Story

In 1910, by order of Emperor Nicholas II Russian empire purchased several aircraft from France to create its own Air Fleet. After which, the training of officers who could fly airplanes immediately began in Sevastopol. Already by the beginning of the First World War, Russia had an air fleet of 263 aircraft, which was the first indicator among all countries participating in the global massacre. The planes were used exclusively to correct artillery fire. But soon air battles broke out in the blue heights, and the sky began to bring death in the form of bombs, which generously began to rain down on the heads of the soldiers in the trenches. Of the Russian pilots, the most famous is Pyotr Nesterov, who was the first to perform the famous “loop” in 1913 and the first to perform an aerial ram in 1914.

In 1917, the Imperial Air Fleet ceased to exist as a result of the Great October revolution. Many pilots who had invaluable experience conducting air battles, died or immigrated. In 1918, the Workers' and Peasants' Red Air Fleet was created in the young socialist state. The country's industry developed, and its scientific and technical potential grew. Therefore, it is not surprising that by 1917 the country, which had only 700 aircraft in its armed forces, which made it extremely vulnerable from the air, was already in the 1930s able to become a leader in the aircraft industry and create a powerful military aviation. The design bureaus of Tupolev and Polikarpov were able to establish mass release TB-1, TB-3 bombers and I-15, I-16 fighters. In the USSR, pilot training began to be treated more competently, creating flying clubs and flight schools throughout the country, the graduates of which joined the ranks of the armed forces, Osoaviakhim, the Civil Air Fleet or were sent to the reserves.

Our pilots gained their first combat experience in Spain, where from 1936 to 1939 they fulfilled their international duty. During Civil War in Spain, our pilots on domestic aircraft successfully operated against German aces flying the latest Messerschmitts. Later, successes in the sky during the war with Finland, whose air force was much weaker, turned his head Soviet command. But as the first years of armed confrontation with Hitler's Germany, the USSR was significantly inferior in technical equipment, as well as in pilot training. After World War II, relations with former allies in the anti-Hitler coalition began to rapidly heat up. The United States and its allies began to develop plans directed against the country of the Soviets. The response was to build up the military potential of the USSR, including the modernization of the Air Force. During modernization, huge amounts of money from the country's budget were spent on the development of modern aircraft, which were supposed to create an advantage in the air over enemy aircraft, as well as ensure the implementation of tasks to deliver an adequate strike on important economic and military targets of the enemy, his troop groups. After the USSR ceased to exist, 40% of the entire fleet of equipment went to the Russian Federation. 65% personnel remained to serve in units of the Russian Air Force. In 2009–2010, a transition was made to a two-level air force command system, as a result of which the number of formations was reduced from 8 to 6, and air defense formations were reorganized into 11 aerospace defense brigades. The air regiments were consolidated into air bases with a total number of about 70, including 25 tactical (front-line) air bases, of which 14 are purely fighter.

In 2014, reform of the Air Force structure continued: air defense forces and assets were concentrated in air defense divisions, and the formation of air divisions and regiments began in aviation. An Air Force and Air Defense Army is being created as part of the United Strategic Command North.

The most fundamental transformation is expected in 2015: the creation of a new type - the Aerospace Forces based on the integration of the forces and assets of the Air Force (aviation and air defense) and the Aerospace Defense Forces (space forces, air defense and missile defense).

Simultaneously with the reorganization, an active renewal of the aviation fleet is taking place. Next, all types of aircraft in the Air Force of the Russian Federation, as well as promising aircraft, are considered. The first part of the article covers long-range (strategic) and operational-tactical (front-line) aviation, the second part covers military transport, reconnaissance, special and army aviation.

Long-range (strategic) aviation

Long-range aviation is a means of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Armed Forces and is intended to solve strategic, operational-strategic and operational tasks in theaters of military operations (strategic directions). Tu-160

Work on a new multi-mode strategic intercontinental bomber began in the USSR in 1967. Having tried a variety of layout options, the designers eventually came to the design of an integral low-wing aircraft with a variable-sweep wing with four engines installed in pairs in engine nacelles under the fuselage.

