Radio host and trader Mikhail Moon is known to many primarily as one of the experts in the elite club “What? Where? When?”, but what else is noteworthy in his biography?

Misha was born in the small town of Gatchina, located in the Leningrad region.

Then his family moved to St. Petersburg, where he eventually graduated from gymnasium No. 171.

After school, the boy went to St. Petersburg State University, where in 1996 he received a diploma from the Faculty of Applied Mathematics and Control Processes.

His romance with the game “What? Where? When?" the young man began as a child, when he eagerly awaited each release and froze at the sound of Vladimir Voroshilov’s voice. As soon as he entered the university, Mikhail immediately went to the ChGK sports club called “Kolomna”.

It was there that Moon learned to take a hit, concentrate and go to victory without paying attention to anything around him. It is in the sports version of “What? Where? When?" he played in teams of such experts as Leonid Klimovich and Sergei Vivatenko.

On big screen Mikhail first appeared in 1997 and immediately fell in love with the audience. They saw him as very tactful, pleasant and incredibly erudite young man. The inquisitive mind of the young connoisseur was recognized in 2002 by awarding the Crystal Owl.

By the way, the expert himself notes that he had a hand in obtaining owls by such experts as Dmitry Konovalenko, Rovshan Askerov and even Maxim Potashev.

In 2005, Moon announced that he was ending his career in the television version of the program., but cannot refuse the sports format. The connoisseur stated his departure simply - the excitement was gone and the slightly changed format of the program no longer suited him. True, at that time Mikhail noted that over time he might get bored and return, but so far this has not happened.

Since the same 2005, the intellectual was invited to join the board International Association clubs “What? Where? When?". Moon agreed and stayed with him until 2009.

Among other television programs in which Mikhail Moon was noted, one can highlight “Your Game” on April 19, 1995.

It cannot be said that the intellectual club is only interest and occupation in Mikhail's life. His career has a page dedicated to radio - he is the presenter of two programs on Zenit radio.

These are “Football Aggravation” and “Heading Game”. In serious professional activity Moon's portfolio includes such positions as:

  • Trader JSC "Broker Firm Lenstroymaterialy";
  • Trader of CJSC IC "Energocapital".

On this moment Mikhail is the director of the stock markets department of the Closed Joint Stock Company "BFA".

The personal life of the connoisseur has long since settled down - his wife’s name is Anastasia Gusarova. This couple has a son.

