Grigory Leps was accused of connections with the post-Soviet mafia and involvement in the Eurasian crime syndicate “Brotherly Circle”. And in April of this year, we published an interview with the leader of the “Brotherly Circle” Vadik Bely, or Vyacheslav Leontyev. Leps is now being blamed for meeting this particular person. And at the same time to Leontyev’s lawyer Vadim Lyalin. He also made it onto the notorious list along with the famous chansonnier. The funniest thing in this story is that a few hours after the scandal broke, Lyalin, as a former special forces soldier, received a delegation of American journalists! “MK” witnessed the embarrassment and at the same time found out how Leps, Lyalin and others got on the list of mafiosi.

Of course, no one expected such a scandal. Initially, it was assumed that the visit of American journalists, who are in Russia under an exchange program within the framework of the presidential Russian-American commission, to the Vityaz special forces base of the Ministry of Internal Affairs would take place in a decorous and noble manner. Actually, like any official visit. Among those who were invited to a meeting with newspapermen from the United States was Vadim Lyalin. He was assigned to meet visitors.

Why Lyalin, the reader will ask? After all, he is an ordinary lawyer. That’s how it is, but in the past, Vadim was an officer who served in the special forces of the Internal Troops of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and devoted his entire life to the international anti-terrorist fight. True, with all his rich life experience, Lyalin could not predict what kind of struggle - behind the scenes - would begin around his person on Wednesday morning.

The information bomb exploded when the journalists were actually on their way to the special forces. Nothing was changed in the visit program. So it turned out that Grigory Leps’s comrade in misfortune, included in the “black list of persons posing a threat to national and international security", appeared before reporters in full dress - in uniform, green beret, with medals. This is probably what real mafiosi should look like.

After the American reporters explored the base, fired machine guns, and looked at the best fighters “in action” (they showed what they were capable of), Lyalin delicately introduced himself:

And now I have another “title”. I'm on your government's list of the most dangerous criminals. I don’t advise you to take pictures with me, otherwise you might not be allowed back into your homeland. They will be accused of having connections with “terrible Russian crime.”

The reporters, of course, were taken aback. But then they bombarded me with questions. How is that possible? Our authorities couldn't be wrong, could they? So, what was it for?

Vadim himself has only one version.

At one time I acted as a lawyer for a famous authority nicknamed Bely (Vyacheslav Leontyev). And he was one of the first to be included in this “black list”. He defended Leontyev for free, as a neighbor - we once lived in the same house. By Russian laws, if the accused does not have money for a lawyer, he is provided for free. So now they will recognize all lawyers as criminals on an equal basis with those they defend? Hundreds of people were saved with my participation! My wife will give birth in Dubai, and I will fly there tomorrow, even knowing that I could be arrested. Because I don't feel guilty about anything.

By the way, Bely gave his first and only interview to MK. And there we printed a photo of Bely and Lyalin with the caption “authority and his lawyer.” Apparently, this was enough for the US Treasury.

Grigory Leps already called me,” Vadim told MK. “Let the Americans now dig up Bob Marley and accuse him of all mortal sins,” that’s what he said! And he believes that he was on the list because of his acquaintance with Leontyev. They really have known each other for twenty years, but so what? Leps likes to relax in Dubai, where Leontyev lives. It is clear that they often meet there at some parties. But does this mean that they have joint affairs, business? And Leontyev himself leads the life of a law-abiding citizen. In Russia, there are no more legal claims against him; he is no longer on the international wanted list. And in any case, it’s crazy to consider everyone who knows him to be criminals of the century! There are thousands of such people. So - everyone on this list? It turns out that you talked to me and you can get into it too.

To say that the journalists were shocked is to say nothing. Everyone tried to take a photo with Lyalin (apparently to place a photo in the family album with the caption “I and the enemy of the people”). Everyone also wondered why Russian officials did not react to the new list. Towards evening there was a reaction.

“Leps is truly Putin’s confidant, he is a beloved singer throughout the country, and, naturally, we expect that we will receive more from our American colleagues and partners.” detailed information, in connection with which such a decision was made,” presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov told reporters on October 31. By the way, as a confidant of the head of state, Grigory Leps was invited to the presidential inauguration ceremony in May 2012. Other “trusted” artists were also present there, for example, Stas Mikhailov and Nadezhda Babkina.

The representative of the head of state also noted that protecting the interests of Leps is as important as protecting any of the Russian citizens.

But the logic of the American authorities can be understood. Indeed, if Bely (in the sense of the house) has evidence against Bely (in the sense of the bandit), why not add his closest friends to the list of enemies of the United States? Probably Leps sang his songs to Leontyev for a reason, but conveyed something behind the scenes. Here in the States they don’t just plant people like that. Only with American journalists it turned out awkward. What if now they really won’t be allowed into their homeland?
