Good quality translator from English to Russian. Which translator is better and more accurate? Claims backed by technology

Translating a letter from a foreign partner or a fragment from documentation - these and other tasks caused by the need to quickly understand the content of a text in a foreign language arise very often. Today, online translation services help overcome the language barrier. For Translator's Day, which is celebrated on September 30, we will talk about the technologies on which the work of such services is based, get to know them ourselves and try to choose the best one.

Technologies

There are two main machine translation technologies: Rule-Based Machine Translation (RBMT) and Statistical Machine Translation (SMT). In the first, to obtain a translation, the known rules languages, implemented in the form of linguistic algorithms. Statistical technology does not use such algorithms: it gradually “learns” a language by comparing thousands of parallel texts - that is, texts containing the same information, but in different languages - and selecting the most likely translation option on this basis.

Let's look at these technologies in more detail.

Rule-based translation process, can be divided into several stages.

  • Morphological analysis, during which gender, number, person and other morphological characteristics of words are indicated. This raises the problem of polysemy: the same word can refer to different parts of speech. For example, the English “blow” can be used both as a verb (to blow, to fan) and as a noun (to blow). On at this stage Both translation options are recorded.
  • Individual words are combined into groups. For example, the group “many nice letters” consists of the quantitative word “many” to define plural, the adjective "nice" and the plural noun "letters". This allows you to resolve the issue of grammatical ambiguity and remove “extra” meanings of words.
  • Parsing sentences, that is, the definition of the members of the sentence and their place in the sentence. First the program looks for the predicate. Then, before the found predicate, the subject is searched. If it is not there, then the algorithm looks for the subject behind the predicate. If the subject is not there either, then it is considered that the subject is absent, as happens, for example, in impersonal sentences(“They brought the cake”).

Coordination of found parts of sentences and groups of dependent words - synthesis of proposals.

A similar approach to translation is used in the SYSTRANet services of SYSTRAN and Translate.Ru Russian company PROMT.

The use of the rules was the only way machine translation, until 2006, when the Google Translate service appeared, based on a different - statistical - approach to translation.

For your work statistical translation system needs an extensive database of parallel texts. The sources of such texts can be multilingual versions of organizations' websites, for example, databases of EU documents. At the same time, for the translator to work correctly, it is necessary to have not just a large, but a huge number of parallel documents in the database. It is no wonder that the first available statistical translator was the service of the largest search engine - Google. Soon, competitors followed: Bing with Microsoft Translator and Yandex with Yandex.Translation.

By default, SYSTRANet offers translation of texts, web pages and work with a dictionary. Registered users additionally get access to translation of RSS feeds, files and the “Own dictionary” function. Also free Account allows you to use the options “Translation while typing”, “Alternative meanings of words”, etc.

SYSTRANet also allows you to translate files in txt, rtf, htm formats. To improve the quality of translation, developers offer specialized dictionaries on nine topics. In total, more than 35 translation directions are declared in the system.

The PROMT online translator Translate.Ru is the oldest in RuNet. IN this moment It supports 9 languages. Translate.Ru allows you to select the subject of the text for a more accurate translation. A total of 16 thematic dictionaries are available (“Sports”, “Travel”, “Computers”, etc.). Preliminary spell checking and dictionary function are supported. In order to view the list of translation options, you need to select a word in the source text window and then click on the “Dictionary” button on the toolbar - all options known to the system will be displayed in a separate window.

Dictionary window inTranslate. Ru

Bing search engine translator is based on Microsoft Translator - cloud service statistical translation from Microsoft. It supports 44 languages, including Russian and Ukrainian, and has the functions of reading text, searching for text in a search engine, translating web pages and sending translations by e-mail. The limit on the size of the translated text is 5 thousand characters.

Google's translation service is the most popular on the Internet. It supports 80 languages, including Russian, Ukrainian and Belarusian. There is an instant translation function, when the result is displayed immediately after entering the source text. The translation direction is determined automatically. If you insert a web link into the translation field, the entire page will be translated. You can also translate documents in standard office formats and PDF format.

Of the useful functions of Google Translate, especially noteworthy is the ability to get an alternative translation of individual words and phrases. In addition, the system has voice input and the ability to listen to the sound of the original text and translation - for example, you can play sounds from a tablet or smartphone, remember them, and communicate in a foreign country.

There are no restrictions on the number of words in the processed text.

