"Little Jerusalem" - complete itinerary

The tour of the same name gives an opportunity to get acquainted with the main historical and architectural sights of Evpatoria, located on the territory of the Old City. These are the Dervishes, the Church of St. Nicholas, the Armenian Church, the Turkish baths, the Juma-Jami mosque, the Gezlev gates of the Wood Bazaar, the Yegie-Kapai synagogue, the Karaite kenasas, etc.

The most interesting objects of the route "Little Jerusalem":

  • Armenian church, consecrated to the glory of St. Nicholas, was erected in Evpatoria at the beginning of the 19th century. This building is unique in that it is the only monument of cult Armenian architecture on the entire western coast of the Crimean peninsula. The temple has been under restoration for several years. Restoration work is almost completed;

  • Of great interest is tekiye dervishes- an ancient monastery of wandering Muslim monks, built in the 16th century. This is a monument of national importance, consisting of three buildings - tekie, madrassas and mosques. There were other techies in the Crimea, but only the architectural complex in Evpatoria has survived to this day;

  • Jewish Temple Yegie-Kapai(the second name is Craft Sinanoga) is much younger than tekie - it appeared in the city at the beginning of the last century. The synagogue is still open. The building is a classic example of the religious architecture of Judaism;
  • The excursion route "Little Jerusalem" also includes Karaite kenas where representatives of the Crimean enclave of Karaites come to pray - one of the most small peoples on the planet. At present, there are no more than two thousand Karaites around the world. Kenases in Evpatoria are the spiritual center of this people;

    Excursion "Small Jerusalem" - Karaite kenasas

  • Impressive and Juma-Jami Mosque built in the middle of the 16th century. Its second name is Khan-Jami, since the mosque was khan's. It was in it that the most important state ceremony of the Crimean Khanate took place - the accession to the throne of new rulers of a powerful state. The majestic multi-domed mosque is one of the architectural and historical monuments of world significance;

  • St. Nicholas Cathedral Evpatoria ranks among the largest Christian churches throughout the peninsula. The church was erected in 1898 - in honor of the liberation of the city from the enemy army during Crimean War. The temple is made according to the canons of the Byzantine style. The main dome rises on a huge drum with windows in the form of semicircular arches. It weighs almost 157 tons and reaches a diameter of 18 m. The temple occupies a place among the main Orthodox shrines and architectural sights of Crimea;

If you go along the route "Little Jerusalem" without an excursion, on your own, focus on the street. Karaimskaya, the heart of the Old City.

Summing up

Excursion "Little Jerusalem" will not leave anyone indifferent. This great opportunity get acquainted with the history of Evpatoria and expand your horizons.

In the 15th century, Evpatoria bore the name Gezlev and was a large, well-fortified eastern city. Its historical part has preserved traces of the Ottoman past and clearly demonstrates how many cultures and religions coexisted on this land - here, next to each other, Christian, Muslim, Jewish monuments fit. It is no coincidence that the walking route through the historical center was called "Little Jerusalem"!

Walk route

Like any city, the ancient Gezlev begins for us with the gate. You can walk to the only surviving gates of the Turkish medieval fortress on foot from the center or get to the UkrSotsBank stop (you need minibuses No. 1, 6, 17) on Matveeva Street. From the stop you need to go to the crossroads - to the turn to Karaev and Karaimskaya streets.

Leading to the old part of the city Gezlev Gate. Earlier, when there were several gozlev gates, this building had a different name: Odun Bazaar Kapusu - Gate of the wood market. The word “preserved” does not really fit the gate: in 1959 they were demolished so that they would not interfere with traffic, and only in 2004 the monument was reconstructed according to old technologies, but still not very accurately: the original gate was larger.

You can not only pass through the gate, but also go into it. And even necessary: after all, on the third floor of this tower there is an interesting Ethnographical museum Crimean Tatars with a large model of the medieval Gezlev fortress. Having learned how the city looked like in ancient times, you can go down to the second floor and drink coffee according to an old local recipe with baklava and other oriental sweets in the colorful interiors of the coffee shop " Közlev qavesi».

From the gates of the wood market originates Karaim street, stretching for a kilometer along the old part of Evpatoria. In the warm season, on Friday evenings, this street becomes a pedestrian street, festivals, holidays, performances of street musicians are regularly held here, so it is great for walking. But now we need to turn right and move along Karaev street, to see Tekie dervishes.

This ancient abode of the order of "spinning dervishes" is located at 18 Karaev Street. The religious complex has survived in Evpatoria since the 15th century. In addition to the two-story tekie building, there is a small Shukural-Efendi mosque and a former religious school, a madrasah, in which the ethnographic museum of the Crimean Tatars is located on the territory. There are regular small excursions along the rivers.

If we turn from Karaev Street to International Street, on the right side you can see the Armenian Church of St. Nicholas. A yellow limestone temple appeared here in the first half of the 19th century at the expense of the Armenian community. Pay attention to the carved image of a cross similar to flowering plant, on the east wall temple is a khachkar, a symbol Armenian Church. Divine services are sometimes held in the temple, but the rest of the time it is closed, so you won’t be able to see it inside.

By International the street you need to pass before turning on Red Army and move along it until you come to the intersection with Karaimskaya street.

On Krasnoarmeiskaya Street, pay attention to house 20 - this is a medieval turkish hammam. The construction is already more than four centuries old, but until the 1990s the baths were active. Now they are being reconstructed, so that they can be viewed from the outside.