In 1984, the Tu-160 was launched in mass production at the Kazan Aviation Plant. At the time of the collapse of the USSR, 35 aircraft were produced (of which 8 were prototypes); by 1994, KAPO transferred six more Tu-160 bombers to the Russian Air Force, which were stationed near Engels in the Saratov region. In 2002, the Ministry of Defense entered into an agreement with KAPO for the modernization of the Tu-160 with the goal of gradually repairing and modernizing all bombers of this type in service. Tu‑95MS

The creation of the aircraft was started by the design bureau headed by Andrei Tupolev back in the 1950s. At the end of 1951, the developed project was approved, and then the model built by that time was approved and approved. Construction of the first two aircraft began at Moscow Aviation Plant No. 156, and already in the fall of 1952 the prototype made its first flight.

In 2008, funding for R&D was opened in Russia to create a promising long-range aviation complex, the PAK DA. The program envisages the development of a fifth-generation long-range bomber to replace the aircraft in service with the Russian Air Force. MiG-29

The fourth-generation light front-line fighter MiG-29 was developed in the USSR and has been mass-produced since 1983. In fact he was one of the best fighters of its class in the world and, having a very successful design, was repeatedly modernized and, in the form of the latest modifications, entered the 21st century as a multi-purpose aircraft as part of the Russian Air Force. Initially intended to gain air superiority at tactical depth. In the west it is known as "Fulcrum".

By the time of the collapse of the USSR, about 1,400 vehicles of various variants were produced at factories in Moscow and Nizhny Novgorod. Now the MiG-29, in various versions, is in service with the armies of more than two dozen countries near and far abroad, where it has taken part in local wars and armed conflicts.

The Russian Air Force currently operates 184 MiG-29 fighters of the following modifications:

For the most part, all older MiG-29 aircraft are physically outdated and it was decided not to repair or modernize them, but to purchase them instead new technology- MiG-29 SMT (a contract for the supply of 16 aircraft was signed in 2014) and MiG-29UBT, as well as promising MiG-35 fighters.

The new Russian multi-role fighter of the 4++ generation MiG-35 is a deep modernization of the MiG-29 M series aircraft, developed at the MiG Design Bureau. By design, it is maximally unified with early production aircraft, but at the same time has an increased combat load and flight range, reduced radar signature, is equipped with a radar with an active phased array antenna, the latest electronics, on-board electronic warfare complex, has an open avionics architecture and the ability to refuel in the air. Su-27

The Su-27 front-line fighter is a fourth-generation aircraft developed in the USSR at the Sukhoi Design Bureau in the early 1980s. It was intended to gain air superiority and was at one time one of the best fighters in its class. The latest modifications of the Su‑27 continue to be in service with the Russian Air Force; in addition, as a result of the deep modernization of the Su‑27, new models of “4+” generation fighters have been developed. Su-30

The heavy two-seat multirole fighter Su‑30 of the “4+” generation was created at the Sukhoi Design Bureau on the basis of the Su‑27UB combat trainer aircraft through deep modernization. The main purpose is to control group combat operations of fighters when solving problems of gaining air superiority, supporting combat operations of other types of aviation, providing cover ground troops and objects, destruction of landing forces in the air, as well as conducting aerial reconnaissance and destruction of ground (surface) targets. The Su-30 features a long range and duration of flights and effective control of a group of fighters. The aircraft's Western designation is "Flanker-C".

The two-seat supersonic all-weather long-range fighter-interceptor MiG-31 was developed in the USSR at the Mikoyan Design Bureau in the 1970s. At that time it was the first fourth generation aircraft. Designed to intercept and destroy air targets at all altitudes - from extremely low to very high, day and night, in any weather conditions, in difficult jamming environments. In fact, the main task of the MiG-31 was to intercept cruise missiles across the entire range of altitudes and speeds, as well as low-flying satellites. The fastest combat aircraft. The MiG-31 fighter-interceptors currently in service with the Russian Air Force (252 units) have several modifications:

PAK-FA

The promising front-line aviation complex - PAK FA - includes a fifth-generation multi-role fighter developed by the Sukhoi Design Bureau under the designation T-50. The totality of characteristics will have to exceed all foreign analogues and in the near future, after being put into service, it will become the main fighter aircraft of the Russian Air Force.

The PAK FA is designed to gain air supremacy and intercept enemy air attack weapons in all altitude ranges, as well as launch high-precision weapons against ground (surface) targets without entering the air defense zone day or night in any weather conditions, and can be used for aerial reconnaissance using on-board equipment. The aircraft fully meets all the requirements for fifth-generation fighters: stealth, supersonic cruising speed, high maneuverability with high overloads, advanced electronics, multifunctionality.

