Confederation of Independent Systems. Something About Separatist Military Vehicles - Jedi Council Gizor Dellso's Rebellion

Confederation of Independent Systems

Emblem of the Confederation

Confederation of Independent Systems (CNS), also known as Confederation or Separatists, is a fictional state from the Star Wars universe, formed by several planets and sectors, as well as corporations that announced their intention to secede from the Galactic Republic as a result of the Separatist Crisis during the Clone Wars.

Story

The birth of the separatist movement

In the decades leading up to the Clone Wars, the Republic was seen by many as a useless state, plagued by corruption and mindless bureaucracy that stifled the votes represented in the Galactic Senate. Separatist sentiment began to rise after the Battle of Naboo, and the mercantile guilds became disillusioned with the Republic after a law was passed to tax all trade routes to outlying star systems.

In this critical situation, Count Dooku, a former Jedi Master who had become disillusioned with the Republic and the Jedi Order, to whom he devoted most of his life, entered the scene. His authority figure fueled anti-republican sentiment across many worlds, paving the way for rebellion against the state. A voluntary alliance of separatists, led by Dooku, has formed, demanding that the stagnant Republic be replaced by a new state. This movement then evolved into the Confederacy of Independent Systems, a state formally opposed to the Galactic Republic.

Although the Republic did not deny that many of its worlds were in rebellion, it refused to formally acknowledge the existence of the CIS as a uniting state, believing that such a move would make rebellion legal.

clone wars

The Confederacy was preparing military forces to one day use them to overthrow the Republic and capture its capital, the planet Coruscant. Directed by the Republic to reduce the size of the Droid Army after the Naboo Incident, the Trade Federation instead secretly increased their numbers by adding their own battle droids to the Separatists' arsenal. Separatist forces grew steadily thanks to the contributions of various factions, such as the Techno Union. Factories at Geonosis, Hypori, and elsewhere were building billions of droids ready to fight for the Separatists, while Dooku continued to recruit more and more star systems to his banner.

Battle of Geonosis

However, the CIS soon lost the advantage of surprise until Obi-Wan Kenobi, while pursuing the mercenary Jango Fett to Geonosis, discovered the presence of the Confederates on the planet and informed Anakin Skywalker and Supreme Chancellor Palpatine of this. While sending the message, Obi-Wan was attacked by droideks, forcing Anakin and Padmé Amidala to go to his rescue. Upon arriving on Geonosis, the failed rescuers were caught in one of the Geonosian droid factories and sentenced to execution in the arena.

But during the execution, Mace Windu and the Jedi army showed up, battling the Geonosians and battle droids. The sheer numerical superiority of the droids played its part, and soon there were just over a dozen Jedi left.

Luckily for the survivors, Master Yoda came to the rescue of the Jedi along with a group of SNDK/p gunboats. Republic forces attacked Geonosis and the Clone Wars began. The CNS was knocked out of Geonosis, but this no longer had significant consequences.

For the next three years, the Republic and the KNS waged a bloody war with numerous casualties on both sides. It remained a secret to everyone that this war was part of Darth Sidious's plan, the purpose of which was to seize power in the Galaxy by the Sith.

End of Confederation

Separatist Council on Utapau in 19 BBY, after Dooku's death

The Confederacy of Independent Systems was eventually defeated, though it was not its final defeat. Suffering significant casualties in both defeat and victory, despite the might of General Grievous and considerable outnumbering, the droids often fell short of Republic forces. But given that Darth Sidious manipulated the CIS, sometimes personally arranging both defeats and victories for them, the Separatists lost before they even started fighting: Sidious needed a victory his Republic. By the end of the war, Count Dooku was defeated by Anakin Skywalker aboard the Invisible Hand, General Grievous was killed on Utapau by Obi-Wan Kenobi, the Separatist Council was destroyed by Darth Vader on Mustafar, and the commercial guilds quietly sunk into oblivion.

Since both sides were controlled by the Sith, the Confederacy also laid the foundations for the Galactic Empire, which inherited the Death Star project from the CIS, which later became the Empire's terrifying superweapon.

Effects

The corporations that made up the Confederation were subsequently imperialized and incorporated into the military-industrial complex of the Empire. Separatist worlds became part of the Empire, and many known races of the Confederacy, such as the Geonosians, became slaves. Most of the droids were turned off because they were inferior to the clone stormtroopers and their Imperial counterparts in combat qualities. In addition, the Empire brought to life the project of Confederate military scientists - the "Death Star".

