How to save a VKontakte image without losing quality. Uploading large VKontakte photos in high quality
There are two main questions regarding photo hosting on VKontakte: what image size will the uploaded photos have and what quality will they be. A week ago I wrote about the size of photos uploaded to VKontakte, that there are two ways through Explorer and Drag&Drop. Otherwise, these methods are called flash and HTML5 downloading. To receive in your albums large photos, you need to use the second method. After that, I carefully studied the records about the VKontakte photo uploader in order to approach the second question: the quality or image compression algorithm. I publish the second material on my website, due to the demonstration of original and compressed different ways photographs.
First, you need to determine at what resolution the user views photos most often. Most monitors have 1280 pixels on the long side; you can check the statistics and they will confirm this. Using the browser in full-window mode, the user will receive a displayed image with a long side of 1050-1060 pixels, depending on the program. To achieve maximum quality from VKontakte in conjunction with any browser, it makes no sense to download images bigger size, otherwise the photos will be compressed by VKontakte or the browser script. The task is to achieve a minimum of operations on images from the VKontakte processor; the photographer must control the size of the output image and sharpening parameters.
Secondly, the VKontakte photo processor works with sequential JPEG, when the image is encoded block-by-block from left to right and top to bottom. VKontakte does not support progressive JPEG.
Now I’ll tell you about the experiments I did with the image. I took a photo of the main building of Moscow State University, overlaid a copyright with a red heart, this color has a meaning. I saved the image with 100% quality, and saved a copy of it with increased sharpness and 100% quality. All operations can be read from the names of the original files.
Uploaded photos to VKontakte. The flash or HTML5 method does not matter as long as we do not go beyond 1280 px on the long side, the compression quality is the same. The first photo is the original uploaded via flash, then HTML5, the third photo with increased sharpness.
The Live community Q&A contains excerpts from a conversation with VKontakte support, where it is stated that the VKontakte image processor compresses by 20%. This is not so, according to my conservative estimates, 40% or more. To demonstrate my statement, there are two files, original and shredded, saved in Photoshop via Save for WEB with quality 60. Only with a decrease in quality by 40%, I got files of similar size. The VKontakte image compression algorithm is not described anywhere.
The last stage, the most interesting, is comparing images. To compare two images I used the Difference mode. Two identical images in blending mode Difference will give black field. It makes no sense to compare the original with 60% quality and the file from VKontakte, there is a difference, but there is no reference point for image quality. Examples of comparing the original 100% and 60%, then the original 100% and compressed by the VKontakte processor. As you can see in the image, there is a difference, but it is not significant. In order to visually assess the deterioration in image quality, the contrast was forcibly raised 8 times, the light point of the contrast curve was shifted by 224 points.

Ripped original 100% and after the VKontakte processor. The situation is similar to the previous picture. There is a difference in image quality, but it can only be detected when the problem is artificially intensified.
By and large, the VKontakte processor has one drawback - it does not work well with uniform colors, especially red. At the beginning I asked you to pay attention to the red heart on the copyright, it is almost uniformly red. In the photographs uploaded to VKontakte, there are a maximum of artifacts in this area of the image. From my experience of shooting, processing photographs and publishing on VKontakte, I can say that I constantly see this in concert photographs with red, blue, green light spotlights Also, VKontakte does not work well with color gradients; such photos appear in stripes. The main thing is to know these shortcomings of the VKontakte processor so that the published photographs appear to be of high quality.

