What is a technical editor. Moscow State University of Printing Arts. Acceptance of the manuscript to the publisher

Text editing (editing)- this is the process of making corrections, additions to the text, changing its structure. The purpose of editing is to prepare the manuscript in content and form for publication.

Professional text editing in a publishing house involves joint work with the author over the content, literary processing, text editing and technical editing.

Is it possible to do without professional editing of the text of the publication? Theoretically, the author has the right to publish any work, the content of which does not contradict the law. In practice, publishing houses in Moscow or another city rarely publish a book without editing - reputation is expensive.

The task of the team of editors is to change the text in the process of work in such a way (if editing is indispensable) that the author's thought and presentation style do not suffer.

Stages and types of text editing

MBA publishing house provides manuscript editing services works of art, scientific papers, periodicals information style, technical publications.

Editing a dissertation is different from preparing a collection of poems or an advertising booklet for publication. Depending on the source material, the editing procedure is built.

Text editing consists of three stages: initial proofreading, editing by the layout editor before subscribing to print, and final review at the printing house before printing.

There are three types of editing:

  • literary;
  • scientific;
  • technical.

Each text needs literary editing: a congratulatory address to the head of the company, a brochure about the enterprise, a multi-volume encyclopedia. Not because the author himself is not able to create the correct, easy readable work, but because it is difficult to discern errors in one's own creation. In editing, this feature of perception is called “blurry look”. Therefore, journalistic texts need editing no less than those written by people without special education.

Literary editing begins with an acquaintance with the material, determining the correspondence of the content to the title of the book. The first reading reveals the logical errors of the composition, deviations from the style of the work.

The editor finds typical lexical errors in the texts of documents. For example, in the legal collection, colloquial expressions are corrected, in artistic text- non-literary forms, incorrectly constructed sentences, in a children's book - terms that will be incomprehensible to the child due to age.

After agreeing on the literary revision with the author, the proofreader continues to work on the manuscript.

Scientific editor checks the authenticity of the facts of the presented material, proofreads drawings, formulas, documents, compares quotes with primary sources. Editing scientific text trusted by specialized professionals.

The text of the translation is proofread according to the original to assess the correctness of the meaning, then it is checked for compliance with the rules of the Russian language in terms of style, vocabulary, and punctuation.

A task technical editing- at the stage of creating a layout and layout, check how a computer sketch is transferred to print, the correctness of the arrangement of pages, chapters, headings, illustrations.

Text editing cost

Literary, scientific, technical editors have various editing operations in their arsenal. Whether or not to apply written editing of the text, editing-reduction, editing-alteration, literary finishing, is decided in the course of work. Therefore, prices may be adjusted, the table shows the base prices.

So, the creation of a book includes the following steps:

1. Acceptance of the manuscript to the publisher

This seemingly simple process contains a number of important procedural points that may become important in the future in organizational, legal and other respects. After reviewing your manuscript, our managers, based on the genre, the availability of diagrams, drawings, tables, illustrations, will assess the complexity of layout, advise on the optimal volume and execution of the publication, help you select the most suitable materials for the design of the book and its printing, make a preliminary calculation of the cost of publishing . Depending on the purpose of publishing the book (a gift to the author, for distribution to friends, for sale), you will be consulted and selected best option legal relations between you and the publisher. Acquainted with standard contracts You can contact the publishing house "Book-maker".

2. Preliminary study and evaluation of the manuscript

The manuscript accepted by the publishing house is reviewed by the executive secretary and submitted to the editorial office dealing with this subject. During the first viewing or selective reading of the manuscript, the publishing house specialists come to a common opinion as to whether the given manuscript is ready for acceptance into production or whether the author needs to refine the text, illustrative materials, invite the responsible editor, send the manuscript for external review, etc.

3. Reviewing manuscripts (at the request of the author)

A review is a text containing a critical assessment of a work. External review - is carried out by an authoritative specialist (or several specialists) known in this narrow field of knowledge. (This may not be about the whole work, but about its most specific part). One of serious problems- search for a worthy reviewer. After all, we are talking not only about a specialist, but also about a person who is able to show integrity and objectivity, despite the fact that, due to the coincidence of the sphere of creativity, his interests may come into conflict with the interests of the author. A variety of collisions are possible here, but one of them is very important - this is the reviewer's belonging to a different creative school, to different views than the author, with a high professional level both. The choice of a reviewer is a serious concern of the publisher. The reviewer, within the time limits set by the publisher and in accordance with the requirements of the publisher, set out in the memo to the reviewer or in a letter to him, sends a review containing a comprehensive analysis of the author's work, mainly concerning a special part of the text. Among the reviewers who constantly collaborate with the group of publishing houses "Book-maker" are authoritative scientists and specialists from the faculties of Moscow University and a number of academic institutions in Russia.