The memory of the Confederacy has endured for centuries. The Wookiees used old droid parts while fighting the Imperial forces. In the same battle, old CIS ships helped a Jedi escape. An active contingent of B1 battle droids remained on Geonosis, though it was destroyed by a stormtrooper squad along with Wedge Antilles, who crash-landed on the planet. Even after the collapse of the Empire, droidekas were used by smugglers, as well as by some races, such as the Vaagari.

Former Confederates

Rise of Gizor Dellso

Eight years after the Clone Wars, in 11 BBY, Geonosian member of the Separatist Council Gizor Dellso, who managed to escape death along with Separatist leaders at the end of the war, began to implement a plan to restore the Confederacy. He set up a factory on Mustafar and started building a new army. His intentions were to start a new war, taking advantage of the precarious position of the newly created Galactic Empire. First, Dellso concentrated a fleet of droids around Mustafar to protect his factory, then he created a prototype of a new battle droid, which, like the B2 super battle droid, had armor.

While the droid soldiers guarded the factory, the Imperial fleet, carrying 501 Legions, arrived at Mustafar. A heavy missile platform infiltrated the hangar of an Imperator-class Star Destroyer, after which several super battle droids appeared and attacked the stormtroopers in the hangar. However, with the help of thermal detonators, rocket launchers and timed bombs, the Imperial fighters destroyed the enemy ship. The Empire then attacked and destroyed the weak Separatist fleet and proceeded to land on the planet's surface. The Battle for Mustafar began, which the outdated droids had no chance of winning, and Gizor Dellso did not have time to create a new army. Dellso and his Geonosian retinue died, at the same time burying hopes for a new war. The droid factory was destroyed by an orbital bombardment.

State and politics

At the head of the Confederation was the sole leader, followed by the Separatist Council. The official leader of the Confederacy was Count Dooku, Sidious' second apprentice and former Jedi Master. Positioned between the Head of State and the Separatist Council in importance, the Supreme Commander of the Droid Army was not directly involved in the government of the state, but became the leader of the Separatists in the event of the Head of State's incapacity. In fact, the real power in the Confederacy was the Sith Lord Darth Sidious, whose influence only a few knew.

The task of the Confederation was to separate from the Republic and form its own state. The reason was the belief that the Republic had become too corrupt. Members of the Confederation were called "separatists". Disagreements between the Republic and the Separatists eventually led to the Clone Wars.

Military establishment

The military forces of the Confederacy of Independent Systems - also known as the Droid Army or the Separatist Droid Army - consisted of a large number of combat vehicles, battle droids, organic forces, and various military units.

The CIS was largely controlled by big businessmen such as Trade Federation Viceroy Nute Gunray, Chairman of the San Hill Banking Clan, and Techno Union Chief Wat Tambor. They were not warriors or generals, but merchants, more interested in profit than in battle, and as a result, they were not adapted to command troops on the battlefield. Of the entire political establishment, only Count Dooku, Poggle the Lesser, and Nute Gunray had any experience of warfare. However, there was a conviction among them that superior numbers and the latest design of droids would ensure their victory in the Clone Wars. In a sense, they were right, as the droidekas were good enough to deal with the Jedi, and by outnumbering the Jedi many times over, the CNS won many battles. However, the uselessness of some droids, such as the B1 battle droid, was the cause of many defeats.

The army consisted mostly of droids and was often referred to as the Droid Army. Various commercial organizations rallied under the Confederate flag, contributing their own troops to the Separatist Army and gaining an extensive droid force. The lineup was represented by both Trade Federation battle droids and security forces from the Commerce Guild, the Banking Clan, and the Corporate Alliance.

One of the largest groups was provided by the Techno Union, which not only provided ready-made B2 super battle droids, but also launched the production of additional batches at their enterprises.

The rest of the allies were not slow to offer their help. The Confederacy controlled countless worlds throughout the galaxy and was able to attach many local militia to its army. Nimbus Warriors from Jabiima led by Alto Stratus, the Quarren Isolation League, the Mandalorian Defenders, Separatist commandos, and many others assisted the CIS and fought the Galactic Republic. Many of these troops were not droids, but sentient beings. While primarily a droid army, the Separatist Army also included organic creatures. The Gossam Commandos, Corporate Alliance Soldiers, and other warriors used their own tactics in the battle. Unlike the droids, these soldiers had independent minds and were able to effectively counter even Republican clone troopers.