The online translation service from Yandex appeared in 2011 and currently provides the ability to translate in 46 languages, including Russian, Ukrainian and Belarusian. Yandex.Translation works in two modes: text translation and web page translation. To translate a web page, you need to paste the link into the input field and click on the “Translate” button.

The service supports automatic language detection, an instant translation function, and hints when typing (using the first letters, the service tries to determine the continuation of a word, or, taking into account the context, suggests the most likely next word). Spell checking is available for Russian, English and Ukrainian languages. You can also listen to the pronunciation of the translation and the original text.

In addition to text translation, Yandex.Translation allows you to view detailed dictionary entries from the machine dictionary, which include grouped translations, examples of use, transcription for English words, parts of speech, etc. In addition, in the text input field you can see synonyms for a particular word, which allows you to improve the quality of the translation. To view the dictionary and list of synonyms, you need to left-click on any word and hold for 1 second. When you select any synonym with the mouse, it will automatically replace the original word. Synonyms are available for Russian, English, Ukrainian and Belarusian words.

Auto. The cabin space has been updated and there are new paint and wheel options. Buyers will also be able to choose among an array of engines burning gasoline or diesel and with three or four cylinders. Options range from a 1.0-liter inline-three with 74 horsepower all the way up to a 1.4-liter turbo four with 148 . The suspension and steering systems have been reworked as well. (Seat reveals facelifted Ibiza hatchback family in Barcelona)

All translators had problems with the “as well” arrangement. For example, Google offered the following option: “The suspension and steering systems have been redesigned, as well”). But everyone figured out horsepower, even in the form of “hp,” and Google and Yandex also showed translation options. And everyone has their own. Translate.Ru, without specifying the topic “Cars,” stubbornly considered “cabin” to be a cabin. But having tuned in, I came up with, perhaps, the most acceptable translation option. SYSTRANet approached this phrase from the other side: “The cabin space” he translated as “Cabin Space”.

Football. Riyad Mahrez hit an early brace as Leicester City took another step towards Premier League safety with victory over lacklustre Southampton. The Algerian forward found the net with a low drive on seven minutes and soon doubled his tally when turning home Jamie Vardy's pull-back.(Riyad Mahrez hit an early brace)

The text turned out to be very difficult. One after another, translators suggested hitting or pressing early braces (“hit an early brace”), and Google helpfully suggested curly braces as well. It’s nice that all the translators except SYSTRANet correctly identified the Leicester City club, and Yandex even put its name in quotation marks. Translate.Ru with football settings was the only one who correctly identified “net” as something related to the goal net: “The Algerian forward found the net…”, and Yandex was the only one who determined that it had found it was their forward (after which Yandex was no longer interested in the goal). “Low drive” was both “low driving” (Yandex) and “low drive” (Bing), and... But let's not talk about sad things (this does not mean that I was rooting for Southampton). SYSTRANet surpassed everyone: “The Algerian front found a network with a low drive...”

Gadgets. Phablets are essentially a larger phone or a smaller tablet with cellular radio capability. While there are smaller 8 inch tablets like the iPad Mini and Samsung Galaxy Tab 8 that sport cellular capability, the phablet definition is limited to screen sizes under 7 inches - perhaps that being the limit of how ridiculous it looks to put such a device to your ear to use as a phone. (Is the phablet the future of smartphones?)

All translators coped with the task: their translations allowed us to mainly understand the meaning of the message. Nobody, however, coped with “sport”. But polite Translate.Ru translated: “ your ear» exclusively as “Your ear”.

Joke.

- Is it really true that everything between Rosalie and you, Michael, is over? A whole year you were keeping company.

- Just imagine!

- And did you tell her about your rich uncle whose only heir you are.

- It was just because I told her about it. She left me to become my auntie.

Em dashes did not become a problem in translation. Google and Yandex coped with the task better than others. They both realized that “She left me to become my aunt.” True, for some reason Yandex decided to rename the hero Mikhail.

Indirect speech.

He said I was pretty.

He said I was so intelligent.

He said I danced so well.

He said I had lovely hair.

He said he would never forget that day.

Yandex turned out to be almost perfect. Judge for yourself:

He said I was pretty.

He said I was so smart.

He said I danced so well.

He said I have beautiful hair.

He said he would never forget that day.