According to plans, serial production of the T-50 aircraft for the Russian Air Force should begin in 2016, and by 2020 the first aviation units equipped with it will appear in Russia. PAK-DP (MiG‑41)

Some sources report that the MiG Design Bureau, together with the design bureau of the Sokol aircraft plant (Nizhny Novgorod), is currently developing a long-range, high-speed fighter-interceptor with the code name “advanced long-range interception aircraft complex” - PAK DP, also known as MiG-41. It was stated that development began in 2013 on the basis of the MiG-31 fighter by order of the Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces. Perhaps this refers to a deep modernization of the MiG-31, which was worked on earlier, but was not implemented. Formation of the Air Force and Air Defense Forces of the Russian Federation (1992–1998)

Decay process Soviet Union and the events that followed noticeably weakened the Air Force and Air Defense Forces (ADF). A significant part of the aviation group (about 35%) remained on the territory of the former Soviet republics (more than 3,400 aircraft, including 2,500 combat aircraft).

Also on their territories remained the most prepared airfield network for basing military aviation, which, in comparison with the USSR, was reduced by almost half in the Russian Federation (primarily in the Western strategic direction). The level of flight and combat training of Air Force pilots has sharply decreased.

Due to the disbandment large quantity radio engineering units, the continuous radar field over the territory of the state disappeared. Was significantly weakened and general system air defense of the country.

Russia, the last of the former USSR republics, began building the Air Force and Air Defense Forces as an integral part of its own Armed Forces (Decree of the President of the Russian Federation of May 7, 1992). The priorities of this construction were to prevent a significant decrease in the level of combat effectiveness of formations and units of the Air Force and Air Defense Forces, to reduce personnel through the revision and optimization of their organizational structure, to remove obsolete weapons from service and military equipment etc.

During this period, the combat strength of the Air Force and Air Defense Aviation was represented almost exclusively by fourth-generation aircraft (Tu-22M3, Su-24M/MR, Su-25, Su-27, MiG-29 and MiG-31). The total strength of the Air Force and Air Defense Aviation was reduced almost threefold - from 281 to 102 air regiments.

As of January 1, 1993, the Russian Air Force had two commands (long-range and military) transport aviation(VTA)), 11 aviation associations, 25 air divisions, 129 air regiments (including 66 combat and 13 military transport). The aircraft fleet amounted to 6,561 aircraft, excluding aircraft stored at reserve bases (including 2,957 combat ones).

At the same time, measures were taken to withdraw formations, formations and air force units from the territories of countries far and near abroad, including the 16th Air Army (AA) from the territory of Germany, 15 AA from the Baltic countries.

Period 1992 – early 1998 became a time of great painstaking work governing bodies Air Force and Air Defense Forces to develop a new concept of military development of the Russian Armed Forces, its aerospace defense with the implementation of the principle of defense sufficiency in the development of the Air Defense Forces and offensive character in the use of the Air Force.

During these years, the Air Force had to take a direct part in the armed conflict on the territory of the Chechen Republic (1994–1996). Subsequently, the experience gained allowed us to more thoughtfully and with high efficiency carry out the active phase of the counter-terrorist operation in the North Caucasus in 1999–2003.

In the 1990s, due to the beginning of the collapse of the unified anti-aircraft field of the Soviet Union and former countries- members of the Warsaw Treaty Organization, there was an urgent need to recreate its analogue within the borders of the former Soviet republics. In February 1995, the Commonwealth countries Independent States(CIS) an Agreement was signed on the creation of a Joint Air Defense System of the CIS member states, designed to solve security problems state borders in the airspace, as well as for conducting coordinated collective actions of air defense forces to repel a possible aerospace attack on one of the countries or a coalition of states.

However, assessing the process of accelerating the physical aging of weapons and military equipment, the Defense Committee State Duma The Russian Federation came to disappointing conclusions. As a result, a new concept of military development was developed, where it was planned, even before 2000, to reorganize the branches of the Armed Forces, reducing their number from five to three. As part of this reorganization, two independent branches of the Armed Forces were to be united in one form: the Air Force and the Air Defense Forces.