Between organics and automatics - literally - there was one being: General Grievous, Supreme Commander of the Droid Army. A semi-cyborg with a brilliant tactical mind and a powerful armored hull that covered the remains of his body, Grievous fought for the glory of the Confederacy. He led his forces to many victories across the galaxy, including the subjugation of Duro and the destruction of Humbarin, attacks on strategically important Loyalist worlds, and a swift assault on Coruscant. He also pursued Jedi Knights who were causing serious problems for the Droid Army and killed many of them in duels. The power of Grievous over the troops was absolute, each of his orders was carried out with a half-word. One thing that made his fighting style unique and gave him an edge over his opponents was the use of lightsabers. With this ability, he could crush anyone who stood in the way that led to countless CIU victories.

The separatist army did not consist exclusively of single warriors. During the Clone Wars, a lot of military equipment appeared. Common combatants included the Commerce Guild's OG-9 rocket-powered spiderbots, HP-H99 Pursuit-class droid tanks, Manta starfighter droids, and Trade Federation AAT assault tanks. Even more massive machines were used: the protodeck, the seismic tank, and the Dark Reaper.

Astrography

The territory of the Confederacy of Independent Systems has varied considerably in size throughout its short history. By 22 BBY, the Confederacy included ten thousand star systems, as well as many commercial organizations.

Behind the scenes

  • The name of the enemy of the Republic - "Confederacy" - and the name of the Republican military - "Grand Army of the Republic" - are no doubt borrowed from the history of the American Civil War, when the union of the southern states and the army of the North bore the same names. These parallels may have a deeper meaning, perhaps among the characters: some fans believe that George Lucas is comparing Palpatine to US President Abraham Lincoln.

Battle droid army- troops of the CNS (Confederation of Independent Systems). Unlike clones of the Republic, droids are not creative thinkers, and as a result, they are unable to perceive the experience gained in battle. Their production costs a lot of money, but this is offset by the speed of construction. Comparing the two armies, KNF droids are not as effective as Republic clones, but are much cheaper (compared to the latter) and there are more of them. Droids are divided into several "species":

1. Battle droidsB1 - the main forces of the CIS, cheaper than super battle droids, but less effective than the latter. The droid has no brain, and it fits a little more in its head than in a large and sensitive receiving device. It is thanks to him that the droid receives commands from the Droid Control Station. Small processors are responsible for the movements and some of the sensory data they transmit to the central computer. The voice generator allows the droid to speak in a monotonous mechanical voice. There are several B1 droids:

1-1. B1 no difference - beige- standard battle droid. Armed with a rifle, a pistol, and a thermal detonator.

1-2. B1 with blue circles- A mechanic droid whose main task is the maintenance of equipment and its piloting.

1-3. B1 with green circles - landing.

1-4. B1 with yellow marks - commanding squad.

1-5. B1 with red stripes on the shoulders and chest - security droid. Protects various KNS facilities.

In addition to improved armor, which could successfully withstand most standard clone blasters, saboteur droids have improved artificial intelligence that is independent of the control station and can think creatively and analyze the situation on the battlefield. The voice generator of these droids allows you to play different tones of sounds, creating different voices of many species and races, as well as clones. However, their vocabulary is too small and specific, so that they can be quickly exposed. The armament of the rank and file was a rifle and vibroswords. In addition, saboteur droids possess not only ranged and melee weapons, but also have skills in hand-to-hand combat. Thanks to their movable limbs, their strikes are precise and deadly. The only drawback of these droids was their high price, so during the Clone Wars they were used only in special operations. Their "ancestor" was the B1 battle droids.