An excerpt characterizing Moon, Mikhail Valerievich

-Have you brought me back, God? – the warrior asked enthusiastically.
-Who are you, human? And why do you call me Lord? – the old man was surprised.
“Who else could have done something like this?” – the man whispered. – And you live almost as if in the sky... That means you are God.
- I am not God, I am his descendant... The blessing is true... Come, if you have come, to our monastery. With a pure heart and a pure thought, you came to throw away your life... So they returned you. Rejoice.
– Who brought me back, Starce?
“They, dear ones, are the “feet of God”... - pointing to the marvelous flowers, the Elder shook his head.
From then on, the legend about the Flowers of the Lord began. They say that they always grow at the abodes of God to show the way to those who come...
Lost in thought, I didn’t notice that I was looking around... and literally woke up right there!.. My amazing miracle flowers grew only around a narrow, dark crack that gaped in the rock, like an almost invisible, “natural” entrance!!! A suddenly heightened instinct led me exactly there...
No one was visible, no one came out. Feeling uncomfortable, coming uninvited, I still decided to try and approached the crack. Again, nothing happened... There was no special protection or any other surprises. Everything remained majestic and calm, as from the beginning of time... And who was there to defend against? Only from people as gifted as the owners themselves?.. I suddenly shuddered - but another similar “Caraffa” could have appeared, who would have been gifted to some extent, and would have just as easily “found” them?! ..
I carefully entered the cave. But nothing unusual happened here either, except that the air became somehow very soft and “joyful” - it smelled of spring and herbs, as if I was in a lush forest clearing, and not inside a bare stone rock... After walking a few meters, I I suddenly realized that it was becoming lighter, although it would seem that it should have been the other way around. The light streamed from somewhere above, here below it was dispersed into a very soft “sunset” lighting. A strange, soothing melody began to sound quietly and unobtrusively in my head - I had never heard anything like it before... The unusual combination of sounds made the world around me light and joyful. And safe...
It was very quiet and very cozy in the strange cave... The only thing that was a little alarming was that the feeling of someone else’s observation was growing stronger and stronger. But it wasn't unpleasant. It’s just a parent’s caring gaze behind an unintelligent baby...
The corridor along which I walked began to expand, turning into a huge high stone hall, along the edges of which there were simple stone seats that looked like long benches that someone had carved right into the rock. And in the middle of this strange hall stood a stone pedestal, on which a huge diamond crystal “burned” with all the colors of the rainbow... It sparkled and shimmered, blinding with multi-colored flashes, and looked like a small sun, for some reason suddenly hidden by someone in a stone cave .
I came closer - the crystal shone brighter. It was very beautiful, but nothing more, and did not evoke any delight or connection to something “great”. The crystal was material, simply incredibly large and magnificent. But that's all. It was not something mystical or significant, but just extraordinarily beautiful. But I still couldn’t understand why this seemingly simple “stone” reacted to the approach of a person? Could it be possible that he was somehow “turned on” by human warmth?
“You’re absolutely right, Isidora...” suddenly a gentle voice was heard. - No wonder the Fathers value you!
Startled in surprise, I turned around, immediately exclaiming joyfully - North was standing next to me! He was still friendly and warm, just a little sad. Like a gentle sun that was suddenly covered by a random cloud...