4. Literary editing (at the request of the author)

Editing (from French redaction, Latin redaktus - put in order) is a polysemantic concept, in our case - a part of the publishing process, the content of which is work on the manuscript of a work in order to improve it in literary, linguistic, professional, scientific, social relations. Types of editing used in the publishing process, literary, scientific and / or special, artistic, technical. However, the main one is literary. . First, the editor reads and analyzes the manuscript in order to assess and determine the possible perception of the work by the reader, the correspondence of the idea, title, subtitle to the content and genre of the work. Then the composition and structure of the text is analyzed and, if necessary, changed, dividing it into parts according to the hierarchy (chapters, paragraphs, general and particular elements). Work on the structure of the manuscript, its improvement is an extremely important stage of editing, which affects the perception of the book by the reader. The editor sets all compositional elements, determines the system of headings and subheadings, decides on the introduction of headers and footers, table of contents, in-text and out-of-text editorial notes and the content of these structure elements. After that, important work is carried out to match the style to the genre of the work, and then the scrupulous elimination of semantic, stylistic, grammatical and other errors and shortcomings. The editor takes part in the preparation of the draft design of the publication, the technical and artistic editors agree on the fundamental decisions with him. An important part of the work of editing a book is the creation (if necessary) of a reference apparatus, including a preface, afterword, book annotation, comments, notes, as well as various indexes - subject, alphabetical, index of names, titles (depending on the subject of the book - periodicals, cities, animals, coals, cars, plants, etc.) found in the text. The presence of indexes in the book testifies to the culture of the publication. The editor works in direct communication with the proofreader and the author, coordinating all types of edits at all stages and controls all changes in the text made by the author and employees of the publishing house and printing house, and, of course, with the technical editor, coordinating with him the most convenient and effective ways for perception presentation of structure elements in the text (selection of location, fonts, selection of each fragment).

5. Scientific or special editing (at the request of the author)

This stage is not obligatory, in some cases it may not occur, but often, when more thorough editing is required in terms of professional or scientific subtleties, the specifics of the text, it is carried out by specialists working in the publishing house or invited to perform this work. Special meaning in this process is the use in the text of scientific documentation, information publications, state standards and other normative documents. Important elements of scientific editing are editing tables, formulas, technical illustrations, diagrams, graphs, correct designation of physical quantities, symbols, etc. in accordance with international and domestic standards. In the scientific and special literature, the reference apparatus of the publication is of great importance. Scientific or special editing is done before or after literary editing, and sometimes in the middle of this process. This type of editing is done by a scientific editor.

6. Corrective work

Proofreading (from the Latin correktura - correction, improvement) is a stage in the production process of publishing books, newspapers, magazines and other printed materials, which eliminates various errors and shortcomings made during editing and typesetting. Proofreading is a very important publishing process designed to eliminate errors, typos, misprints and other shortcomings that reduce the perception of the text in the finished, published work. Work on proofreading the same work is carried out in several stages: first on the manuscript, then, after typing, on proofreading prints, and finally, before printing, in order to identify and, if possible, eliminate errors before the book is published. Correction work is carried out not only by the proofreader, but also by the author and other employees of the publishing house (editor, technical editor, art editor), as well as the printing house, where this is done by their own, typographical, proofreader. Accordingly, there are author's, publisher's and typographical proofreading. Corrective editing by the nature and methods of its execution is divided into editing-proofreading, during which technical errors are corrected by careful reading; editing-reconciliation for checking corrections in the laid-out sheets, produced by both through reading proof prints and line-by-line reading; proofreading performed by two proofreaders, one of which reads the text of the original aloud, and the other monitors the corrections and reports each of them to the second proofreader in order to eliminate gaps in the editing and inconsistencies with the original; a summary produced in the printing house in order to bring together all types of edits and control the correctness of lines, stripes, printed sheets in general, cripple.

7. EDITION design

After proofreading the manuscript (and often even earlier), work begins on the artistic design of the work. This is the most important element in the preparation of the publication. The reader's attitude to the book largely depends on how efficiently and professionally the artwork is done. The form of publication appearance, attractiveness, convenience and comfort of perception constituent parts and elements primarily contribute to the interest in the work, the content of which is still unknown to the reader. A professionally and aesthetically designed book makes you want to read it, it's hard to let go when browsing in a bookstore, you want to return to it more often if the content turned out to be interesting and useful. At this stage, the art editor, together with the author and the lead editor, resolve issues related to the placement, nature and number of illustrations, cover design, title page, flyleaf. If the publication is richly illustrated, the development of a design project is required. Very important in this case is the creation of a design style, the interconnectedness of its parts. In this project, on the basis of data on the type of publication, the genre of the published work, the readership, the volume, circulation and composition of illustrations, decisions are developed on the methods and forms of illustrations, printing forms, stitching and binding. The project includes the selection of materials for publication (paper, cardboard, fabrics, etc.).