Google was also good. It is curious, however, that Yandex considered the subject of speech (having fine hair, good-looking and dancing well) to be a lady, while Google suggested a masculine option, for example, “I got fine hair.” But we must give him his due; the feminine gender was also present among the translation options. Perhaps this shows that Yandex analyzes longer groups of words. Bing was undecided: sometimes the object of speech was a lady, sometimes a gentleman. SYSTRANet went the furthest in generalizations, using the neuter gender: “I danced so well.” The last sentence was not easy for many test takers. Translate version: “He said he would never forget that day.”

“So which translator is the best?” - the reader will ask. If we're talking about about a desktop translator “for every day”, then, in my opinion, it will be Google or Yandex.

Judge for yourself. All systems coped with the translation into Russian in approximately the same way: the result of their efforts made it possible to understand the meaning of the text. Perhaps SYSTRANet has lagged behind. If, in addition to Russian, you use Belarusian or Ukrainian, your choice is Google or Yandex. Google is the leader in terms of the wealth of possibilities: it has document translation and voice input, which Yandex does not have. However, translating the entire document is not a very popular “feature”, since a zealous translator can ruin the formatting of the source document. Voice input- also still exotic, although very promising. But in terms of regular translation, Yandex has made a significant step forward and is now, perhaps, not inferior to Google.

I would also like to add that an alternative to an automatic translator can be a live online translation service. For example - Professional online translators.

Today it is impossible to imagine working with a computer, programs installed on it or office documents without knowing a foreign language at least at the elementary (school) level. Of course, most often this refers to a language that is a kind of universal standard in the world. However, quite often knowledge of other languages may be required (for example, to master a specific program or translate correspondence from foreign partners from non-English-speaking countries). And here many invaluable help provide special translation programs and online machine translation systems, which currently have very wide capabilities. But which translator is the best and most accurate? To answer this question, let's try to look at several of the most popular software products and online services, and also find out the advantages and disadvantages of each of them.

Which is best: the main problems of all machine translation systems

To begin with, let's immediately agree that we should separate programs based on the possibility of installing them on desktop or mobile devices. OS we will not. Almost each of the applications presented below has versions for different OSes. As for online translators, they can be used regardless of what system is installed on a computer or mobile device, because all you need is a web browser and Internet access.

Before considering the most popular programs and services, it is worth mentioning that not all of them are equal in terms of translation quality and basic capabilities. It is believed that none of the known programs or related services is capable of fully providing accurate translation from any language. This is mainly connected only with the peculiarities of the use of certain expressions, even in different regions one state. In addition, variations of the same language (dialects), depending on the region, can differ quite greatly.

As an example, there is a huge difference between American, pure English, Scottish and Irish dialects. In Ukraine, for example, the language used in the western regions is so different from the one used in the central and eastern regions that residents often have difficulty understanding each other (and this is not about pronunciation!). Finally, the construction of sentences can change quite a lot, and if you strictly follow the rules for the use of words and their location in a sentence, the translation can turn out to be, as they say, “clumsy”. Yes, and in specific, narrowly focused areas of translation, problems may occur. That is why it is almost impossible to say unambiguously which translator is the best.

However, machine translation is only machine translation because even in technical specifications, translation using automated systems is not welcomed by specialists. And if individual words, phrases or sentences can be translated very close to the original, then, alas, there is no question of translating entire texts containing the same idiomatic expressions, specific figures of speech, proverbs or sayings.

The most popular translators and online services

But let's get back to the programs and services themselves. As for automated translation systems, which are used, for example, most often in the post-Soviet space, among all the huge diversity that is presented today on the market of software and online services, several main systems can be distinguished separately:

  • Google Translate;
  • "Yandex. Translator";
  • PROMPT;
  • Babylon 10;
  • SYSTRAN;
  • Babelfish;
  • ABBYY Lingvo;
  • “Proling OOFIS”, etc.

Of course it's only small part everything that is presented on the Internet, but for now let's limit ourselves to this.

Google Translate, Bing and Yandex.Translate

The first software product and similar Internet service, as is already clear, is promoted by Google Corporation, built into the browser of the same name and search engine.

It supports more than 90 languages, can recognize printed and handwritten text, voice, supports quick translation of inscriptions when you point the camera at them, translates entire pages by URL, and has a very wide database of glossaries. This system copes quite well with translations, but some functions, such as adding words and phrases to dictionaries, are available only after authorization.