Something somewhere for some reason can “What? Where? When?" survive your thirtieth birthday
This spring, the management of the TV company “Igra” sat down the program “What? Where? When?" instead of “experts” in politics and entertainment. Many people did not like this - there was talk that the game, which turns 30 this year, had exhausted itself. Crystal Owl owner Mikhail Moon, who is no longer participating in “What?,” talks about his views on the current game and what happened in the past. Where? When?".
- Why did you leave?
- There are several reasons why I stopped playing. Firstly, I am convinced that any player should be able to leave on time and gracefully. A rather strange goal is to sit at the table with a top for as long as possible. I've always wanted to participate in beautiful game, and not remain Koshchei the Immortal. Secondly, the time has come: I played on and off for eight years. This, in my opinion, is enough. And thirdly, 2005 is an anniversary year, the title of master will be awarded. It's a race with a huge prize at the end. Taking part in it without the desire to win is unsporting. And I’m not very interested in playing anymore.
- Why so?
- For most experts, the game is an opportunity for self-realization. Now I am more fulfilled at work. As long as I felt the desire to sit down at the gaming table, then there was a game. But the last one for me is “What? Where? When?" last summer proved that I was never able to tune in. Last time I had this happen when I had to play two days after my dog died. But here a completely different situation arose, when there was simply no internal incentive to play.
- How many times has it happened that a connoisseur left the club, and a few years later returned again.
- It is possible that I will return. Everything can change. I would like to repeat this. After all, the greatest pleasure is taking a question. This is akin to Mendeleev’s joy from opening a table in a dream. I don't really like expert terminology, but there is quite a lot precise definition. When the team is going through versions, suddenly one pops up, and it becomes clear to everyone that this is it; in the club this is called a “click”. The moment of truth. For the sake of this moment, I advise everyone to play “What? Where? When?".
- Is it so easy to get there? How are players selected for the program?
- The right to form teams belongs to the heads of the IGRA television company. Sometimes they listen to the advice of experts, sometimes they act strictly against this advice. I don't know exactly how this happens now. Previously, there was a more or less clear vertical and it was clearer how the selection took place.
- And How?
- Almost immediately after the broadcast aired, regional clubs began to appear across the country. There people played for their own pleasure, without any TV, without money. Then Voroshilov realized that he had provoked a movement of the masses. And the first congress of the International Association of Clubs “What? Where? When?”, the so-called festivals began. They, in turn, replenished the first forge of ChGK personnel - the Brain Ring. It was a very high-quality screening that took place practically in combat conditions. The filming of "Brain" took place in inhumane conditions - four broadcasts a day. The players came to filming every day. They didn't know whether they would be allowed to play today or not, but they had to tune in every round because they could be called to play at any time. Accordingly, it was a terrible psychological stress. By ten to the studio. Two shootings without a break. Then - lunch. Everyone runs to the dining room. There is only one dining room, all three hundred people also have a break at the same time. So we had to run quickly. Back to the studio, two more shoots. Then - the hotel. Half a liter of vodka - to fall asleep, the next day - the same thing again. It was an existential high, and most players really regret that they will never have to experience this again.
-Where did the Brains go?
- “Igra” refused “Brain Ring” because none of the TV channels wants to buy it.
- What is the secret of the longevity of “What?” Where? When?"?
- Voroshilov is a genius. He largely determined the development trends of modern television. What we see now in the show of Larry Flynt and others was invented by Vladimir Yakovlevich long before them.
- Do you like what happens in “What? Where? When?" Now?
- I don’t know what would have happened if “The Game” had not chosen the current vector of development. After the death of Voroshilov, Boris Kryuk and Natalya Stetsenko found themselves in a monstrous situation. It's as if you were handed a Chinese vase from the Ming Dynasty and asked to walk through a littered, dark labyrinth without breaking it because it is priceless. They simply had a colossal responsibility. So no one has the right to criticize what they are doing now.
- But they could refuse this responsibility.
- And ruin everything? I believe that the game is valuable precisely because it lives. It seems to me that what we see today is definitely better care"What? Where? When?" from television. If the program had been closed, it would have been a disgusting monument to Voroshilov. I don’t want and won’t evaluate what Stetsenko and Kryuk did and how they did it, but I’m always on their side. The role of guardians of the game fell on them like the ring on Frodo. This is a huge cross. And the fact that they continue to carry it is great. Whichever direction they turn with this cross.
- Nevertheless, the game has changed a lot, and not for the better...
- I have a feeling that the game has acquired a new format. It became very similar to “Night Watch”, “The Turkish Gambit”, “The Weakest Link” and even a little like “Star Factory”. But I can’t say with certainty that it wasn’t inevitable.
- How did you like the idea of seating TV viewers and stars at the gaming table?
- She seems disgusting to me. You can take a question and experience this catharsis only in a game. It is valuable that during the discussion the team unites into a single organism and becomes something more than a meeting of six players. Because it is capable of not only retrieving old knowledge, but also creating new ones. Voroshilov always emphasized this. Unfortunately, in the current episode I saw all the elements of “What? Where? When?”, with the exception of the game itself. Everything was professional except those sitting at the table. They clearly couldn't get the buzz. Accordingly, they never understood what the real “What? Where? When?".
- Do honored experts occupy any positions in the “Game”?
- The only player who took a post in the television company is Andrei Kozlov. All others do not hold official positions. Voroshilov initially took the following position: never communicate with experts. And that’s right: tomorrow he’s going to drag our faces into the mud, but today he’s having a nice conversation with us.
- Hasn’t it become more boring with the change of host?
- Ironically, Boris Kryuk, under Voroshilov, was engaged in working with experts, communicating with us. Naturally, when he became the host, many tried to embarrass him and even behaved rudely towards him. But in the very first games he proved that this topic would not work. From time to time it pops up, and he again has to dunk someone’s face into it. But by and large, Hook successfully passed Scylla and Charybdis.
- They say that you quarreled with Alexander Druz because he did not allow you to receive two “Crystal Owls”. This is true?
- The truth is that Alexander Abramovich and I don’t like each other. We have a certain mutual antipathy. And the Crystal Owls have nothing to do with it. My friend doesn’t like me, doesn’t like how I play, and he, as a master, doesn’t think I deserve the main prize of the game. This is a completely normal position, and we definitely didn’t quarrel over it. I wouldn't call it a conflict. For example, I don’t like Zyuganov and Khakamada. Maybe they don't like me either. Should I quarrel with them now, or what?
- You still received one “Owl”. Does owning it give you anything?
- It seems to me that some experts I like respect me. Their attitude towards me is much better than the Crystal Owl. That’s also why I left: if I started going downhill, looking pale, just serving my number at the table, I would be ashamed in front of these people.
- Do old players have jealousy towards young ones?
- Are there situations, other than in Soviet films, when old people are happy about their new shift? Put yourself in the place of an old worker who, with his wrench, had been turning the nuts in one direction for fifty years, and then a young specialist came from vocational school and begins to turn them in the other direction. And after his shift, he goes to drink beer, while everyone else goes to drink port. Only the guards forgotten on guard are happy about the arrival of their shift. "What? Where? When?" - a completely normal get-together, in which people who are forced to coexist in the same space unite into interest groups. And I would not divide experts by age. And of course, there is always jealousy towards newcomers. Perhaps even for me.