Conclusion. How to upload high quality VKontakte photos? We determine the image size, sharpen the reduced image, save it in Photoshop with maximum quality settings, and upload it to VKontakte. If we want to save an image on a social network in sizes from 1280 to 2560, we use the Drag&Drop method when uploading.
We all know that “contact” greatly spoils the quality of posted photos. While this is not so noticeable in point-and-shoot photographs, the difference is obvious to photographers who have spent a lot of time and effort on processing photographs. A colorful and bright photo fades after adding a “contact” to the album. The work turns from a masterpiece into an ordinary “photo”, of which there are millions. To process the images we will use Photoshop.
Changing the size
When viewed, a photo in “contact” does not stretch more than 1000 px in width. Let's take this value as the maximum width/height size. But as the size decreases, the quality deteriorates and the photo becomes blurry. In order to minimize the negative effect, we will use the following algorithm:
- Go to the image editing window (Image -> Image Size)
- Resize the photo to one and a half times the desired size (1500px on the larger side)
- Select Interpolation “Bicubic, sharper” and save
- Go back to the image editing window
- Resize the photo to the desired size (1000px on the larger side)
- Select Interpolation “Bicubic” and save

Let's save it right!
If you save as standard, via “File -> Save As,” then a lot of unnecessary information will be saved with the photo. This will increase the size of the photo. Such a photo will display well on your local computer, but not on the Internet. In order to save a photo for the Internet, perform the following steps:
- Go to the window for saving the image for the web (File -> Save for web and devices)
- Selecting the JPEG format
- Quality 80
- Check the box “Convert to sRGB” and save
Using this algorithm, our photos will not lose quality when posted on the “contact” social network. Great photos everyone!

“Contact ruins photos!” or How to compress photos into contacts without losing quality.
How many times have I heard this phrase from photographers and not only - “Contact ruins photos! Look at the print, not the screen!” There is, of course, meaning in this statement, but it’s also not worth saying so categorically.
So, the task: How to compress photos to contact without losing quality?
There are 2 main mistakes that people make:
1) Upload photos too much big size and provide its reduction to the contact algorithm. 2) Use a color space other than sRGB
Let’s analyze the algorithm for compressing photos in Photoshop “to contact”, in which we will take into account both of these factors.

The optimal size at the moment, which is comfortable for a person to look at, and which does not suffer so much from pinching, is 1000 points on the long side. Clamping is carried out in 2 stages.
Select Image, Image Size
We set one and a half sizes from the one we want to get, and select the Bicubic reduction algorithm, sharper. This will sharpen the picture, but it will be excessive.
We get rid of “oversharpening” with the second step - we set the final size, in this case it is 1000 points, and select the Bicubic reduction algorithm, for smooth gradients.
The next step is to save the photo to disk.
We select the JPEG file format, quality within 75-85. Be sure to check the Convert to sRGB checkbox.