5. Droidek (Destroyer Droid)- A combat type of droid used by the Trade Federation and the CIS. Droidekas, during the Clone Wars, gained a reputation for being deadly creatures that even the Jedi feared. They were valued for their versatility and firepower. Destroyer droids saw action in many battles of the Clone Wars, usually in small squads, and also served as security guards in various Separatist installations. The droideks outperformed the B1 battle droids in several ways. They could fold into a cylindrical shape, resembling a wheel, and due to this, move quickly. When faced with danger, the droids deployed into a three-legged structure, equipped with two twin blasters and usually a shield generator that could deflect or absorb any kind of energy blast, up to light cannon blasts, as well as counteract lightsaber attacks. In addition, the effectiveness of the Destroyer Droids was provided by an extended range of vision sensors that were not affected by tricks with light. Despite formidable equipment, Droidek had a significant drawback: his shield was designed to protect in an upright position. If the droid fell on its side or hit a wall,

Ahsoka and Anakin fend off the droideka attack

the defenses couldn't distinguish the obstacles from lightsaber strikes or blaster shots. Because of this, the generator continued to power the shield and burned out, leaving the robot vulnerable. A burned out generator left the Destroyer defenseless. Also, the Protective Field was not included in the wheel configuration. Droidek had difficulty moving down inclines and up stairs. To do this, he had to unfold and begin the descent or ascent, which made it difficult to coordinate his legs.

This droid's weapon was a special electric staff made from Freak, a material that can resist a lightsaber. MagnaGuard could also use the B1 droid rocket launcher or rifle. They were known to be formidable assassins, capable of taking down both clones of the Republic and the Jedi themselves with ease. The magnadroid was one of the most dangerous droids in the Confederacy. They were used as a guard for the Separatist leaders from the Jedi. Their staves didn't deflect blaster shots, so they were useless in a big fight.

7. Droid Octuptarra- actively used during the Clone Wars by the Techno Union and the CIS. Three-legged spider-like automata had a large spherical head mounted on a thin body. Below the head, laser cannons were mounted. The droid's standard armament consisted of three laser turrets, evenly spaced on each side, below the photoreceptors. The height of the droid, moving on three zigzag, divided supports, was 3.6 meters. The droid was nearly impossible to approach unnoticed, as the photoreceptors located on different sides gave a panoramic view of the area, and the articulated rotating block allowed them to immediately open fire in case of a sudden collision with the enemy, which made them a difficult and dangerous target. The Octuptarr droid was most effective at a distance, as its armament and growth allows it to fire at long ranges, but if the enemy got close, the droid became vulnerable, since the weaponry did not allow close fire, and the large head was poorly protected from dense fire from side of the enemy.

ORP
The term comes from STAP - Single Trooper Aerial Platform

"We could be hiding in the woods forever if it wasn't for those damned OVPs. They've been stalking us through the trees like gungans looking for gumballs."
— Tobias Poll, Naboo Royal Guard Officer

Single aerial platform, also known as ORP-1 or simply ORP is a nimble flying machine designed for use by B1 battle droids of the Trade Federation and the Confederacy of Independent Systems.

They are similar in design to personal repulsor lifts, which are used for both military and civilian purposes. The only weapon mounted on fast-moving AWPs is the twin blaster launcher. The power source is high-voltage batteries.

Chameleon Droid
Chameleon Droid

"Come out, come out, cunning droids. You can't hide from my eyes."
- Yoda

Speleological Scout Droid, also known as chameleon droid was a cloaked mining droid used by the Guild of Commerce and later by the Confederacy of Independent Systems during the . They were used on many fronts, including on Ilum and Felucia.

The Guild of Commerce has established several mines on many harsh planets. To start mining mineral resources, the Guild sent scout dreads in hyperspace pods. Chameleon droids were equipped with a variety of sophisticated sensors that could detect valuable ores. These nimble droids studied the geological data of future mining operations, and began blasting to prepare the site for the arrival of larger teams of miners.

The corporate giants, united under the formal leadership of the Confederacy of Independent Systems, brought with them industrial equipment that could be converted for military use. The Arakid model of the spelunking scout droid was extensively redesigned by the Techno Union engineers to become a chameleon droid, a mining droid in disguise used by the Separatists for acts of sabotage.

The chameleon droid gets its name from its use of holography to project an image of its environment onto itself, making it virtually invisible. While not actually a cloaking device, it is effective against passive sensors. The droid's cylindrical body houses a small repulsor lifter. It does not use engines, which reduces the overall weight of the droid, increasing its ability to move using four articulated clawed manipulators. The manipulators can create a magnetic field, allowing the droid to attach itself to smooth and sloping surfaces. These droids can even move on walls and ceilings.