The Bing search engine translator is actively promoted by Microsoft, however, it differs from the product described above only in that it does not have voice acting and examples.

When discussing which translator is better, one cannot ignore the Russian service Yandex, which in some ways is very similar to Google and Bing.

It is more aimed specifically at the Russian-speaking audience, has almost the same capabilities and translates at approximately the same level. However, many users who have questions about which translator is better - Yandex or Google - prefer the domestic service. When it comes to translating one word or sentence, all these systems are on the same level. But many people do not take into account that Yandex and Bing have restrictions on the number of characters entered (10,000 and 5,000, respectively), but Google has no such limit. But in Yandex and Google there is a transcription and options for using a word or phrase with examples of synonyms or antonyms, but in Bing this is not the case.

PROMPT

If we consider questions about which translator from English to Russian is the best of all existing ones, many experts and users prefer the PROMPT system.

The program can be installed on a computer, integrated into office text editors, or used online service Translate.Ru. Both products are notable for the fact that you can choose the topic of translation, rather than searching for a meaning among all the options presented.

Compared to the systems described above, the list of examples of the use of a word or term is much wider. But the translation does not automatically appear immediately after entering the text.

Babylon

If you understand which translator is better, it’s worth mentioning the Babylon 10 system.

This product is the most primitive and can be used solely to translate one or more words, providing the user with related concepts in the form of synonyms. It is not worth using it as a professional tool, but, for example, for schoolchildren or people who do not know a certain language, it is suitable precisely because of its simplicity. If you need a more feature-rich solution, you can purchase dedicated business software options.

SYSTRAN

This translation system is one of the oldest, since the beginning of its development dates back to 1968.

Its creators have truly enormous experience, but the main service looks too simple, and additional functions can only be used after official registration or purchasing a software product.

Babel Fish

If you understand which translator is better, it is worth mentioning separately about this system. True, surprisingly, it is clearly not aimed at Russian-speaking users.

It is not clear why, but support for the same Ukrainian language in the direction of translation there is, but the Russian language is missing as such!

ABBYY Lingvo

Sometimes users have legitimate doubts about which translator is better than Google Translate or its analogues.

Without a doubt, the ABBYY Lingvo package is one of the most powerful systems, since it supports a large number of languages, allows you to translate texts even from pictures and photographs, provides several options for translating and using words, etc. However, voice pronunciation is not provided for all languages packages. The hint system also looks quite interesting, when when you enter a word or phrase, several examples of their use are immediately displayed, which sometimes helps to find the most accurate interpretation.

"Proling OFFICE"

As for the software products of this package, the Root/Play system is mainly used.

However, its specificity lies in the fact that it is designed exclusively for translations from Russian into Ukrainian and vice versa. Of course, during installation the application can be integrated into text editors, which is a very convenient solution for Ukrainian-speaking users. The quality of the translation is top notch, there are several additional dictionaries, but the online translation system seems a little awkward.

Which translator is the best and most accurate?

It goes without saying that not all existing machine translation systems were described above; in fact, there are many more of them, but these are the most popular. It remains to summarize. Speaking about which translator is better, by and large, it is impossible to single out just one. However, if you take into account some of the capabilities and features of both installed programs and online services available for use, preference can be given to the products of Google, Yandex, PROMPT and ABBYY Lingvo. Perhaps they are the ones who can share the first places among themselves and rightfully deserve all the attention from users.

Hi all. Today's article is about the 13 best online translator ov in Russian. I think some people know and use a couple of services all the time, including me. But the rest, to be honest, were news to me too. As an example I will use Russian-English text translator, in my opinion, it is more widely used than other languages. I'll start with the most famous and domestic products.

Yandex translate

Behind Lately began to please me more and more every time. Has acquired a lot of functions, the quality has noticeably improved thanks to the latest technologies in the field of neural networks and statistical models, and more languages were added (currently there are about 100). The resource allows you to translate text (opens by default), the entire site, and text from an image.

How to translate text

How to translate a website

Click on the “Site” tab and paste the page URL. The system will do the rest itself.

How to translate text from a picture

Click on “Picture”. In the window that opens, mark the language. Drag the file directly onto the page or upload the image to the portal using the “Select file” link.

Be sure to pay attention to the highlighted area of the letters. If some letters are shaded, then the quality of the translation will be inaccurate.

If everything is fine, in the upper right corner click on the “Open in Explorer” link.

