He was one of the most active participants in the Restoration of Kenmu (1333-1336), was appointed governor of the province of Kawati. In 1336, at the Battle of Minatogawa, near what is now Kobe, Masashige's troops clashed with the Ashikaga army. After many hours of battle, military happiness began to lean towards Ashikaga. Then, leaving the battle, Masashige and his brother Masasue committed suicide, the brothers pierced each other with swords. Their example was followed by more than seventy relatives and servants. Kusunoki Masashige went down in history as a symbol of unbreakable devotion to the imperial family and military talent.