The droid's mineralogical sensors have been replaced with laser cannons. Its cargo hold, where mining explosives were stored, was left unchanged, only the low-yield explosives were replaced with live mines.

As a result of an order given to the Separatist Council by a new student, these devices were deactivated.

Dwarf Spider Droid
dwarf spider droid

"You fought against him, you know his weaknesses, and more importantly, you know how he can kill. Guys, meet the new additions to the stormtrooper corps."
- TK-342 before the battle on Gorman

Pygmy Spider Droid KDP-1, also known as the drilling spider droid as it was originally used to destroy obstacles in the narrow passages of mining mines, is a battle droid manufactured by the Commerce Guild for the Separatist army.

Characteristics

The functions of this droid are similar to those of a conventional combat vehicle. It was also used to sanction clients who refused to pay their Guild of Commerce debts on time.

The droid's primary weapon is a blaster cannon mounted on its "face" like a nose. Its small size and four legs, capable of moving on any surface, make it suitable for use in dangerous mines. However, due to the fact that his laser cannon is fixed in one position, he cannot deploy it to track the enemy, and thus is not well suited to taking out fast moving targets. The length of the cannon can sometimes interfere with him if space is limited - he took advantage of this weak point on Escart (This is told in the book "The Labyrinth of Evil" - approx. transl.).

The droid is able to communicate in a language of audio signals similar to a binary language.

Story

IG-227 Hailfire Droid Tank
hailfire-class droid tank

"Proceeding to seize the planet for non-payment."
- Horgo Shive, Army Commander of the Intergalactic Banking Clan

The IG-227 hailfire droid tank, also known as the wheeled droid, was a combat vehicle built by Haor Chall Engineering for the Intergalactic Banking Clan prior to and during the Clone Wars.

Characteristic

The Hailfire Droid Tank is a mobile, intelligent missile platform with firepower capable of completely destroying small enemy infantry units. It rides on two large wheels flanked by an armored control module, allowing it to operate on virtually any surface.

The main armament of tanks of the "hail of fire" type are rocket launchers located on both sides of their "head". Each launch array carries 15 homing missiles, powerful enough that an accurate hit from such a missile is enough to destroy a Republic walker.

Each hailfire droid also has a retractable twin blaster cannon for use against infantry and other unarmoured targets.

Story

Prior to the Clone Wars, hailfire droids were used by the so-called "Security and Recovery Division" of the Intergalactic Banking Clan to sanction clients who failed to pay their debts on time.

The first use of hailfire droids by the Confederacy of Independent Systems army was during the Battle of Geonosis, where they destroyed or disabled a large number of AT-TEs, as well as a very significant number of clone troopers, before they themselves were destroyed by fire. assault ships. During the war, many "fire hails" of various types and models continued to fight against the army of the Galactic Republic.
After the destruction of the Separatist Council by a new student, these modules were deactivated.

The Wookiees reactivated several "hailfires" and used them against Imperial landing parties during the Empire's enslavement of the planet in 19 BBY.

Behind the scenes

In Attack of the Clones, Confederate missiles, including hailfire droids, can be identified by their trail of black smoke, while Republic missiles have a white trail.

The hailfire droid had a real-world prototype, the Russian Tsar Tank, created in 1914. It had a similar appearance - two large, hoop-like wheels and a third, smaller, swivel wheel in the middle; guns mounted in the central gun turret. However, the tank never made it past the prototype stage, as it was deemed too bulky and vulnerable to enemy fire.

seismic tank
seismic tank

seismic tank, or self-propelled seismic shock installation- a giant repulsor-powered fighting vehicle, the main armament is an installation for creating a powerful shock wave. Moving low above the surface of the planet, the tank pushes down a huge piston, creating a shock wave that causes significant damage to enemy troops.

A seismic tank was used by the Confederacy of Independent Systems at the Battle of Dantooine, but was disabled by a Jedi Master who confronted it alone. (This is covered in The Clone Wars Animated Series 12-13).

Due to the fact that this machine had a huge weight and low speed, it became an easy target for enemy artillery and assault ships. Therefore, the seismic tank did not play a significant role in the war, and was not used during the main battles of the Clone Wars.

When Darth Vader destroyed the Separatist Council, the remaining instances were most likely deactivated.