They live in different cities, each of them has their own job. But the hour comes (and it comes four times a year) - and the experts put on tuxedos, sit down at a round table with a top in the center and begin to solve questions. And after the game they return home again - wait for the next time. But, despite such frequency of appearance on the screen, experts on “What? Where? When?” - real TV stars.

Mikhail Moon is no longer called a “talented young player” or “the brightest expert of the new generation.” He has long been on an equal footing with the grandees of the famous TV quiz show - Potashev, Druz, Dvinyatin. We met with Mikhail in the office of an investment company, where he works as a trader in the beautiful name“Department of Mergers and Acquisitions,” and asked him to answer questions not from TV viewers, but from our newspaper.

Trader

Mikhail, as I understand it, you also make money here with your own mind?

Yes, with the mind and tongue (laughs). I work in the stock market - one of the few places where a person’s intelligence and abilities are converted into money without the use of any additional tools.

So what are you doing?

Everything is very simple. I buy and sell stocks based on clients' orders. Or I help them buy and sell.

Are there elements of play and excitement in your work?

Certainly. An organic element of our profession is the concept of “risk”. Risk is inevitable, it must be taken into account and taken into account. And where there is risk, there is play. After all, no forecast is one hundred percent. Just like any version in the game.

Does your TV popularity interfere with your life and work?

I am phlegmatic and an introvert by nature, and I feel uncomfortable when people come up on the street and start saying something. But at work it helps. When I meet a client, and he already knows me by “What? Where? When?”, the working relationship develops faster.

Connoisseur

What was the connoisseur's childhood like? You probably read smart books all the time?

My childhood was very ordinary. But I really learned to read early. We had books at home with all kinds of puzzles and logical problems, I really liked them. Yes, even when I was five years old, I watched “What? Where? When?” and I had a firm conviction that this was mine, that I would definitely play. Then this feeling was forgotten.

When did it return?

In my first year, when I started playing. What is shown on television is actually the tip of the iceberg. There is a whole movement “What? Where? When?”, in which thousands of experts participate. Russian and world championships are held. And the television version is a cruel game: many worthy people and little space. But I was lucky - I passed the selection successfully, and played well for the first time on TV. This was in the winter of 1997.

How many correct answers did you give then?

No one. But the number of responses is not the most important indicator. Any hypothesis or even half-hypotheses expressed during a team discussion can lead to the correct version. We call it passing - like in football. The merit of the one who passes is no less than the one who gives the answer.

What is needed to “take” a question?

A very important factor is experience. In internal structure many questions are similar, the number of types is limited. How more people plays, the more often he subsequently gives the correct answer. In most issues of the television "ChGK" logic is rarely applicable; subtle associative connections must work there. Why sometimes a strong team loses, and an unknown one wins? Because logic and knowledge are not enough. Something else is needed.

