human activity.

As part of mathematical ability an important role is played by mathematical memory (not memory for numbers, but memory for general schemes of reasoning and proof, for methods for solving typical problems), the ability for logical thinking, and quick and broad generalization of mathematical material. What distinguishes people capable of mathematics is the ability to grasp the order in which the elements necessary for a mathematical proof should be located. The presence of this kind of intuition is the basic element of mathematical creativity.

Structural and technical abilities include such components as observation in the field of technical devices, which allows you to see their advantages and imperfections, the accuracy and liveliness of spatial representations, combinatorial ability (the ability to make new combinations from certain parts), technical thinking.

Musical ability make up the unity of the modal feeling, manifested in the emotional perception and easy recognition of melodies, the ability for auditory representation, musical and rhythmic feeling, absolute pitch (the ability to accurately determine the pitch), vocal abilities.

At the core literary ability lie creative activity and aesthetic position, uniting particular abilities - observation, impressionability (emotional experience of the perceived), creative imagination.

TO artistic and visual abilities include the ability to correctly assess proportions and light relations, the ability to feel the expressive function of color, creative imagination, etc.

It is not difficult to see that from the point of view of the success of mastering a specific professional activity, not only general mental and complex special abilities are important, but also other types of abilities. For example, a cutter needs an eye, and a perfumer needs a high olfactory sensitivity, etc. A teacher needs a well-developed speech ability, and an educator needs a good communication ability. If a person distinguishes smells well and remembers them, these are the abilities necessary for a chemist, taster, cook, etc. If a person is able to retain many numbers, letters, words or external signs in memory, he can combine them in his mind - these are the abilities necessary for a mathematician, a programmer , constructor.

Abilities reflect the capabilities of a person, affect the degree of success and the time of mastering various types of activities. Each profession has its own specific difficulties, the so-called requirements imposed by the profession on a person. If they coincide with the personal qualities of a person, his individual psychological characteristics and capabilities, then they talk about the professional suitability of a person.