Turn right at Karaimskaya and turn onto Prosmushkiny street to inspect the synagogue of Egia-Kapai. This synagogue of the beginning of the 20th century was built for representatives of Jewish craft associations, which distinguishes it from another old synagogue, the "Merchant". The synagogue is functioning, the interior is quite interesting, in summer and autumn you can get on an excursion if you check the schedule in official group Synagogues on social media

You can also look into the cafe located at the synagogue " Yoskin cat"- one of the most famous catering establishments in Evpatoria. This is not just a cafe, but a real ethnographic museum and Cultural Center: “Shabbat musical evenings” and lectures on kosher cuisine are held here, and the menu includes forshmak, tsimes, stuffed fish, chicken liver and others traditional dishes Jewish home cooking.

Moving along Karaimskaya street, you will reach the complex "Karaite kenasses". This temple complex Karaites, who have lived on the territory of the Crimean peninsula since ancient times. The teachings of the Karaites are close to Judaism, and kenasses are prayer houses of this religious minority. They were built at the beginning of the last century. The complex, on the territory of which, in addition to two kenasses, there is a library and a museum of Karaite culture, is open to visitors. It is interesting to walk through the courtyards, decorated with fountains and trellises, entwined with grapes.

There is also a cafe on site. Karaman”, which means “Giant”. In the past, there was a charitable canteen for the poor at kenasses, and a cafe on the site of this canteen was named after its founder, Mark Kumysh-Kar, the headman of the Karaite community, who was distinguished by his tall stature. Here you need to order chebureks, yantyki pies, tiny dumplings khomur-dolma or sarma - meat in grape leaves.

After lunch at Karaman, you can continue the route. You should turn off Karaimskaya Street onto Efeta street and walk along it towards the embankment - to the square, on the other side of which is cathedral mosque Evpatoria - Juma-Jami.

The largest mosque in Crimea was built in the 16th century and had special meaning- it was in it that the "appointment" of the new Crimean Khan was announced. Now the mosque is operational, tourists are allowed to see it - at the entrance you will be explained the rules of conduct, given the necessary clothes and offered to listen to a tour for voluntary donations.

Near the mosque (if you walk along Summer lane) located oldest orthodox cathedral city, consecrated in honor of Nicholas the Wonderworker. The word "oldest" does not mean that it is so ancient - the temple was laid in late XIX century, although earlier in its place there was another church, also Nikolaevskaya. Approximately 2,000 people can fit in the temple, and with its neighboring mosque, it has a common architectural model - Hagia Sophia in Istanbul.

Behind the cathedral, Karaev Street begins and along it you have to return to the Gezlev Gates, having examined merchant synagogue- the oldest of the prayer houses of the local Jewish community. True, at the beginning of the last century, this synagogue was rebuilt. Now its fate is rather sad: although the facade of the building has been restored, part of the premises is used as a transformer substation, and there is no talk yet about restoring the interiors and transferring the building to believers.

The "Little Jerusalem" route is the most sightseeing walk in Yevpatoriya, although the territory that you will bypass as part of this excursion occupies less than two square kilometers. You can get around all the monuments of old Evpatoria in 1.5-2 hours, if you do not arrange long halts in a cafe.

Hello to all travelers!

Today I want to tell you about one of the most popular resorts in Crimea and a children's recreation center on the peninsula - this is the city of Evpatoria.

During our trip across the Crimea, in Evpatoria we spent the most time, walked around the city, sunbathed on sandy beaches, watched the life of the city. So today I suggest that you take a short walk around Evpatoria, find out why it is popular with tourists, see.

Business card cities - central part embankment them. Gorky:

Evpatoria is a very old city, its history goes back over 2500 years! Once it was an ancient Greek settlement, which was called Kerkinitida. During the time of the Crimean Khanate, the city was called Kezlev (the Turks called it Gezlev), and after the Crimea became part of Russian Empire the city was renamed Evpatoria.

The population of the city is slightly more than 100 thousand people, but during the holiday season this figure increases significantly due to the large influx of tourists. In our time, Evpatoria is first of all resort town, where most of infrastructure is designed specifically for tourists. And especially for children's recreation, for which all conditions are created here.

In addition to the famous sandy beaches, Evpatoria is also popular due to the surrounding lakes with therapeutic mud. For example, which we also visited while relaxing in Evpatoria. Its mud is widely used in local clinics, but anyone can visit Lake Moinaki absolutely free of charge and use its mud.

Evpatoria attracts tourists with its sandy beaches with a very convenient entrance to the sea:

I don’t really like to lie on the beach for a long time, but in Evpatoria we still spent a couple of days on the beach, enjoying the gentle Crimean sun.

Beach in Evpatoria:

A short video: the beach in Evpatoria in May 2015, 10 am:

In Evpatoria there are very interesting place, where within a radius of 100 meters from each other are located Orthodox church, Mosque And Jewish Synagogue. This is what real tolerance and religious tolerance means! This is a very popular route with tourists. The temple and the mosque are located on Revolution Street, next to Primorskaya Square and the embankment. Tereshkova.

Cathedral of Saint Nicholas:

Restoration work is underway inside, but the temple is still open to believers:

Juma Khan Jami Mosque:

The mosque has almost 500 years of history:

Near the cathedral and the mosque there are always a lot of organized tourist groups on large buses or on these excursion cars:

Streets of the old city in Evpatoria:

Of course Evpatoria - perfect place for recreation with the whole family and single tourists. True, it is worth saying that here a lot depends on seasonality. We rested in Yevpatoriya in May and at this time the season had not yet begun, so some cafes, restaurants and shops for tourists were still closed, and the water park was not working (for Crimeans it is considered that + 23-25 degrees is still cold), where -there was a renovation going on with might and main, and many paid beaches did not work. There were not very many tourists yet (the situation in Ukraine also affected), but on the other hand, for many it was a positive thing.

This is how we got a walk around Evpatoria. I think that many who have been to Evpatoria have something to add about this city. Then welcome to the comments...
