The Izmail Institute of Water Transport was opened in 1997 in accordance with the order of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. The choice of Izmail, a relatively small city on the scale of Ukraine, to open a higher educational institution in it with those areas of training of specialists, as it is today, was not accidental, but quite natural. Indeed, in the south of Ukraine there are the Danube and Black Sea shipping companies with their ports and ship repair plants, which are in dire need of specialists who would own modern advanced production technologies. It was also taken into account that the geographical location of the city on the banks of the Danube - a large river of European significance, which is an outlet to the sea and the center of Europe - plays a big role in the development of the economy of our state. All this led to the creation of the institute of water transport in Izmail. The founders of the Institute are: the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences of National Progress, headed by the President - Academician A. F. Onipko; citizen of Ukraine Idiyatullina N.A.; citizen of Ukraine Bagriy-Shakhmatov L.V. - Doctor of Law, Professor. The Institute as a higher educational institution took place, occupying its niche in the educational space of the south of the Odessa region "... in order to preserve and develop the intellectual potential of talented and gifted youth of the Danube region." Today, the Izmail Institute of Water Transport has become a real competitor not only to the "dinosaur" - the Izmail State Humanitarian University, but also to many Odessa universities. The first students of IIHT in 1997 were 80 graduates of city and district schools, the first rector of IIHT was Moriy G.P. - Doctor of Historical Sciences, professor, academician, who still takes an active part in the life of the institute. Over the years of its existence, the administration and the founders of the institute have done a lot: in 1997, the only faculty of economics and law, which united different specialties, was divided into 4 faculties, each of which today accurately reflects the specifics of training specialists: legal, economics and entrepreneurship, maritime and river transport, as well as the Faculty of Translation, which trains translators of English and German. About 1800 full-time and part-time students study at IIHT. The activities of the faculties are provided by 8 departments, 5 of which are graduates. Every year, more than 500 young people from 8 districts of the Danube region opt for the institute of water transport, where, without leaving far from their homes, they can get a quality higher education.