How to properly upload photos to social networks
When you upload profile photos to Facebook, they are cropped to a square, so it's best to use an image that already has the correct aspect ratio. The VKontakte profile picture should have a maximum size of 200 pixels in width by 500 in height (previously it was possible to upload an image up to 700 pixels in height) and a minimum of 200x200 pixels. When uploading pictures to albums, you do not need to upload images of the original size and trust the VKontakte algorithm to reduce them. It is best to save a photo with a maximum of 1000 pixels in width (for horizontal ones) or 700 pixels in height (for vertical ones). At the same time, they will be displayed quite large on monitors 1280x1024 and higher with optimal sharpness, which can also be adjusted. True, on 1024x768 monitors such pictures will be smaller and lose clarity.
“We upload photos not with 100% quality, but with compression. Whatever coefficient we use, artifacts can always be found in photographs,” writes VKontakte technical support. For optimal clarity, social network experts recommend increasing sharpness after resizing the image, and not before.
To upload large pictures that would be displayed in the entire window on any monitor, before uploading it is worth slightly increasing their sharpness in the photo editor, which partly compensates for blurring when scaling the image. The largest uploaded photo can be 2560x2048 pixels.
When saving in JPG format, the current color rendering profile is added. And when scaling the image, this profile is replaced with standard sRGB, without any conversion. Therefore, before uploading to a social network, it is better to save the image in sRGB. To do this, open the image in Photoshop, select “Save for WEB” (Alt+Shift+Ctrl+S), in the quality settings window that appears, be sure to check “Convert to sRGB”
IN modern world Few people can do without social networks anymore. Millions and billions of photos are poured into the bottomless abyss of the Internet every day from many devices. News about yourself and friends, interesting trips, delicious dinners and romantic dinners... For most users this is enough. For a photographer, the quality of the uploaded content is extremely important (to a certain extent, this is a confirmation of his professionalism). Soul, effort, money and time are invested into each photo - therefore, the loss of quality when uploading an image is especially offensive.
This article is devoted to the nuances of preparing photos for publication on the most popular social networks. Let's talk about optimal file sizes, viewing features on various devices and sharpening algorithms for best quality after downloading.
Resizing an Image
Before we begin describing “social media sizes,” one thing should be clear right away. It is very simple, but not obvious to many, so confusion often arises.
The Image → Image Size dialog box provides two ways to set the image size:
1) by changing the size of the print and setting the desired DPI resolution (or rather PPI) - dots or pixels per inch or centimeter of the print;
2) through resizing in pixels (standard for most users) - they should be used in this case.
The first option, by and large, is necessary only for designers when preparing layouts printed products. If you know the exact technical size of the print and the resolution of the printing machine, Photoshop will automatically calculate the pixel size of the image so that the machine will print it at the optimal resolution. This helps avoid hardware resizing, which can cause text and graphics to lose clarity.
The second option is suitable for those who initially work with photography (i.e. raster graphics), when the initial image size is initially equal to the maximum possible (depending on the resolution of the camera matrix or the settings and model of the scanner). We won’t talk about preparing photographs for printing now; it is important to understand that when preparing an image for publication on the Internet or viewing on monitors DPI resolution(PPI) doesn't affect anything at all. Therefore, the image size in these cases is specified exclusively in pixels.
No need to choose a size less than the maximum allowed by the social network, based on the display on the monitor of a specific model. For example, a photo with a size of 1000px in height, uploaded to VKontakte, will be displayed without distortion on monitors with a resolution of 1920 x 1200 (that is, without resizing by the browser). On monitors with a standard resolution of Full HD 1920 x 1080, it will already be compressed by the browser, which will lead to a loss of clarity. Given that the size change factor will be small, the loss of quality and detail will be quite noticeable.
It is also worth noting that the loss of quality when re-compressing JPGs by the social network server for images small size will be visually more obvious than for large images.
However, when choosing a size, it is important not to overdo it. If the image size more than the maximum allowed by the social network, when loading, the social network server itself will reduce the photo and do it using the fastest algorithm. Of course, in this case, the sharpening necessary for any change in size, which the photographer would do manually, will not follow. The exception is, perhaps, Instagram, in which image processing before loading is performed not by the server, but by the user’s smartphone, and the reduction of the image takes into account the associated loss of detail.
Optimal sizes for uploading photos to social networks