The designer creates a design project and organizes its coordination with other specialists of the publishing house and printing house. He supervises the work of artists, photographers, graphic artists, retouchers, who perform one or another part of the design in accordance with their specialization, controls each type of these works, as well as printing processes related to printing. Produces editing of illustrations and performs some types of design work independently.

8. Technical editing

Simultaneously or in parallel with artistic editing, technical editing is carried out, the content of which is the choice of the publication format, font size and typefaces, the use of rulers and other text highlighting elements, the structure and placement of text and illustrations on each page. The choice of format depends on the type of publication, the functional purpose of the book. A collection of poems, a textbook, a scientific monograph, a souvenir edition, a geographical atlas or an album of reproductions from an art gallery, of course, should have a different format. Besides, important role when choosing a format, the technological capabilities of the printing house where the book will be printed, and the length of the line that is convenient for perception, play. The choice of font is also related to the purpose of the book, its relevance to its content, aesthetic and hygiene requirements. Along with the choice of typeface, depending on the genre and style of the work, the choice of size is important. For the comfort of reading, font sizes of at least 9 and no more than 14 are preferred, and the length of the line is 50-55 characters. The normal placement of characters and words in a line, normal (not too narrow, but not sparse) spaces between characters and between words also matter. It is important to choose the method of typing - with the alignment of lines, that is, respect for their graphic completeness, or to the detriment of the latter, the creation of equality between word spaces. It is possible to use hyphens at the end of lines, eliminating the disadvantages of both options. The commonly used one-column set in certain cases, for example, when publishing poems or when the format of the publication is too large, can be effectively replaced by two or multi-column.

The technical editor is engaged in the creation and placement of texts placed on the cover, flyleaf, dust jacket, title page, captions, headers and footers, table of contents. One of the main tasks of technical editing is the preparation of a set of draft design, and, if necessary, a layout of the publication. The technical editor prepares a technological specification for the printing company, which, together with a set of other documents and materials, is transferred to the printing house as a task for the publishing house to perform printing work.

9. Typesetting and layout

Work on the manuscript in the publishing house - editing of all kinds, proofreading, artistic and technical editing in total lead to the creation of an original layout prepared for transfer to the printing house.

The original layout made up in the publishing house by professional typesetters is transferred to the printing house both in printed form and in electronic form - on floppy disks or laser disks.

Also in our publishing house it is possible to display photo-transparencies on desktop publishing systems, which significantly increases the reliability in preparing a high-quality original layout. With this technology, the printing house only produces printing and subsequent production processes.

publishing products that are produced by publishing houses or organizations that sell (distribute) them. The main tasks of these products have an informative function;

label and packaging products, on which the competitiveness and purchasing power in market conditions;

business printing products that perform organizational functions, which are also called accidental blank products (reporting, forms, etc.);

A number of requirements are imposed on publishing products, the main of which are maximum information content and relatively low cost so that it can be purchased, as well as updating, and a significant shelf life.

Publishing houses and printing companies should work closely together, since both the quality of the released products and the creation of printed matter, which meets the highest, aesthetic and artistic requirements. This also applies to the literary, scientific, informational levels of materials that are published on the pages of publications, the form of their presentation, technical and artistic design. Publishing houses ensure the preparation, editing and design of publications, and printing companies must properly ensure the technical and aesthetic execution of the publication in a certain edition within the established time frame.

The artistic and technical design of the publication is the first stage in the creation of publishing products; the next step is its printing, which ultimately determines the face of the publication. The quality of the printing design of a publication is determined by a number of factors: the quality of the artist's execution of the originals of its design, the correct choice of printing equipment and technology, the quality of printing works.

The beauty of the publication lies not only in its illustrativeness. Using only printing design tools (fonts, ornaments, paper type), you can well design the publication. The category of the future reader should also be taken into account. The choice of printing method has an important influence on the quality of printing design of the publication.

The purpose of issuing both printed and electronic publications is to meet the needs for printed products as a means of information. The design of the modern edition has a purposeful character, which is manifested in the search for the best option delivering a text message to the reader. In the practice of designing publications, publishing houses strive to reveal the artistic image of the publication and its architectonics (construction), to ensure the convenience of reading the text, the use of the publication, the appropriateness of the choice of materials, technological processes. We should not forget an important principle - the cost-effectiveness of the publication, which is ensured by the correct choice of fonts, the format of the publication, as well as the fulfillment of technical conditions in the manufacture of printing forms.

Editorial and technical preparation of information and the development of a project for the printing design of the publication are carried out in the publishing house in accordance with industry and state standards. In case of deviations from the norms of these standards for the design of the publication, it is necessary to agree with the printing company that will issue it.