Insight? By the way, where does it come from?

Insight is the brain's reaction to a certain stimulus. The irritant can be anything - a team discussion, a presenter asking a question, or the words of the captain: “Mikhail Moon answers.” An associative chain starts, it quickly unwinds, and you understand what’s going on. It often happens that at the moment of discussion you already have the answer in your subconscious, and the main thing is to get to it.

How do you prepare for the game?

I try to get as much sleep as possible and limit myself from sensory sensations. I usually sit in a hotel room, if I watch TV, then video clips with the sound muted, if I read, then something relaxing. I'm saving up energy.

Behind the Scenes

After Voroshilov's death, many thought that the game would end there. Nevertheless, Boris Kryuk became the presenter:

And "What? Where? When?" became his full-fledged author's program. Under Hook, the game remained alive and did not become a clone of previous games. Recently I was rewatching old games - then the program lasted more than two hours! But then it was appropriate, such was the rhythm of life. Voroshilov was a great man. He subtly felt the nerve of the era, and at one time he realized that it was no longer possible to play with books - it would be false.

And the experts began to play for money. And then they stopped again.

Because they play for money in many games, and they play only because of it. And it's great that Hook decided against it.

It feels like the questions have gotten worse, there’s more “knowledge involved.”

I don't agree. Any question can be answered. Except for questions from the 13th sector. But this is an element of randomness that is normal in the game. Like in football: one team plays with the wind, the other against the wind.

Mikhail, what kind of cat ran between you and Alexander Druz?

Well: (smiles and is silent for a very long time.) What can I say here?.. Maybe this is a factor of one city? It is no coincidence that the most bitter rivals are Milan and Inter, Roma and Lazio. But there is no war between us. If we need to play on the same team, we’ll sit down and play. When we meet, we greet each other and shake hands. Someone may not like someone - that's normal.

So you won't tell me?

- (Smiles again and is silent.) But I can’t say that this is some kind of serious conflict. There were no scandals, we do not harm each other on the sly. These conversations started after they wanted to award me the “Owl” twice, and Sasha vetoed it - but that’s his right. I respect other people's opinions.

Player

I already realized that you are partial to football:

Yes, I really love football. I believe - and I think with good reason - that I have a good understanding of football. I even consider myself a football analyst. I understand what is happening on the field, who is running where and why they are running there.

I'm afraid many people think the same as you.

But this is confirmed for me by the fact that I play on a bookmaker and quite successfully.

So you also play on betting?! And what else?

At university I played a lot of cards and preference.

And also successful?

Yes. Almost always won. But I am not a gambling person, rather a pragmatic one. If I was losing, I wouldn't play. When I start doing something, I have an incentive to do it professionally. I am not pleased that I win money (especially since I bet very little), I am pleased with the fact itself - I am a professional, I understand this, and winning is an objective indicator of this.

Boris Kryuk about Mikhail Moon (from an interview with Ogonyok magazine):

":For "What? Where? When?" the optimal question is considered to be a question to which an expert does not know the answer, but by comparing his knowledge and feelings in a minute he finds this answer. I think that in this sense Mikhail Moon is simply a phenomenal player. I think he would lose in “His Game.” In knowledge, he could not compete. But in solving questions, Moon is one of the best."