After switching to the new design, VKontakte no longer requires additional tricks (the “drag and drop” method) on the part of the user to upload photos in the maximum allowable size.
It is 2560 pixels horizontally and 2160 pixels vertically.
The maximum allowed size is 2048 pixels on the larger side.
There has been a bit of confusion since Instagram moved away from forced squaring. We'll look into it now.
The horizontal size is always 1080 px. Wherein:
Standard“squares” are loaded at 1080 x 1080 px.
Horizontal photos can have an aspect ratio of 1:1.9 (Vertical:Horizontal), that is, something closer to 1080 x 568 px, or be closer to square (2:3, 3:4, 4:5, 5:7 and etc.). So everyone who is not going to post panoramas on Instagram can breathe easy here.
Vertical images are limited to a 4:5 aspect ratio, which in pixels would mean 1080 x 1350. So, when uploading photos from cameras with a 2:3 aspect ratio, cropping will occur. To avoid this, you need to add fields in advance.
For your convenience, I suggest downloading an operation that automates the work of creating fields and the necessary sharpening when preparing vertical photos for uploading to Instagram. To download correctly, you need to right-click on the link and select “Save as...”.
Fashionbank
This site, beloved by photographers, cannot be fully called a social network, but it probably shouldn’t be offensive to exclude it from the list either.
Photos up to 800 px horizontal size are allowed for uploading to Fashionbank. The vertical size can be any, but the “weight” of the file should not exceed 1 MB.
Sharpening
After resizing the image, you need to sharpen it. How much and in what way depends solely on the taste of the photographer and the size of the original photograph. Therefore, I consider only general recommendations to be appropriate.
Fashionbank
The photo sizes used when publishing on Fashionbank are closest to the sizes used in standard photo preparation “for the web”. Therefore, as an example, we will first consider the sharpening parameters recommended for preparing images for this site, and then adapt them for other social networks.
IN general case to increase sharpness you can use the standard filter Filter → Unsharp Mask with the following parameters:
- Amount = 65-150%,
- Radius = 0.3 (this is the minimum radius setting that affects the entire photo),
- Threshold (Isohelium) = 0.
If you want to achieve "ringing" sharpness, the algorithm can be supplemented by re-applying the Unsharp Mask filter, but with different parameters:
Thus, for VKontakte and Facebook in the best possible way sharpening will be exactly the same algorithm that was described above in the version for Fashionbank, with the same values, but applied twice in a row.
Sharpening for Instagram can be done either directly in the application or with preliminary preparation in Photoshop.
In the second case, sharpness is increased according to the same principle as when preparing a photo “for the Web”/Fashionbank. Also, sharpening for Instagram is included in the image resizing operation for this social network.
Color profile
If you are retouching in a color space other than sRGB, you must convert the colors to standard before saving the photo. color profile- sRGB IEC61966-2.1.
This can be done using the Edit → Convert to Profile command.
In this case, the following parameters are selected: Engine (Engine) - Adobe, Intent (Color conversion algorithm) - Perceptual (Perceptual) or Relative Colorimetric (Relative colorimetric), all the checkboxes that can be checked are checked.
Preservation
Saving occurs in standard mode through the menu File → Save As.
File Format: JPEG, Quality = 12 (maximum), Algorithm: Baseline Optimized.