New branch of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation

In accordance with the Decree of the President of the Russian Federation dated July 16, 1997 No. 725 “On priority measures to reform the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation and improve their structure”, by January 1, 1999, the the new kind Armed Forces - Air Force. In a short time, the Air Force High Command developed a regulatory framework for a new branch of the Armed Forces, which made it possible to ensure the continuity of management of Air Force formations, maintaining their combat readiness at the required level, and performing combat duty missions air defense, as well as conducting operational training activities.

By the time the Russian Armed Forces were united into a single branch, the Air Force consisted of 9 operational formations, 21 aviation divisions, 95 air regiments, including 66 combat aviation regiments, 25 separate aviation squadrons and detachments based at 99 airfields. The total aircraft fleet was 5,700 aircraft (including 20% ​​training) and more than 420 helicopters.

The Air Defense Forces included: an operational-strategic formation, 2 operational, 4 operational-tactical formations, 5 air defense corps, 10 air defense divisions, 63 anti-aircraft units missile forces, 25 fighter air regiments, 35 units of radio technical troops, 6 formations and reconnaissance units and 5 units electronic warfare. It was armed with: 20 aircraft of the A-50 radar surveillance and guidance complex, more than 700 air defense fighters, more than 200 anti-aircraft missile divisions and 420 radio engineering units with radar stations of various modifications.

As a result of the measures taken, a new organizational structure of the Air Force was created, which included two air armies: the 37th Air Army of the Supreme High Command (strategic purpose) (VA VGK (SN) and the 61st VA VGK (VTA). Instead of front-line air armies aviation, air force and air defense armies were formed, operationally subordinate to the commanders of the military districts.The Moscow Air Force and Air Defense District was created in the Western strategic direction.

Further construction of the organizational structure of the Air Force was carried out in accordance with the Plan for the Construction and Development of the Armed Forces for 2001–2005, approved in January 2001 by the President of the Russian Federation.

In 2003, army aviation was transferred to the Air Force, and in 2005–2006. – part of connections and parts military air defense, equipped with S-300V anti-aircraft missile systems (ZRS) and Buk complexes. In April 2007, the Air Force adopted an anti-aircraft weapon missile system new generation S-400 "Triumph", designed to destroy all modern and promising aerospace attack weapons.

At the beginning of 2008, the Air Force included: an operational-strategic formation (KSpN), 8 operational and 5 operational-tactical formations (air defense corps), 15 formations and 165 units. In August of the same year, units of the Air Force took part in the Georgian-South Ossetian military conflict (2008) and in the operation to force Georgia to peace. During the operation, the Air Force carried out 605 air sorties and 205 helicopter sorties, including 427 air sorties and 126 helicopter sorties to carry out combat missions.

The military conflict revealed certain shortcomings in the organization of combat training and the control system Russian aviation, as well as the need to significantly update the Air Force aircraft fleet.

Air Force in the new look of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation

In 2008, the transition to the formation of a new look for the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation (including the Air Force) began. In the course of the activities carried out, the Air Force switched to a new organizational structure, more appropriate modern conditions and the realities of time. Air Force and Air Defense commands were formed, subordinate to the newly created operational-strategic commands: Western (headquarters - St. Petersburg), Southern (headquarters - Rostov-on-Don), Central (headquarters - Yekaterinburg) and Eastern ( headquarters - Khabarovsk).

The Air Force High Command was assigned the tasks of planning and organizing combat training, the long-term development of the Air Force, as well as training the leadership of command and control bodies. With this approach, responsibility for the preparation and use of military aviation forces and assets was distributed and duplication of functions was excluded, both in peacetime and during combat operations.

In 2009–2010 a transition was made to a two-level (brigade-battalion) system of command and control of the Air Force. As a result total Air Force formations were reduced from 8 to 6, all air defense formations (4 corps and 7 air defense divisions) were reorganized into 11 aerospace defense brigades. At the same time, active renewal of the aircraft fleet is taking place. Air Force Aviation (AVVS) According to its purpose and tasks, it is divided into long-range, military transport, operational-tactical and army aviation, which includes: bomber, attack, fighter, reconnaissance, transport and special aviation.

Organizationally, Air Force aviation consists of air bases that are part of Air Force formations, as well as other units and organizations directly subordinate to the Commander-in-Chief of the Air Force.

Long-Range Aviation (YES) is a means of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation and is intended to solve strategic (operational-strategic) and operational tasks in theaters of military operations (strategic directions).