Where on the new page we get the result.

I have already written an article on how this can be done in several ways. You can read this.

Google Translate

If we compare with the previous one, we should note the number of languages - there are about 10 more of them (at the time of writing this article). There is transcription and transliteration of the text, synonyms, similar words. Also, the entered and translated sentences can be saved, listened to, sent to a friend by email or social network etc.

I'm very pleased with the mobile version. We download the application to a smartphone or tablet, download the languages, they do not take up space (Russian is about 36 megabytes), and you can start working without an Internet connection. We simply photograph the text, inscription, etc. Select it on the screen and instantly get the result. You can also speak and write using a stylus.

Promt translator online

This, like the previous ones, is also Russian production. Personally, I met him back in the 2000s, then he did not have an online version. Installed from disk and easily translated printed text and Internet sites. At that time, this caused a sensation, when there was neither Yandex nor Google, the offspring of this focus.

Promt contains both the translator himself and the dictionary.

ImTranslator

This is exactly the case if you need to translate a text and look at it in comparison of several options at once. Includes an extensive set of additional utilities.

Translate.com

More than 100 languages. The technology used is, more precisely, a dictionary from Microsoft Translator. To enter words, you can use the microphone or virtual keyboard. Additional services are offered for money.

Babelfish

I didn’t know about it before, which is understandable - it’s a purely foreign product. Among 75 languages, I didn’t find Russian, but Ukrainian is present. Can translate individual words, phrases, sentences, websites. And also translate Word online, PDF and txt.

Babylon

I recently discovered it for myself, although it is quite famous. 75 languages, more than 2000 glossaries and dictionaries. There is a program for PC, which can be downloaded for free for individual users, which is more convenient in my opinion.

DeepL Translator

Everything is very high quality. In case you don’t like something, you can place an order with professionals - for a fee. I was very pleased that when translating he can construct logical sentences and choose different variants of word combinations. And this is rare!

Bing

In my opinion, Bing, along with the services described here, is much inferior to them, even though it was developed by Microsoft. I will say this - he is simple-minded. Although many people like it, a couple of users from my social circle willingly use it. A notable difference is the choice of male or female voices during dubbing. Eat mobile applications for Andorid, IOS, Amazn and Windows.

Every day we deal not only with Russian, but also with English. However, not everyone can master it perfectly. That’s when online translators come to the rescue.

Online translators work using different algorithms, but their goal is the same - to provide you with a high-quality translation.

True, living speech is still difficult to use with high technology.

This is one of the many reasons why we often encounter openly funny phrases and why you shouldn’t translate documents this way.

The results of translations can even be read, sent by email, printed or distributed on social networks.

Basically, this optimizes the speed of operation. You don't need to explain to your colleagues where you found the meaning of a particular word. No need to copy and paste all the text into a word processor to print.

Of course, among the minuses is the lack of a Russian-language version, although the site provides translations from and to this language.

In addition, the service provides additional services related to translation, but they are no longer free.

In general, this site is a good alternative to already well-known online translators.

conclusions

In fact, choosing the best online translator is quite problematic.

It all depends on what exactly you are translating. And this concerns not only the style, but also the volume of the text itself.

For the translation of words and phrases, there may be one leader, but in terms of translating entire documents there may be others.

Of these seven, it is impossible not to mention Google Translate. It is best suited as a universal one. And you will understand the text, and you will understand a separate word according to its meaning.

However, great hopes should be placed on him. This service is best suited when you just suddenly need to understand the essence of a document or website.

It is also useful if you need to quickly clarify the translation of a word. Still, speed is one of the advantages.

The best online translator if you need to translate phrases is Multitran.

Widespread community support and all kinds of translation options are undoubtedly very often needed. And although the site looks a little old, it is a good source of knowledge.

The second place in this category goes to Reverso. And that’s thanks to its special section.

Overall, this online translator is quite nice to look at. He can translate most of the phrases you need. However, you should not enter large quantities text turns out clumsily.

And third place in the dictionary category goes to ABBYY Lingvo Live. It is simple, there is support from other users, but it is still limited. Much more can be learned from its offline version.

Among the online translators of large texts, it is worth noting the inconspicuous www.freetranslation.com.

The English-language interface is a little intimidating, but it is convenient and practical. If you need an online translator for work, this is a good option.

Translate.ru is a good service, but it relies primarily on its paid products.