The largest social network Vkontakte has never indulged photographers. And yet many, many of us post our pictures there, because the Contact audience is truly huge. Everything is there: friends, acquaintances, colleagues, clients. In addition, Contact is rapidly progressing, and if previously photos were limited to tiny (604 by 480) sizes and terrible compression, now there are significantly fewer compression losses, and photos are displayed in almost the entire browser window.
The downside to such rapid progress is that it can be difficult to keep up with. If today photos are processed in one way when loading, then tomorrow they may be loaded in a completely different way! Changes are often not announced or explained. Everything happens quietly and without the user’s knowledge. Which is quite understandable: the site is made as simple as possible, designed for the widest audience.
But let's get back to our photographs. For some time now, Contact has begun to display large photographs that expand almost to the entire screen. The size of the image is limited only by the original resolution of the image, the resolution of the user's monitor and his browser. In this case, the site stores the original and scales the image to fit the user’s window. The key point was that after scaling the photo was sharpened. Which compensated for the blurring after resizing.
Wherein best tactics It was possible to upload large photos to Contact, for example, 1920x1080 in size without additional sharpening. After scaling and sharpening the site itself, the photos looked good.
For some time now, about a month ago, I noticed that Contact stopped sharpening photos. Since then, everything that was loaded according to the old scheme began to look blurry. How can I now upload pictures to Contact? I have several thoughts on this matter.
Preparing photos for uploading to Contact
Part I. Sharpness.
Firstly, if we want to show large (in the entire browser window) photos on VKontakte, then we cannot know the final size of the image, since it depends on the resolution of the viewer’s monitor, as well as his browser and even the settings of this browser.
In the most popular monitor resolution today, 1280x1024, a “full-window” photo on VKontakte turns out to be of the following dimensions:
Firefox 4.0 – 1058 horizontally or 760 vertically.
Opera 11 1054 horizontally or 752 vertically.
Secondly, you need to understand that for optimal clarity, sharpening should occur after resizing the image, and not before, as this happened until recently in Contact algorithms. By the way, the pictures uploaded then are still displayed sharp and neat, i.e. their sharpness increases after scaling.
Thus, now is the best time to prepare your shots 1000px in width or 750px in height (for vertical ones), independently increasing their sharpness before loading. At the same time, they will be displayed quite large on monitors 1280x1024 and higher, with optimal sharpness, which we have adjusted ourselves. Unfortunately, on smaller monitors, such pictures will be smaller and lose image clarity.
If you want to upload large images so that they are displayed in the entire window on any monitor, then before loading you should slightly increase their sharpness, which partly compensates for blurring when scaling the image.
Part II. Color.
Sometimes people complain that Contact spoils the color of photos. But often it is not Contact that is to blame, but the wrong choice of color space for the photograph. Pictures uploaded to the Internet (to any site, not just Contact) must be in the sRGB color space. If the photo is in Adobe RGB, ProPhoto RGB, or any other color space other than sRGB, the colors will appear duller when uploaded online.
Part III. Preparing a photo for Contact in Photoshop
First, let's make sure that our image is in sRGB, to do this, click on the small black triangle in the lower left corner and select “Document Profile” in the menu that appears.
The color space of the photo will appear in the bottom line. We need it to be written there sRGBIEC61966-2.1, if a different color space is specified there, then we need to change it.
This is done simply. Let's go to the menu: Editing - Convert to Profile…
And in the window that appears, in the field Target space select a profile sRGB. Leave the rest alone and click “OK”. It is done!
Second step - resizing. Press the Ctrl+Alt+I keys (Image Size command) and set the width in the window that appears 1000 , if we have a horizontal photo, or height 750 if the photo is vertical. In this case, all the checkboxes must be turned on; the “Maintain proportions” setting will provide us with the correct aspect ratio. In the Interpolation section there should be Bicubic (best for smooth gradients). You can read how to make this algorithm installed by default in the article.
The third step is sharpening. You can increase sharpness in different ways, sometimes the most exotic. But I will show you one, quite simple but effective, which I use to increase sharpness under WEB.
Menu: Filter - Sharpening - Smart Sharpening…
Options: Effect 500, Radius 0.1.
Remove: Shallow depth blur. The “More accurate” checkbox is enabled.
Now everything is ready. We save the photo in JPEG format with maximum quality (Kontakt will compress it later anyway) and upload it to Contact!)
Part IV. Preparing photos for a Contact in Adobe Lightroom
In order not to get up twice, let's look at how to prepare photos for a Contact using Lightroom. In LR everything is much simpler; you need to configure the export parameters as follows:

I recently had to face this problem personally. The fact that the contact eats up the sharpness was already half the problem, but when the contact changed the color tone of the photo, an obvious question arose - what to do about it?
No matter what I did, I changed the photo format and size, everything was to no avail.

How to put a photo under a contact
We all know that “contact” greatly spoils the quality of posted photos. While this is not so noticeable in point-and-shoot photographs, the difference is obvious to photographers who have spent a lot of time and effort on processing photographs. A colorful and bright photo fades after adding a “contact” to the album. The work turns from a masterpiece into an ordinary “photo”, of which there are millions.

Changing the size
When viewed, a photo in “contact” does not stretch more than 1000 px in width. Let's take this value as the maximum width/height size. But as the size decreases, the quality deteriorates and the photo becomes blurry. In order to minimize the negative effect, we will use the following algorithm:

The point is simple - VKontakte has two methods for uploading photos (three in general, but we don’t take the third into account because it doesn’t have a preview)

The first one uses FLASH technology. When we click the add photo button and select photos, or when we put an avatar. In general, the standard mode spoils everything for us.
For the second, HTML5 technology is used. To use it, you need to drag the photo onto the “Add new photos” sign.