The DA formations and units are armed with strategic and long-range bombers, tanker aircraft and reconnaissance aircraft. Operating primarily in strategic depth, DA formations and units perform the following main tasks: defeating air bases (airfields), ground-based missile systems, aircraft carriers and other surface ships, targets from enemy reserves, military-industrial facilities, administrative and political centers, energy objects and hydraulic structures, naval bases and ports, command posts of armed forces associations and air defense operational control centers in the theater of military operations, land communications facilities, landing detachments and convoys; mining from the air. Some of the DA forces may be involved in conducting aerial reconnaissance and performing special tasks.

Long-range aviation is a component of strategic nuclear forces.

DA formations and units are based taking into account its operational-strategic purpose and tasks from Novgorod in the west of the country to Anadyr and Ussuriysk in the east, from Tiksi in the north and to Blagoveshchensk in the south of the country.

The basis of the aircraft fleet is the Tu-160 and Tu-95MS strategic missile carriers, Tu-22M3 long-range missile carrier-bombers, Il-78 tanker aircraft and Tu-22MR reconnaissance aircraft.

The main armament of the aircraft: long-range aircraft cruise missiles and operational-tactical missiles in nuclear and conventional configuration, as well as aircraft bombs of various purposes and calibers.

A practical demonstration of the spatial indicators of the combat capabilities of the DA command are air patrol flights of Tu-95MS and Tu-160 aircraft in the area of ​​​​the island of Iceland and the Norwegian Sea; to the North Pole and to the Aleutian Islands; along the east coast of South America.

Regardless of the organizational structure in which long-range aviation exists and will exist, its combat strength, the characteristics of the aircraft and weapons in service, the main task of long-range aviation on the scale of the Air Force should be considered both nuclear and non-nuclear deterrence of potential adversaries. In the event of the outbreak of war, the DA will carry out tasks to reduce the military-economic potential of the enemy, destroy important military installations, and disrupt state and military control.

Analysis modern views on the purpose of the aircraft, the tasks assigned to it, the predicted conditions for their implementation show that at present and in the future, long-range aviation continues to be the main one impact force Air Force.

Main directions of development of long-range aviation:

  • maintaining and increasing operational capabilities to carry out assigned tasks as part of the strategic deterrence forces and general purpose forces through modernization of Tu-160, Tu-95MS, Tu-22MZ bombers with service life extension;

Military transport aviation (MTA) is a means of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation and is intended to solve strategic (operational-strategic), operational and operational-tactical tasks in theaters of military operations (strategic directions).

The military transport aircraft Il-76MD, An-26, An-22, An-124, An-12PP, and Mi-8MTV transport helicopters are in service with the formations and units of the Military Aviation Administration. Bomber Aviation (BA), armed with strategic, long-range and operational-tactical bombers, is the main strike weapon of the Air Force and is designed to destroy enemy troop groups, aviation, naval forces, destroy its important military, military-industrial, energy facilities, communications centers, conduct air reconnaissance and mining from the air, mainly in strategic and operational depth.

Assault Aviation (AS), armed with attack aircraft, is a means of air support for troops (forces) and is intended to destroy troops, ground (sea) objects, as well as enemy aircraft (helicopters) at home airfields (sites), conduct aerial reconnaissance and mine mining from the air primarily at the forefront, in tactical and operational-tactical depth.

Fighter Aviation (IA), armed with fighter aircraft, is designed to destroy enemy aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles in the air and ground (sea) targets.

Reconnaissance aviation (RzA), armed with reconnaissance aircraft and unmanned aerial vehicles, is designed to conduct aerial reconnaissance of objects, the enemy, terrain, weather, air and ground radiation and chemical conditions.

Transport aviation (TrA), armed with transport aircraft, is intended for airborne landings, transportation of troops, weapons, military and special equipment and other materiel by air, ensuring maneuver and combat operations of troops (forces), and performing special tasks.

Formations, units, subunits of bomber, attack, fighter, reconnaissance and transport aviation can also be involved in solving other tasks.

Special Aviation (SPA), armed with airplanes and helicopters, is designed to perform special tasks. Units and subunits of special aviation are directly or operationally subordinate to the commander of the Air Force formation and are involved in: conducting radar reconnaissance and targeting air and ground (sea) targets; installation of electronic interference and aerosol curtains; search and rescue of flight crews and passengers; in-flight refueling of aircraft; evacuation of the wounded and sick; providing control and communications; conducting airborne radiation, chemical, biological, engineering intelligence and performing other tasks.