Probably none of the areas social activities does not cooperate simultaneously with so many diverse specialists from various fields of production and provision of services, as in the publishing and printing business. The author of the work, a literary or scientific editor, a graphic designer, a technical editor, printing production technologists, scientists who are working on the development of new technologies and materials prepare a printed edition for release. perfect content and high quality The execution of the edition depends on their level of skill as well as cooperation. Each of the above-mentioned specialists must have both comprehensive training in general education and applied disciplines in their specialty, and certain knowledge about the specifics of the work of other specialists involved in the birth of a printed publication. Among the above-mentioned specialists, a technical editor plays a significant role in the creation of printed materials, who designs the image of a future publication and translates it into a system symbols, layouts understandable to the workers of the printing house who implement this project. He monitors the printing performance of the publication at every stage. technological process, he must not only correctly assess the quality of the work, but clearly and competently express his comments and give instructions on correcting the identified errors.

2.1 Originals for printing publications

An original for printing publications is a text or graphic material that has undergone editorial and publishing processing and which is the basis for creating a printed publication by means of printing: recreating in sets, reproducing by photochemical or electronic means, replicating on a printing machine and transforming processes in the circulation of the finished publication.

The main requirements for copyright text and pictorial originals that are transferred by the author (a team of authors) to a publishing house (publishing organization) for publication in accordance with the concluded agreement, as well as for publishing text originals that are transferred by publishing houses (publishing organizations) by a printing company are regulated state standard.

The above standard does not apply to text originals for some types of publications that require special methods for making printing forms: unique, facsimile, experimental, musical (without text), cartographic. The standard also does not apply to originals for the manufacture of printed products (labels, stickers, white products, etc.), microcopies, photocopies.

There are three main types of original, author's, publisher's and original layout (reproduced original layout).

An author's original is an original prepared by the author (a team of authors) of a work, which includes all the necessary components (main, additional and auxiliary texts, original illustrations, captions, etc.) for transfer to a publishing house with subsequent publishing and editorial processing and release.

The publishing original is the author's original after its editorial and publishing processing, supplemented by the originals of the external design and marked up for printing; it has a publishing specification, which indicates the technical and technological parameters of the future edition. Summarizing, we can say: the publishing original is a complete draft of the publication, which serves as a guide for printing.

The original layout is the publisher's original, each page of which coincides with the page of the future edition. The original layout can be typewritten (printed on a conventional printing machine) or compiled on CIS, it is signed for printing and transferred to the printing house for layout and printing.

A reproduced layout original is an original prepared for the manufacture of a photoform or a printing plate by photomechanical means or by scanning, like an image. Now, in connection with the spread of computer typing and CIS, this type of original is widely used for printing operational one-color publications with a small circulation (author's abstracts, conference materials, postcards, etc.). When classifying originals, four main criteria are taken into account:

The grayscale or line original defines the nature of the signal that creates a binary (binary) image. (All text originals belong to dashed ones);

An opaque or transparent original determines the principles of signal formation and transmission when the image is perceived in reflected or transmitted light;

The black and white or color original determines the characteristics of the spectrum of the signal that creates the image;

An image or text original defines an image or logical (text) information.

The originals also differ in the way they were made: drawings, paintings, photographs, reflections.

Electronic images as originals for printing. AT recent times originals in the form of a bitmap image are widely used, both single-color and multi-color on prints, printouts or copies of copiers. With the introduction of CIS in the printing industry, electronic images created in computer systems (computer graphics), digital cameras recorded on CD-ROM, as well as images received via the Internet, have become widespread as originals.

Images on CD-ROM. The development of digital technology has made it possible for companies that offer image archives to produce their own electronic catalogs. The idea of a one-time high-quality scan with the next sale in digital form at a relatively low price turned out to be successful. There was a CD-ROM with digitized images.

digital photography. Period from 1991 to 1994 became a turning point. Printers and publishers have stopped shying away from desktop publishing (DTP). DTP technologies created new way preparation of the original for publication.

In 1997 -1999 the world of photography has undergone a similar transformation. With the rapid transformation of digital cameras from an expensive toy to a professional tool, the traditional role of the photographer has changed. He no longer has to wait for pictures from the darkroom. The photographer and the customer can see the picture on the monitor almost immediately after shooting.

Digital photography gives the photographer the opportunity to experiment. Previously, his work was completed when he saw that the pictures were clear, with good composition and correctly conveyed color. Now the photographer is responsible not only for the quality of the image, but also for the suitability of the electronic file for further use. Not only photographers are getting used to this, but also art editors, who change the usual criteria for evaluating the work of a photographer. And although other specialists are still engaged in color separation, photographers still have to get acquainted with the conversion features in the RGB and CMYK color models.

The author's original text is the text part of the work. prepared by the author (a team of authors) for transfer to a publishing house with subsequent publishing and editorial processing and release.
