rat hedgehogs (Echinosoricinae)

a subfamily of mammals of the hedgehog family of the insectivore order. Body length 10-45 cm, tail 1.5-20 cm, weigh from 50 G up to 1.5 kg. In appearance, they resemble voles or rats; the tail is bare. The fur is thick, coarse or soft, without needles. 4 genera, each with one species. Distributed in Burma, China, Indochina, the Malay Archipelago, the Philippines. They live in mountain moist forests with dense undergrowth, along the overgrown banks of streams and swamps. They settle under the roots of trees, in crevices of rocks, in dense bushes. They feed on insects, invertebrates, and are partly herbivorous. A typical representative is Gimnura.