An excerpt characterizing Moon, Mikhail Valerievich

“Many people are pleased with your mercy, but we don’t have to take the master’s bread,” said a voice from behind.
- Why not? - said the princess.
No one answered, and Princess Marya, looking around the crowd, noticed that now all the eyes she met immediately dropped.
- Why don’t you want to? – she asked again.
Nobody answered.
Princess Marya felt heavy from this silence; she tried to catch someone's gaze.
- Why don’t you talk? - the princess turned to the old man, who, leaning on a stick, stood in front of her. - Tell me if you think anything else is needed. “I’ll do everything,” she said, catching his gaze. But he, as if angry at this, lowered his head completely and said:
- Why agree, we don’t need bread.
- Well, should we give it all up? Do not agree. We don’t agree... We don’t agree. We feel sorry for you, but we do not agree. Go on your own, alone...” was heard in the crowd from different directions. And again the same expression appeared on all the faces of this crowd, and now it was probably no longer an expression of curiosity and gratitude, but an expression of embittered determination.
“You didn’t understand, right,” said Princess Marya with a sad smile. - Why don’t you want to go? I promise to house you and feed you. And here the enemy will ruin you...
But her voice was drowned out by the voices of the crowd.
“We don’t have our consent, let him ruin it!” We don’t take your bread, we don’t have our consent!
Princess Marya again tried to catch someone's gaze from the crowd, but not a single glance was directed at her; the eyes obviously avoided her. She felt strange and awkward.
- See, she taught me cleverly, follow her to the fortress! Destroy your home and go into bondage and go. Why! I'll give you the bread, they say! – voices were heard in the crowd.
Princess Marya, lowering her head, left the circle and went into the house. Having repeated the order to Drona that there should be horses for departure tomorrow, she went to her room and was left alone with her thoughts.

For a long time that night, Princess Marya sat at the open window in her room, listening to the sounds of men talking coming from the village, but she did not think about them. She felt that no matter how much she thought about them, she could not understand them. She kept thinking about one thing - about her grief, which now, after the break caused by worries about the present, had already become past for her. She could now remember, she could cry and she could pray. As the sun set, the wind died down. The night was quiet and fresh. At twelve o'clock the voices began to fade, the rooster crowed, and people began to emerge from behind the linden trees. full moon, a fresh, white mist of dew rose, and silence reigned over the village and over the house.
One after another, pictures of the close past appeared to her - illness and her father’s last minutes. And with sad joy she now dwelled on these images, driving away from herself with horror only one last image of his death, which - she felt - she was unable to contemplate even in her imagination at this quiet and mysterious hour of the night. And these pictures appeared to her with such clarity and with such detail that they seemed to her now like reality, now the past, now the future.
Then she vividly imagined that moment when he had a stroke and was dragged out of the garden in the Bald Mountains by the arms and he muttered something with an impotent tongue, twitched his gray eyebrows and looked at her restlessly and timidly.
“Even then he wanted to tell me what he told me on the day of his death,” she thought. “He always meant what he told me.” And so she remembered in all its details that night in Bald Mountains on the eve of the blow that happened to him, when Princess Marya, sensing trouble, remained with him against his will. She did not sleep and at night she tiptoed downstairs and, going up to the door to the flower shop where her father spent the night that night, listened to his voice. He said something to Tikhon in an exhausted, tired voice. He obviously wanted to talk. “And why didn’t he call me? Why didn’t he allow me to be here in Tikhon’s place? - Princess Marya thought then and now. “He will never tell anyone now everything that was in his soul.” This moment will never return for him and for me, when he would say everything he wanted to say, and I, and not Tikhon, would listen and understand him. Why didn’t I enter the room then? - she thought. “Maybe he would have told me then what he said on the day of his death.” Even then, in a conversation with Tikhon, he asked about me twice. He wanted to see me, but I stood here, outside the door. He was sad, it was hard to talk with Tikhon, who did not understand him. I remember how he spoke to him about Lisa, as if she were alive - he forgot that she died, and Tikhon reminded him that she was no longer there, and he shouted: “Fool.” It was hard for him. I heard from behind the door how he lay down on the bed, groaning, and shouted loudly: “My God! Why didn’t I get up then?” What would he do to me? What would I have to lose? And maybe then he would have been consoled, he would have said this word to me.” And Princess Marya said out loud the kind word that he said to her on the day of his death. “Darling! - Princess Marya repeated this word and began to sob with tears that relieved her soul. She now saw his face in front of her. And not the face that she had known since she could remember, and which she had always seen from afar; and that face is timid and weak, which on the last day, bending down to his mouth to hear what he said, she examined up close for the first time with all its wrinkles and details.
